Something very strange happened to me the other day. I was asked a question about the Yankees and I couldn’t answer it. It wasn’t as if I drew a blank and didn’t know the answer, I just couldn’t answer it with any certainty because I felt like I didn’t even care.
The person had asked me who I thought should play in the outfield in 2013. We had been discussing Nick Swisher‘s, Ichiro Suzuki‘s and Torii Hunter‘s roles or in this case, possible roles on the team, as it were.
I spend all day on the Internet, reading blog posts by different people on different sites – some of them are newspaper blogs, some are on blog networks and I keep abreast of transactions and news on Twitter which if I’m going to be honest right now, is one of the best places to do that sort of thing so it’s not like I don’t know what’s going on in the world of Major League Baseball.
We here at TYA also have almost daily email threads where the guys on this site brainstorm about everything from Yankee prospects to who will be in the starting lineup in 2013.
I read every single one of them.
So what gives? Why don’t I care?
I watch games during the season, I read about baseball daily – during the season and during the offseason – and I still can’t come up with an answer to simple questions about my team.
I think the answer is that I have the offseason blues. It’s that funk some people suffer from in the weeks leading up the Winter Meetings.
The baseball season itself is so long and arduous that sometimes some of us unlucky souls become burnt out and find it hard to think about, discuss and worst of all, write about baseball.
And there are a lot of things that could happen in the coming days and weeks. Other teams are beginning to sign free agents. Some of those free agents could be signed by the Yankees who have a lot of decisions to make for 2013 and beyond.
Maybe I’m just one of those baseball bloggers who is better at writing about things that have happened as opposed to what’s going to happen. Or maybe it will take some actual news about the Yankees to get me out of this November swoon.
In any case, don’t ask me anything else until after the Winter Meetings, until then, I think I may hibernate.

Oh, yeah. I won’t really start feeling baseball for a while, until something particularly interesting happens.
But it’s different than it used to be. Baseball news used to more or less shut down over the winter. Occasionally someone would write a few transaction notes in the newspaper, but it’s much easier now to be plugged in. You can read baseball every day if you want. Of course, some days you won’t want.
Well if this Blue Jays trade happens I’ll have blues of a different kind. Seriously how tough can one division get? Reyes, Josh Johnson, Buehrle, John Buck, and Bonifacio?
