Game Thread | Game 123 | Yankees at Twins | Friday, August 19, 2011
As of the initial drafting of this game thread the lineup hadn’t been posted yet, but with Alex Rodriguez not yet activated and the Yankees facing the righthanded soft-tossing Kevin Slowey — making his first Major League start of the year — I’d expect it to look something like this:
Brett Gardner
Derek Jeter
Curtis Granderson
Mark Teixeira
Robinson Cano
Nick Swisher
Eric Chavez/Jorge Posada
Russell Martin
Eduardo Nunez
Taking the mound for the Yankees is Phil Hughes, who will look to continue on his recent string of strong outings. Despite some shaky turns here and there, Hughes has actually been pretty good since returning from the DL on July 6, putting up a 4.05 ERA as a starter — a number which actually falls all the way to 2.48 if you take out his 4.1-inning, 7-run disaster against the A’s on July 22.
Game starts at 8:10pm Eastern.
ETA, 3:40pm: The Yankees have claimed Aaron Laffey off waivers from the Mariners and will designate Gustavo Molina for assignment. RAB’s Mike Axisa just wrote about Laffey yesterday, so everything you need to know about him can be found here.

Looking for a strong outing by Phil Phranchise
3 straight 6-inning starts with 2 or fewer runs.
very strong, joe should pull him now and leave on a great outing
“The Yankees have claimed Aaron Laffey…”
More bullpen madness.
So now we have two LOOGY’s in case the guy who comes in to face one or two guys can’t go the next day? Really? I guess none of the right-handed relievers (excepting Rivera and Robertson) can get out lefties.
The only thing I’m sure we can expect from this move is more over managing by Coffee Joe. Sooner or later the roster will be composed of 17 pitchers (10 of which will be anonymous, completely fungible middle relievers – specialists for the 5th inning on odd-numbered Thursdays, cloudy-day specialists, etc all of whom will only be able to throw 5-10 pitches per appearance and then need a day off in between) and eight exhausted regular position players.
Give me Tidrow, Lyle and the Goose (AND the way thew were used) any day.
Mostly agree. I’d rather have a guy who was good than lefty.
I just looked up Sparky’s stats. For his career, he had basically no difference facing lefties or righties. In his Cy Young year, he was significantly better against righties.
Dang, Posdaa really hammered that one, a rope that would have hit the wall without Plouffe’s suspenseful snag.
‘Nother sweet play by Cano.
Wowsers on Cano’s liner.
I missed that last run. What happened?
Tex was on second, on a Bermuda triangle, center left pop that Torino did a belly slide for, too late, and Robbie’s liner smacked 12′ high on the right field fence.
Michael Kay was saying Phil was looking like he did first half last year. He’s delivering the ball well, has hit the corners several times, the ump has looked for rain and called a strike, and the cutter is moving several inches.
But there no snap, crackle or pop, as the gun hits 96, and the batter swings air.
Figure his recovery is coming along, and he’s practicing is art well, maybe better than Slowey, who has been beaten hard several times.
Hughes looks good. Not great, but good.
yeah, that’s what I meant.
Yeah, I’m just summarizing.
if I were less energetic – how’s that flu, recovery? – that’s exactly how I would say it.
That bunt attempt was awkward, and Brett again erred by being too fine, having it roll barely foul. That’s what’s happened on the last tree bunts, save one successful drag. Obsessive personality, maybe.
Slowey may suit him fine, but Derek hit that liner COMPLETELY dead center.
Did you se the Grandy liner? Came back!
Nifty slide! Quick.
That sac fly wasn’t that deep, and the throw was strong. If it had been accurate, Jeter would have been out.
The guy’s got an edge! Oh, yeah, he saw the catcher setting up inside, and took the straight, if obvious, course. Swwwiit, half-slide fo quickness. Looked quicker than running.
This dying smoker is really getting on my nerves.
I was thinking that the same guy set that up, as does the sound work at the Stadium.
Posada!
that was a pure hit, wasn’t it?
woah! Russell interrupted the compliment to Mr. Brosius’ defensive play. He really hammered it.
I really hope Martin has a good stretch drive and gets hot for the playoffs. He makes a huge difference when he’s hitting.
yeah, I love the balance of offense. (and the quantity)
joe needs to rest him more and stay fresh
Russell is clearly angry that Larry and I were discussing his lower-than-Cervelli OBP.
no. you got that wrong: his ba is lower, his obp is within a point. Hope that makes him extra mad.
Well, I think the same guy as did the wheezing expirer, did the WB Mason commercials. And he NEVER< NEVER< NEVER gets it right.
I think the smoker commercial is going to make more people give up watching YES than give up smoking.
hardy ha – YES!
I can still hear the sound of Russell’s bat.
Better tell YES to look at their Foley equipment.
They can dub in a hand grenade for the replay.
that’s funny, but once in a while, I think I’ve heard good bat sound on YS replays.
Grandy’s liner sounded hard as hell. Solid!
Swish’s hit will probably be recorded as a flyball, but it was a pretty well hit, hig liner. We have just been hitting solid two irons tonite.
I think Flash misnamed strike one as a not-your-best curve ball. I think it was a very nice slider.
hunh- that looked like a strke, not ball 4.
wel, how ’bout “7 strong innings!”
Do you get to stay up late on Friday nights?
I guess not. He gone.
That was interesting of Michael Kay, talking of Russell’s – and Flash’s – mindset after hitting two homeruns. Russll had a 8 or 9 pitch at bat, and after a foul shot, and two more pitches, he swung hard at strike three. He could feel it coming, maybe too much, as the pitcher delivered a good low curve.
Nice shallow coverage by Gardner, on Nishioka’s liner.
perfect line drive double by Teix, hit hard, as is usual tonight.
Well, more sour stories for the Twin City newspapers, and a nice one for te NY papers.
Mssr. Plouffe is a light note of cheer for the Twinkers.
Gotta compliment the doubleplay Robbie pulled off on Kubel, catching the low liner to his left, and back, then throwing to first swiftly and well, turning only the top of his torso.
