Rambling About Andy Pettitte

As I sit here watching the wind whip around and the skies turn into a threatening color of dark gray, I think about Andy Pettitte. Pettitte had been out for nearly three months following an ankle fracture at the hands of a Casey Kotchman line drive back in June. But if the weather people are correct and Mother Nature has her way, Pettitte’s long-awaited return to the rotation will be delayed at least for a day.

If the stormy weather stays away, Pettitte could be making his 10th start of the year. So far, he’s 3-3 with a 3.22 ERA and a 1.091 WHIP in 2012 but this will be his first start against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Hiroki Kuroda and Phil Hughes have been the Yankees’s most reliable starters in September. CC Sabathia on the other hand, has not. Pettitte’s return, coupled with Ivan Nova‘s, so far, successful return, could make the Yankee’s final push into the playoffs as easy as possible.

I warned you in the title that I’d be rambling so here it goes…

I really want to see Pettitte come back and pitch like he was the last time I saw him throw the ball, the day he was injured. Yes, he gave up two runs – one unearned – but he had struck out seven and walked one in four innings.

He was pitching great. He looked like he was really getting back into baseball. He wasn’t the novelty that he seemed to be when he first came back. Remember all of the jokes from other teams’ fans?

People were finally accepting that Pettitte had made a legitimate return and that he was a strong addition to the Yankees’s rotation. Everyone felt like he was going to be a big help during the dog days of summer. Thanks to his injury that wasn’t meant to be.

But now, Pettitte gets the chance to come back and help drive the Yankees into the playoffs and I, for one, cannot wait.
