Here are Pettitte’s numbers against the Phillies, via Baseball-Reference.

I think Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter will both have big nights against Cole Hamels.

It’s raining pretty hard right (I’m basing this on what I see on TV). Hopefully, we’ll have baseball tonight.

  1. Suppose to get the game in but not until after a rain delay.

  2. Alex with 2 terrible defensive plays tonight but he has a 2 run HR so I think we can forgive him, but he really needs to get it down because that is 3 plays he has messed up in the field in 3 games.
EDIT: That HR was hit 6th of the playoffs which ties Bernie Williams record for most by a Yankee in one postseason… Obviously a somewhat skewed record because guys like the Babe and Sweet Lou never got playoff bracket baseball but still.

  3. Andy is looking sharp for an old man, he had the rough first two innings and then after he gave up those 3 runs something clicked and he has been rolling ever since!

  4. I figured this would be a good game for Swisher and Rodriguez to get something going because this is the point in the Phillies rotation where they can’t overpower you and they don’t have great command or repertoire of pitches, it slows the game down for the hitter because he can focus on hitting one pitch per at bat.

  5. oldfan says:

With Andy’s pitch count and the rain, we are going to need some middle relief tonight.

I hope they can pass muster.

    • Andy should be able to finish 6 innings and then you can mix and match between Marte, Coke, Robertson, Hughes and Joba until you get to Mo… I truthfully wouldn’t be surprised to see all of them get work tonight and see Girardi just mix and match his way through the 7th and 8th.

Did anyone imagine that Pettitte would dominate the lefties in this line up like this? I figured Howard might give him some problems but he has been brilliant against all 3… Werth is another story entirely!

  6. With Rollins leading off the 7th I would go with Coke just to turn Rollins around the left side where he hit .020 points lower than he did from the left side, and then you get victorino who also switch hits but hits better from the right side so you might want to consider bringing Robertosn out of the pen but if you do you have Utley right behind Victorino so you would have to go to Damaso Marte to get Howard. With Werth hitting behind Howard and him hitting 2 HRs in this game you would bring in Hughes for the 8th and let Hughes pitch to Werth and Ibanez (who is a lefty but hits lefties better than righties) and you end the 8th with Feliz. Then in the 9th you can bring in Mariano for the 9th, this of course is a perfect world and only works if every pitcher gets his batters.

  7. Joba was warming up but I hope Joe isn’t going with Joba in this situation, I would rather go with Robertson here, You can’t let Chamberlain face the very top of the line up this game could be reversed real quick with his lack of any pitch!

    • Well he was throwing 93-94 with one 95 and one change up which was god awful and had no control to it at all… I don’t know how he got out of that inning but he did and I’m glad but still concerned. Why is Joba throwing 93 in the bullpen? The problems that he had in the rotation are still problems he is having in the pen which to me means that him in the rotation or pen isn’t the problem, it’s Joba. either he isn’t throwing as hard as he can to save his arm or his new delivery has completely changed what kind of pitcher he is, either way he needs to go back to what he was doing in 07-08 because he is slowly working himself into middle relief.

      • oldfan says:

I really don’t know what Joba’s problems were this year. Maybe, getting a full year in a set position, with no innings limit will help him.

Right now, I just want him to scorch the Phillies in this series.

        • To me it comes down to one of two things either he is protecting his arm and refusing to throw as hard as he can and he trying to nibble his way through games, or taking the “wildness and violence” out of his delivery has taken all of his explosion and burst away from his pitches and is effecting everything from fastball velocity to slider break and command… I was leaning towards protecting his arm all year but why do that in the world series? It doesn’t make sense, it makes me lean toward the delivery change Eiland instituted during spring training, ever since then his velocity went down from what it was as a starter before hand and it has taken away from his velocity as reliever as well. Joba is a fireballer and if he can’t be that anymore what is he? I say if it is the delivery go back to his old style and try to figure out away to keep the violence and still keep him healthy.

  8. oldfan says:

Joba did good. He looked real settled. Maybe the youngsters will come thru tonight. (with Marte pitching to Howard).

    • Joba got outs but he wasn’t great in getting them… He didn’t have great control, he only threw 1 pitch and his velocity is steadily dropping every time out and in fact this was the most I had seen 93 pop up on the gun since he has been in the pen. Just because he got the job done tonight doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a lot of problems even tonight!

    • I also find it pretty bad we have to compliment a player on “looking settled” while doing his job and doing it to the bare minimum! That should tell you how little anyone expects of Joba right now!

      • oldfan says:

        You’re right.

        • Now Marte looked good!

He strikes out Howard (for his hat trick) and the red hot Werth before getting Ibanez to line out for the 3rd out of the 8th! He seemed to really be into the game and he really pitched well, if he is going good like that is bodes well for the rest of the World Series and for next year!

A 4 run lead and Mo for the 9th (maybe Hughes with a 4+ run lead) hopefully should spell a win in game 3 and with the win the Yankees would steal home field back with the 2-1 game lead going into tomorrow with Sab’s on the mound for game 4.

          • Looks like Hughes will come in for the 9th inning, if he gives up a run I expect Rivera to be ready but what a plus it would be to not have to use Mariano in a win in game 3!

          • oldfan says:

You know, the last few outings for Marte, starting late in the Angels series was the best that i have ever seen him pitch for the Yankees.

I guess Girardi knows what he is doing.

  9. Godzilla with the pinch hit HR and he now has 2 HRs this world series! I am telling you that stretch of NL games this year in which Girardi got him a pinch hit in every game really improved his bat off the bench!

    • oldfan says:

I really can’t picture this team without Matsui, and Damon, too. I hope they keep the lineup basically together if they win.

Yeah!—-the 8th is over, if we can just beat the pouring rain in the bottom of the 9th. I don’t know how these pitchers can pitch effectively in a downpour. I respect their ability to do this.

      • I don’t! Just because you have a feeling for someone is not a reason to keep them around! I heard Damon has teams out there willing to give him 3 years and that’s fine I hope he takes it because his numbers are going to decline and quick in the next few years (not to mention he costs us runs because he is so terrible in LF) and Matsui’s knees are such a question mark if he asked for anything more than 1 year I wouldn’t even negotiate with him.

I wouldn’t mind both leaving to tell you the truth!

The Yankees need to get someone with an arm in LF and keep Matsui for the DH on a 1 year deal after that stay as far away from Damon as possible.

        • oldfan says:

History is not kind to front offices that broke up a WS winner. Tweaking yes. Losing key veteran guys who come thru in the clutch–We’ll see.

We can talk about this all winter–

The Yankees have the upper hand in this series now. (When Mo gets the last).

          • Getting rid of two guys isn’t breaking up squat! As you can see Matsui sat today and even with his HR we still win easily without him, Damon is less valuable and went through terrible power outages through out the year and all his HRs were completely based off the stadium!

They both can’t play DH and neither one can play LF because their defense ends up tacking away from their offense! The only way to get better is get rid of one of them and the weak link who will only decrease in abiltity next year is Damon, it’s sad but true he’s a good guy but he has no future with us!

CC, Andy, AJ, Jeter, Tex and Alex are the core of this team that’s who you don’t break up until you have to, Damon is a role player and we can fill that role easily!

  10. Something about Phil Hughes just spells disaster! The guy just gets scared away from the zone and tonight it looked like he just couldn’t hit the zone so he threw one middle and got it hammered!

    • oldfan says:

It is really perplexing about Hughes. Is it mechanical or emotional? Is he hurt? He was the best 8th inning guy in baseball the second half.

Oh well, we are still winning with him at one third power.

      Amazing Team!

      • It’s not perplexing it’s what Hughes has always been! A Head case! The guy has always been in his own head, these are the same problems he has a starter… He ends up doing two things that kill him every year, he overthrows the ball because he wants to throw harder and he gets scared away from the strike zone as soon as he starts giving up runs. It’s like as soon as runs score he gets some idea that he can nibble and he loses all faith in the fastball (or any pitch for that matter) in the zone.

More pressure than he has ever faced before and immediately in his own head and messing up, classic Hughes! His head is the reason I never liked the kid as a starter!

        • oldfan says:

          Agree.
But I thought that he might be over this when he went, what- 3 months, as a blow’em away reliever. I was at first surprised that he did so well(as a reliever). It seemed that he put all nibble/waste pitches thoughts away, and just went after guys.

Well, I guess that his troubles came back.
I hope that the kid matures.
He does have very good stuff at times (but then, so did many others.)
I’m sure that many teams would want him in a trade.
But, we still need him to get some outs in this series.Let’s hope that our bats roll up the numbers to make it easy.

          • Well once a head case always a head case just look at Burnett, he had to watch Cliff Lee give a post game interview in the World Series to go out and figure out that he needed to stop thinking and attack, sometimes it’s not stuff but all mental… Alex is a big example of that, guy has all the talent in the world but if his head isn’t right he can’t hit!

If one of those teams is the Mariners and Felix Hernandez is on the other side lets get a trading ahaha.

  11. Yankees win! Thhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhe Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaankeeees wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin!

Yankees take the Series lead 2 games to 1 and tomorrow we have our ace CC Sabathia on the hill against what should just be a target out there in Joe Blanton! If the Yankees win tomorrow we all but assure ourselves the WS win we all desperately want! We would also be the first team in 6 years to lose game 1 and come back to win the WS.

  12. Pettitte looked good even though it wasn’t technically a “quality start”, Joba got the job done but didn’t look great throwing low velocity with no Ks and no other pitches but a fastball, Hughes looked shaky again couldn’t throw strikes and gave up a HR and Mariano once again is making his case for the world series MVP! At this point if we win he is the one who is in line to get the award.

  13. oldfan: Keep our players out of that international baseball classic!Marte got injured there.

Well at least Dice K got “arm fatigue there haha

    • oldfan says:

Our “cousins” (the guys on the Red Sox blogs) have ranted about this (DiceK’s arm fatigue) all year long–all year long. lol

      • HAHA I imagine so… Bit didn’t Dice K blame it on America and not having arm reserves anymore or some BS?

        • oldfan says:

He did at first, but then he realized how upset everyone in Boston was with him, so he apologized and gave in to Mgmt’s US training routine demands. I felt that the front office was ready to trade him, or do something drastic, but he relented. He actually pitched good after he came back.

Another reason for us to get Halliday, King Felix, or such, this winter.

          • No way on Halladay! The guy is under contract for only 1 more year, he will be 33 year olds next year and on the back side of his career wanting a 5 or 6 year deal to take him to his 40s. I say no way to any trade for Halladay, the only starting pitcher I would trade for is Hernandez. I really don’t think we need a top of the rotation starter anyway, beating CC and AJ on back to back days is extremely hard, all we need is a solid number 4 starter to move Hughes and Joba back and make them compete for the 5th spot. My answer is look at somebody like Rich Harden or Ben Sheets both of whom could be gotten cheaply, I wouldn’t even mind a 1 year deal with Washburn if he is willing to come cheap (obviously this is on top of bringing back Andy).

  14. I love How John Kruk is trying to act like the Alex HR shouldn’t have counted… I understand the camera is slightly hanging over the fence but to me it clearly looked like the ball was going over the wall whether that camera was there or not!

    • oldfan says:

It’s amazing how downcast Kruk and the Fox announcers get whenever the Yankees get the lead, get a key hit, or win a game.
Definitely a anti-Yankee bias–not as bad as some ESPN guys though.

I wonder where Gammons is hiding as the Yankees take control?

It was a homerun–case closed–umpires discussed it before the game.

You are right about the trajectory, too.

      • Well Kruk was a Phanatic for a long time so he has an excuse, Joe Buck looks like you killed his dog every time the Yankees take a lead and he almost has to hold himself back from cheering for the Phils.

That’s weird that no one was told though huh? You could plan for that to happen in 1000 straight games and no one would hit that camera, the one game no one is told guarantee HR.

        • oldfan says:

The head umpire did an interview. I guess that it is standard procedure, for a ump crew going to a new park, to walk around the park and discuss things like that.

They are under no obligation to tell the managers, and they didn’t.

They knew, and they are THE MAN.

  15. I am really impressed with how the Yankee pitching staff has handled Chone Figgins in the last round and now Jimmy Rollins in this round! You have two very fast, game changing leadoff men with some different talent but both just as deadly to the opposition and just as important to their offenses! The Yankees essentially shut down Figgins and didn’t let him even get a hit until game 3 or 4 and in this series through 3 games Rollins is 2-9 and besides today hasn’t really shown up in the games to a great deal, the Yankees are completely shutting down the explosive leadoff men for their opponents and in turn this is shutting down the chances for guys like big Vlad, Morales, Hunter, Howard, Utley and Ibanez to get big hits with men on and change the game. Everyone wants to talk about how the pitchers are shutting down the 3-5 parts of the orders they have faced but to me the unspoken story is on how they have completely made leadoff men (very good ones too) automatic out 1.

  16. Also anyone questioning bringing in Mo in that situation is retarded… Hughes just gave up a HR and anyone who watches Hughes knows he only gets worse with location when someone takes him deep (he scares out of the zone) and the last thing we needed was for him to walk someone and get some guys on base and let the Phillies think they can win that game. The HR takes the lead down to 3 with 2 outs left, you go to the shut down closer and end this game to steal back homefield advantage and pit the ball in the Yankees court! Technically we only needed one game in Philly and now we have that win and still have 2 games in their home town yet to play with our ace going tomorrow.
