Via Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, we learn that the Yankees are currently unsure as to whether or not Nick Johnson, signed in the offseason to be the team’s DH, will return this season. This, of course, isn’t a surprise when you consider Johnson’s checkered health history. Heyman goes on to add that the Yankees will search for another hitter as a result, presumably one with on-base skills similar to the fragile Johnson. Echoing a recent Jayson Stark report, Heyman also names David DeJesus, a rumored trade target for several years now, as a possibility.

Why should the Yanks know more than anyone else? We all knew that Nick was a gamble, and it came up craps way too early. Fortunately his salary is low and he’s gone after this year (in all likelihood).

Next year, Posada is likely to be a… majority time DH. So a short rental is good enough for now. But I’d settle for some of the vitamins they’re putting in the Toronto water.

I don’t think a trade to replace Johnson would be wise, unless the price is extremely low. I have a feeling they’ll ride the three-catcher w/Jorge at DH train until it’s clear that Cervelli can’t be in the lineup every day. If/when that time comes, Moeller gets DFA’d, Posada starts to catch more, and Miranda is recalled to do the vs. RHP DH duties until he fails. Only when those options turn very far south should there be a trade.
