Another Friday, another big breaking story in Yankeeland, although this one is not nearly as positive or exciting as Andy’s return last week.
Joba Chamberlain suffered a major ankle injury yesterday while playing with his son at a children’s play center. It’s being called an open dislocation of his right ankle. For those not in the medical field, an open dislocation is like a compound fracture where there is a break in skin at the area of the joint. Surgery was performed on the ankle last night and Joba is currently recovering in the hospital.
Needless to say, this is a very serious injury. No timetable for Joba’s return has been determined, nor has it been officially determined if the injury is career-threatening. Cash summed it up best by calling this a “massive” loss for the Yankees. More details on this story to follow as they become available.

I certainly wouldn’t call it a ‘massive loss’. I’m even sure I would classify it as a ‘significant loss’. The guy was a middle-reliever with upside. Dime a dozen in the Yankees’ system.
Cash’s words, not mine. And while I agree with you that it’s not a huge loss for 2012, the argument can be made that it’s more important for the future with Mo and Soriano’s roles opening up in the next few years.
Joba may be a middle reliever now, but he’s shown that he can be a dominant late-inning reliever as well.
It feels massive to me though. It’s Joba, and having him coming back was going to be a nice luxury for Girardi and his match up binder.
Also what what Joba doing with his son? Parkour at the play center?
Sounds like they were messing around on a trampoline. My guess is he got his foot caught between the bouncy part (technical term) and the frame and his momentum carried him over the side and dislocated the ankle.
Apparently he was at a kids play center, where they probably had a trampoline floor. I’ve been to a place like that, and there is no side to fall off or frame exposed. It’s more likely he landed funny on a pad which covers the beams or his ankle just buckled when he came down. Sounds like a freak accident, iwhich is a shame. Feel bad for the guy, especially since his kid had to witness it happen.
