Tonight’s game, when it finally began after yet another rain delay, started off well with the Yankees scoring first.
How did they do it? Let me walk you through it.
Derek Jeter led off the game with a single, Ichiro followed that up by reaching on a fielding error by Mark Reynolds. Poor Alex Rodriguez finally hits the ball hard and winds up being victimized by the defense being in the right place at the right time as Robert Andino was able to turn a 4-6 double play.
With two outs and Ichiro still on first, Robinson Cano hit a double to right field and this happened:
As we were all screaming, “Why did they send him!?!” Ichiro eluded Matt Wieters twice and scored. And miracle of all miracle, home plate ump Angel Hernandez actually got the call right.
The Yankees were up 1-0 until the bottom of the third when Andy Pettitte ran into some trouble. He got Jim Thome and Manny Machado to fly out and strike out to start the inning and then the wheels came off, well, okay, they loosened just a bit.
Robert Andino and Nate McClouth hit back-to-back singles which were followed by a J.J. Hardy walk to load the bases.
Chris Davis stepped in and hit a single on a 1-0 pitch, both Andino and McClouth scored to put the Orioles up 2-1.
After a mound visit from Larry Rothschild, Pettitte surrendered a single by Adam Jones and then was able to end the inning by inducing a pop out by Wieters.
The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Wieters led off with a double that was followed by a Mark Reynolds single.
The Yankees answered with a run of their own in the top of the seventh when Eduardo Nunez led off with a double which was followed by a single by Jeter. Both hits were off Chin and he was removed from the game and replaced by reliever Darren O’Day.
That was all the Yankees could do. The Orioles bullpen held them scoreless including closer and last night’s “goat” Jim Johnson who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure the win for the Orioles.
Pettitte ended his night with seven full innings of work. He gave up three runs on seven hits, gave up one walk and struck out five. It wasn’t a terrible outing for Andy and he probably could have earned a win if the offense hadn’t left a small village on base tonight.
Speaking of the offense, Russell Martin and Nick Swisher were the only starters without a hit. Yes, even A-Rod had a hit though it doesn’t matter because he ended the game with a strikeout.
The Orioles, once again, won a one-run game. I guess the magic is back. Or something.
Now, the series is now split heading back to New York and with an off-day tomorrow, the Yankees and their fans have over 40 hours to stew over this loss.

Everyone knows you cannot win every game. But when a team is infamous for losing 1 run games in which they had bases loaded w one out and failed…..and then gets into the playoffs and loses a 1 run game after failing w bases loaded and 1 out…..you need to investigate, problem solve, and correct attitude. The Yankees should hire me to hold a gun to Swishers head and tell him I’ll fire unless he cuts down on his swing w 2 strikes. And yet, my guess would be that the field would be covered w Swish guts, because he simply will not change.
Suzuki was way out of the base path and should have been called out.
