You know, I don’t know why, but I just don’t believe in the Rockies. They have a good team, though.

I approve of Moshe channeling his inner Buster Olney and picking the Rockies to beat the Yankees. Why? Because he picked the Cubs to beat the Yankees in the World Series last year.
So what does this all mean? It means – Colorado, hope you have fun playing enigmatic baseball from game 1 through to game 161 (game 162 won’t be played; rainout from a previous date that won’t be made up due to lack of playoff implications — Cubs only played 161 games last year). And for Moshe’s favorite team, my favorite team, and everyone reading this site’s favorite team? WORLD FREAKING CHAMPIONS AGAIN!
In all seriousness, I won’t cite records, but my picks:
AL: Yankees, Twins, Angels, Rays
NL: Phillies, Cardinals, Rockies, Braves
ALCS: Yankees over Rays in 7
NLCS: Phillies over Rockies in 6
World Series: Yankees over Phillies in 6
I picked the Yankees to miss the playoffs last year, so I’m not doing this through pinstriped glasses. Also, considering from a talent standpoint the Yankees probably improved this year, picking them to miss the playoffs would seem completely ludicrous.
For the Phillies, the Doc trade will be great. However, come playoff time, Cliff Lee was absolutely unhittable last year. It was a run even Doc will be hard-pressed to match. Even if he does, the key for Philly is which Cole Hamels shows up. 2008 Cole Hamels = Great chance at winning the WS for the Phillies. 2009 Cole Hamels = Not-so-great chance at winning the WS.
I also think their offense is just a bit overrated entering the season. Utley, Howard, and Werth are what they are. Ibanez, however, slipped significantly from the 1st half to 2nd half last year (OPS of 1.015 in the 1st half, .774 2nd half), and considering his age (37), I’ll lean towards the 2nd half being closer to who he is nowadays. He won’t OPS .899 again.
Ha! Honestly, I regretted that Cubs pick about 10 minutes after I submitted it. The Rockies pick, I like. I like their balance offensively and pitching-wise. Street’s injury worries me a bit, but otherwise, I think they are primed for a big run. I simply picked them to beat the Yankees because repeating is a very difficult thing to do. Talent-wise, the Yankees are the better team, but to win 6 small sample series in a row is tough.
Yeah, I definitely get the Rockies love. Ever since June of last year, I thought they were better than the Dodgers. And I understand the “picked against them based on probability” argument, although I myself am not a particularly big fan of it. The Yankees in the playoffs last year and the first two series of the playoffs, in this case, really shouldn’t have bearing on how they’d perform in the World Series.
But the Rockies and Phillies are definitely the best the NL has to offer, in my opinion, and would be worthy foes to the Yankees (or Red Sox) in the World Series.
Agreed, it probably isnt entirely logical if you view each series in a vacuum. I’m sticking to it anyhow. Hopefully Im wrong.
