Award week is over, and things are about to heating up in free agency over the next couple of weeks.
- Melky Cabrera agreed to a 2 year $16 million deal with the Blue Jays. I had little hope that the Yankees would take a risk with him, but he was still a good match for the team. Now he’s playing against them, and the Blue Jays are looking more and more deadly. Their payroll isn’t getting any smaller at this point.
- Earlier, I wrote about how the MVP award is largely influenced by the voter’s audience. Beyond the Boxscore had their own debate about how advanced statistics should best be presented, and further pushed into broader audiences.
- It’s About The Money Stupid wraps up the Arizona Fall League numbers. There’s the good, there’s the bad, and then there’s Slade Heathcott who was unworldly. There’s a chance he wins the league’s MVP award.
- According to FanGraphs, former Yankee Austin Jackson was snubbed yesterday. He had a breakout season, with 5.5 fWAR, and didn’t receive a single MVP vote.

I got the feeling from his comments Cashman expects a regression from Melky back to the Yankee or Braves days, maybe he thought being back in New York would spur that on even more. I however believe Melky always showed 15-18 HR power, back to his days of 8 HRs before and after the break in different seasons for us. I would have pushed for a 1 year 10 million dollar deal, if he underperforms it doesn’t effect the 2014 budget, and if he comes up big you got a deal by not inking him long term.
I love what the Jays are doing in the short term, they may pay some on the back end but if Johnson is healthy and Romero bounces back I’d be very scared of that team.

I don’t think he’s a .300 hitter necessarily but I think it would be foolish to think his ability to slug over .400 with a .270/.280 BA is a fluke. He’s been in better shape the past two years than he ever was as a Yankee, and in his last season with this club he was able to slug over .400 and hit 13 HRs. I think it would be reasonable to for him to be a 3/3.5 WAR player depending on how effective he can be with the glove in either left or right field (likely left in Toronto). Certainly it isn’t unheard of for a player to be better in his year 26, 27, 28 seasons than in his age 20-25 seasons.
