Game Thread: Tigers at Yankees, Game 2 of the 2012 ALCS
No matter how the 2012 season ends for the New York Yankees, this will also stand out as the season when the newest crop of Yankee legends began to fade away, as all great athletes must eventually. This will be the season that saw Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter both fall to injury, something that was once unimaginable. With that out of the way, these guys have to score some runs! You can’t win a baseball game if you can’t score runs. Hopefully the Yankees know this. Hiroki Kuroda toes the rubber for the Bombers. The Tigers will counter with Anibal Sanchez. Enjoy!

Ro me there are two keys to this game. First, how will Oki-san be on short rest? Ans how will the pen respond if needed for more than two or thee innings this afternoon?
The second one is not as straight forward. Both the O’s and the Tigers have pitched the Yankee left handers differently than during the regular season, especially Cano & Tex. They are consistently pounding them on the outside portion of the plate. The Yankee batters are swinging at balls out of the zone and/or trying to pull them. They must let the ones that are wide go and the ones they swing at they must go with the pitch.
nice observation, Phil. didn’t see Cano’s pitch, but it looked like he rolled over one. Tex, on the 3-2 got one down the middle.
Another RISP fail!
Hiro has a nice two seamer, used into the right handers, and just finished off Young with an effective slider.
Oki-san has ignored the calendar years this season, now he’s ignoring the calendar days.
Sanchez is the type of pitcher that A-Rod could break out against.
sly fox bent in a back door sinker.
Finally Swish gets a break
Two out hits are nice, but the Yanks need to get more than one at a time.
timely. Boy, Hiro’s got the John Deere today.
Has anyone heard anything about Joba’s status?
nope
When Cano & Tex com up this inning, watch where Avila sets up. I’ll bet at least 80% of the time he wants the pitch away.
Robinson tried to go to left, but it was middle in, jammed him.
I noticed. I hope that’s a good sign for him.
but he may be discouraged, “ah, got to pull it next time.”
Nice try by Itchy, just didn’t get the bunt to go far enough.
Nice pre-positioning or range from Nix: bouncer in the hole, then one up the middle.
Maybe Girardi is channeling his inner Maddon.
Damn, some quick innings!
Time for my mouse to stop squeaking and go “rawr.”
Ibby got the r. Now they need the a, w and r.
Erase the r.
Now leadoff hits are timely by definition.
rawr
squeak went that inning
I swear that it looked like the more Ibby pumped his legs, the slower he ran.
never saw such hang time. Musta been 400′, straight up.
Our Japanese import is looking like a Lexus.
Lexus makes a lawn mower?
and what a humdinger.
Great play by Robinson.
I still can not understand how he throws that way and so accurately.
If I was Oki-san’s agent I write a clause in his next contract that requires the Yanks to score at least 4 runs in every game he starts. This lack of run support for his is incredible.
Has no one floated the idea of starting arod at short and chavez at third?
Joe dismissed it immediately: “been too long.”
Alex has put on considerable weight, and would have really restricted range.
Plus with all his hip problems, I doubt A-rod could cover much ground at SS.
wow, Nixy surprised me. Thought that was impossible.
He’s played a fine short.
If only he could hit like Nunie. Or Nunie could filed like him. There must be some doctor in Africa or Asia who’s willing to try the surgery.
Arod never would have gotten to that.
Top o’ the order! C’mon Yankees! Give us something to cheer for.
Give me an “R”
Ron, you idiot, Itchy does NOT like to take a walk!
Scamper away! “R–”
Give me an “A”
a
You were right smurfy, Cano rolled over trying to pull that outside pitch.
probably trying to hit behind the runner. Perfect pitch that Robinson could have lined to left.
Gimme a big “W”!
For wimps?
dribblers, dribblers, dribblers
Guess the Professor is too bummed to play today.
I’m surprised he’s not here.
Alright! Now for the DP!
Oh no, Cano!!!!!!!!!!!
Scheiss. And NO, Smoltz, I would NOT like to see Cabrera get a better lead to mess up the dp.
I was thinking that exact same thing when he said it.
They think with the Detroit hitters, fielders and pitchers. A-holes.
Come on Alex, give me an “R”
yeah, a big R!
Gee Craig Seagar, thanks, I never would have guessed a broken ankle trying to make a play was rare in baseball. Seems to happen every 40 or 50 years to me.
Now is the time for a 2 out hit!
Sanchez is pulling the string a lot.
awr
queak
First two games and the Yanks have failed to score a run off the Tiger starters. And they face the best two starters when they go to Detroit. Hmmmm…….maybe they can go against the conventional wisdom and rough up Verlander and Scherzer,
I can understand bang-bang plays where the ump is wrong, but that call was BAD!
Was that the same ump that had first last night?
I don’t know how they rotate in the playoffs.
I checked yesterdays box score, Rob Drake was at 1st last night.
thanks. Jeff Nelson’s just as bad.
dead man scoring
The Yanks should have been out of the inning, but neither Logan nor Joba made the pitches needed. They were having success against Miggy going inside, and then the last two ABs they suddenly go away on him.
no doubt, you’re right, and the players have to swallow it, and go on. But I am enjoying to chew on sour grapes.
A review of that play would have taken less time than a pitching change.
even less with an ump at a monitor, full time.
Why in God’s name was that ump so far from the base?
This game was moving along rather quickly until this half inning.
Finally it’s over.
time and runs, scheiss!
Well, the Yanks have 2 innings against the Tigers ‘pen to score 3 or more runs.
let’s have some hits off Coke.
This is getting ridiculous with those two strike calls!
Bottom line, the Yanks still haven’t scored.
They’re getting me mad. Hope the Yanks agree.
I’m in the mood for a walkoff!
Just hope I don’t have to wait until spring for it!
Yanks batting .189 so far in ALCS
R from Arod!
We got an “R”
Oh from Curtis! Phil Coke conquers. Plbbbt.
Remember Atlanta!!!
smurfy, chat at ya Tuesday.
Joe G. demands full instant replay umpiring! Yay!
Yanks .need to.score can’t win without crossing the plate. Yankees downhill ever since the league cut their steroids
