For the second straight evening the Yankees won a 12-4 laugher against the Rangers, although unlike Tuesday night it didn’t get that way until midway through the game. The Rangers actually held two leads in the early going, but the Yankees battled back, and were able to add seven more runs to the 5-4 lead they took into the fifth.
Ivan Nova was good enough, although once again wasn’t really fooling anyone, finishing the game with a 5 2/3 innings of four-run ball along with seven hits, three walks and only two strikeouts. Derek Holland was worse, getting touched up for six runs in five frames.
Digging out of early holes is always a huge morale booster, and the Yankees wasted no time erasing the Rangers’ early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Mark Teixeira two-run jack. Tex would later crush another two-run jack, from the left side, marking the 11th time in his career he hit home runs from both sides of the plate in one game.
The Yankees were the beneficiaries of offense from all sorts of unexpected places, including Eduardo Nunez, who launched a solo home run (and also collected a single and a walk) and also stole two bases (though he also got thrown out at both third base in an inning-ending play that was either a boneheaded baserunning gaffe or just a great play by center fielder Endy Chavez; and was out at home on a play that would’ve been aggravating had the Yankees not been up by five at that point); Ramiro Pena, who clubbed a solo home run(!); and Francisco Cervelli, who had a hit, a walk and an RBI.
Latest bullpen acquisition Cory Wade (resulting in Kevin Whelan‘s optioning back to Scranton) retired all three men he faced, while Jeff Marquez pitched a scoreless ninth. The back end of the bullpen sure is quite the revolving door these days, eh?
The Yankees look for the sweep this afternoon (it would be only their second three-game sweep of the season, which sounds crazy) behind the freshly-acquired Brian Gordon, who is making his first career Major League start. If there’s any justice in this world Gordon will hurl seven innings out of shutout ball against the Rangers. At least he better, because you know he would were he facing the Yankees.

That Cano homer was an absolute BOMB (and it landed four seats to my right). Pena’s was a nice poke, too.
As for Nova, most of what he was throwing in was getting hit back out pretty hard. Batters are definitely not fooled by what he’s bringing.
Mark Viera of NYT had a nice take on this game. He focused on what Nova called the play of the game, saved his bacon. Nova had just left with two outs in the 5th, up 5 – 4, with a man on second. (Grandy had just run down a long fly to left-center.) Torrealba was steaming home from second on a single up the middle that Grandy came in on. He fired a strike to home, and Cervelli executed a perfect spin, blocking the plate with his butt, as he swivelled to tag.
I loved a comment @ RiverAve, “Alas, poor Yorbit.” Sweet stuff!
The Yanks followed that with two homers in the 6th, including Tex’s second. From Viera:
“Big defensive plays can sometimes boost a team more than offense,” Teixeira said. “Offense happens. Guys hit home runs. But that’s a special play.”
No offense, Larry; I just loved this game, and Viera’s great points.

I’m certainly not offended in the least; and I’m glad you shared Viera’s take on the game with us here. There’s almost always going to be multiple aspects of a given game that I won’t get to in my recaps, and now I wish I had noted that Grandy-Cervelli play at the plate, considering how huge a game-changer it wound up being.
