ALDS Game 5: Win Or Go Home
Perhaps you’re saying it shouldn’t have come down to this, not the way our pitchers have thrown the ball. But when you really think about it, with all the injuries and slumps this team suffered, we’re playing with house money.
Blame the hitters if you’d like, but the Orioles have pitched their way to game 5. It wasn’t on the backs of great names, but it was through a particularly strong game plan that has worked for them all season long. You see the Yankees make their living on their left handed hitters pulling the ball to right field, so what happens when you force them to hit the ball to the opposite field? Well the Orioles pitchers have kept their fastballs on the outside corners, and thrown quality slow stuff down in the zone, and the best offense in baseball hasn’t been able to do anything with it.
Our hopes lie in the Yankees finding a break in the chain of great starts with Jason Hammel this afternoon. Fortunately, they have CC Sabathia backing them up, which will hopefully give them enough time to find some mistake pitches. I take that back, it’s not hopeful any longer, it’s necessary, because today is a must win game.
Derek Jeter SS
Ichiro Suzuki LF
Robinson Cano 2B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Raul Ibanez DH
Nick Swisher RF
Curtis Granderson CF
Russell Martin C
Eric Chavez 3B
Yup, you read that right, there’s no Alex Rodriguez in this lineup. We’ll see if thats a good thing against the tough righty Hammel.
Nate McLouth LF
J.J. Hardy SS
Adam Jones CF
Chris Davis RF
Matt Wieters C
Manny Machado 3B
Mark Reynolds 1B
Lew Ford DH
Robert Andino 2B
On the mound, for perhaps the final game of the year, we again have CC Sabathia versus Jason Hammel.
The game starts at 5:00 PM EST on TBS. GO YANKEES!

BLEEP!
BLEEP BLEEP BLEEPITY BLEEP BLEEP BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
The Yankees broke Longnose
I found an omen that indicates Swisher will have 2 big hits today. Returning from a walk with Katie I found in my yard a wrapper from a Swisher 2 pack!
We NEED an early lead
Hammel is righty…
Yikes that fastball was 89 mph not cool
Frequently the first few FBs are a little lite.
I like this lineup… another good alternative would have been start A-Rod at 3rd, put Ibanez in the outfield instead of Grandy/Swish, and DH Chavez…
.216/.280/.333
Cmon Robby!
I know that it’s not easy to hit big league pitching. But all 3 of them in that inning were swinging at pitches they normally let go. And that foul by Cano was the swing that hit a pitch with any force.
If the Yanks don’t score in the 2nd inning, I do believe it’ll be a long afternoon.
Who is Ripkin kidding that you don’t hit an HR trying to hit an HR? Of course that frequently happens. Does anyone think Adam Dunn isn’t swinging for the fences most of the time?
I remember a quote from Sandy Alomar (Sr) way back when. He hit a home run to win a game, one of 13 he hit in his career. Someone asked him if he was trying to hit one. And he said (paraphrased), “Every home run I hit I was trying to hit. Of course, there were a lot of times I tried to hit one and didn’t.”
You’ve recovered! Congratulations!
A small fit of coherence.
Phil u know that asking them to score in this inning is asking for to much
I wasn’t asking them to score. I was more saying that if the 2nd inning batters looked like the 1st inning ones I believe that’s how they are going to be for the full game.
That’s not eye black on Swish. It’s war paint!
And he swung like he was using a tomahawk rather than a bat.
Atleast cc looks good
Granderson is starting to make contact. Now it’s just a question whether he can do something with in this game.
Balt 0 0 0
Yanks 0 0 0
Who blinks first?
BLEEP!
I wish that was the noise Orioles make when getting crushed!
Where are all the guys that were worried about pitching? Good thing we don’t have to worry about hitting.
I always worry about the pitching, the hitting, and the fielding. A guess I just love to worry. In fact, sometimes I worry about worrying.
I’m so worried about the baggage-retrieval system they’ve got at Heathrow.
WOW
I know. They look like a herd of deer in the headlights.
.036
You seem to be at a loss for words. Are you as stunned as the Yankee hitters?
I don’t know if that’s even measurable.
Did you hear what the announcer just said? Yankees are 1-28 in the last 9 innings……..must be the shoes.
That was the Professor’s .036
That cud b the game on first now
I hate, HATE I tell you, when a Yankee pitcher walks the lead off hitter.
Here you go Professor:

I’m not a big MP fan, but I always liked that album.
I had no idea what that was, I just Binged and it was the first item that came up.
A Monty Python song, from their Contractual Obligation album.
Did I just see what I saw?
Tex is my hero….a RISP….uh-oh
!
Bunt!
Holy Christ! It’s armageddon!
RA-oul, RA-oul
I can die peacefully now, I’ve seen it all.
A single that scored a runner from second! Abner Doubleday couldn’t have imagined that in his wildest dreams.*
*This is not an endorsement of the Doubleday theory, which is a crock of crap.
I was thinking that the shift wasn’t a full shift. It closed the hole between first and second, but opened it up around second base.
Are you saying they’re full of shift?
No, I’m leaving that to you.
Nifty! Tex clandestinely runs like hell and steals (ha, ha – the calf’s not too bad.), and Raul helps him scamper home.
And, just as quickly back to being the Yankees.
Thanks Swish.
Hey, Phil, you sure that omen wasn’t for a DP?
Well, it was an EMPTY package.
3 hits, 2 SBs, and one run. What’s wrong with that picture?
I WANT them, and I want them NOW!
Sorry to spoil your unhappy fizzy party, but Curtis just remembered how to hit and steal.
Anyone hear the ESPN discussion on Werth’s walkoff at bat? Werth did everything that the Yankees refuse to due at the plate. They called it, what Werth was doing, in “protect mode”….The yankees need to hire a hitting coach that knows what “protect mode” is…and is qualified to teach it….and anyone who refuses…get rid of them.
They can skip the teaching and refusing parts. Most of the lineup is to old to change now. They will have to turn over some of the roster.
I have no problem w that
I stopped breathing.
C’mon Schmoltzie and Ripper- go down there and tell those umps: it was fair!
Nicked the pole? Schmucks.
All right, that last replay, maybe it did.
They should check the ball for a yellow spot.
Did not nick it….from that angle, the ball was going left to right, so it looked like it deflected right. Now if the ball was seen to veer right from the other angle, i could say it hit it. That blimp angle shows it better, foul ball.
Certainly no way you could call it fair from the videos.
It was a fair call to call it foul. After all it was Oriole who hit it.
gee – and the TV guys had all those angles. Guess they maybe were just wishing hard.
Damn, I wish the Yanks had a big lead so I could enjoy CC’s pitching. I can only breathe in between pitches.
Loved the pitch inside and high to McClouth, just after his bunt-show. Anticipated a dive in beautifully, and shook him. (but maybe motivated the loud foul.)
If George was still in his hay day I bet the Yanks would be working on their 3rd manager in this series.
Itchy, Itchy
Both Yankee runs scored by their cripples!
Ichi scratches the wall!
Hammel’s done.
They’re still on the stupid foul ball.
Just think, if it was McCarver he’d probably be talking about foul poles from when he was playing and how different they are now, etc, etc
Shudder.
Pinch hit Rodriguez.
There was too much action to just get away w one run.
Announcer said that CC made Jones look bad…I think Jones made Jones look bad. Lock down inning for CC….he pitched complete game today.
He’s only at 82 pitches. At that rate, he could go 9 easily.
Yanks shouldn’t count on winning this game 2-0. They need runs.
I’m omenless.
FINALLY!!!!
Wahooooo! Curtis, you’ve warmed up to it, now keep ‘em coming.
Granderson coming out of it! He’s my pick for ALCS MVP.
You’re counting your Orioles before they hatch.
Love to see all the boys get in the swingin’ mood.
DANGER! DANGER! DANGER!
A shortstop with range…
Could definitely use a free range SS
HUUUUUUGE problem now!
OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
I refuse to panic.
I’m so far past panic, I’ve lapped it!
Why is CC still in…he is self destructing. Are we thinking of new, creative ways to lose?
ok…..2 outs
I should have bid on the bubble gum concession in the Oriole dugout.
Hardy is the O’s best clutch hitter
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hardy Har Har.
I should have know. CC comes before JJ in the alphabetalphabet.
Oxygen! I need oxygen.
O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2 O2
And then Ks him!
Not excited over the clutch pitching. Disappointed over the crappy ground ball.
You of long proboscis.
I meant the announcers. They’re rooting for the Orioles.
flagrant
Ah, what he lacks in range, he makes up, some, in smoothness.
I had confidence in CC, he has too much will to fall apart. He pitched McC and Hardy nice.
Hey, overall you gotta be happy with the Captain. But it would be nice to watch a great-fielding SS day in and day out. Maybe sometime in the future.
yeah, I was thinking dp on that one.
but it’s gonna be like replacing Mo: everyone has flaws, and fans have little tolerance.
Damn, no Geico runs.
Three righties. Soriano?
guess he yearns for a complete game
CC until someone gets on.
No, Sori.
No, CC
No, D-Rob
No, CC
No, Sori
Damn, I have no idea.
Looks like you were right in the first place.
you got the idea
Oops. Davis bats left.
Swisher is just loving this.
Wow. Terrible swing.
Wheweee Wheeeew! Beauty, CC! Si! Si!
Right after the last out I was ejected and got the Database Error message a few times.
me, three, seems to run in waves.
I hate the wave!
Bring on the Tigers!
Bye, bye Blackbird!
Anyone know what time the game is tomorrow?
I looked it up, 8 pm EDT
8 o’clock.
Ibanez, wearing goggles: it’s Aquaman!
Going for diner. Chat y’all tomorrow!
See youse tomorrow.
