Game Thread: Sunday September 2nd, 2012 Orioles at Yankees
The Yankees won by default yesterday after the Orioles imploded in the late innings. It wasn’t the most fun way to watch the team win, but under the circumstances I’ll take it. The Yankees have been giving up ground in the AL East for the past six weeks. Anything that keeps them above water is an acceptable outcome, no matter how ugly. Today’s game is critical. The winner picks up a game in the standings. The Yankees have just announced that the injury bug has spread to Curtis Granderson, who will miss the game with a tweaked hamstring. Add him to the list of walking wounded. Chris Tillman toes the rubber for the Orioles, while the Yankees will counter with Phil Hughes. Enjoy.

Looking at the lineup Girardi has pieced together me thinks that Hughes better not make many mistakes this afternoon.
Hopefully he can put together a strong outing. Lets not make the same mistake twice. I will not be giving any endorsements to Hughes before he starts throwing
Talk about a must win game!
Nunez is on the team but not playing at SS. Shows you the faith they have in him going forward
A ten pitch 1,2,3 inning. Good start. But the ump has a wide strike zone!
That inning for Hughes was PDQ.
You know what would be nice right now? Several 1st inning runs.
Wide strike zone not helping Tillman thus far
Even though the Yanks didn’t score, this is a shut down inning for Hughes. There’s no way you can realistically expect this lineup to score many runs. Just not much there after the 1st 3 hitters. Got 1/3 of a lineup!
Nice play Swish!
And the Yankee fans in the section didn’t interfere, nice.
Looky here! That’s Nick Tex-Swisher!
If the 1st 1.2 innings are any sign, Hughes will have a great day.
(Crosses fingers) Me hopes you speaketh not too early!
Bite your tongue!!!
Ouch!
I LOVE being wrong!
Well, not all the time. But in this case!
Dickerson has been absolutely mashing down in AAA. Good to see him get a chance to play.
Dickerson with a laser home run. And now a 2-bagger for New York Nix.
The Hoagies are showing up the big boys!
Shut down inning Philsie, shut down inning!
Blue Jays are no help to us, down 6-0 to Tampa. Dammit.
They never were any good in the heat!
Boy, that feels good, to snag a hard liner in the webbing. Sure it was a major relief to Phil, too, but maybe it didn’t feel good, exactly.
10, 14, 15, Hughes pitch count has been going up every inning. Now stop that, just stop that.
Dickerson can play mann
Is that Thomas Mann?
Gotta love them snow cones on a hot day. I want more!
20 pitches that inning. Not liking that trend, especially since he’s throwing strikes.
Loved the speed of Dickerson’s gallop. His eyeballs were probably rocking, the ball bouncing in air, glad it all turned out ok. 2 run homer, followed by a run-and-a-half catch. Yeah, he’s doing good.
Curtis who?
Horrid cheer from the stands: “Rah, rah, ooool.” Meant to encourage Raul, but sounds weird.
2 strike HR, 2 strike hit, and finally a 2 strike out.
Arite Hughes shut em down. Offense needs to wake up too. I have a sneaking suspicion that 2 runs isnt going to get it done today
Phil striking out some batters with the slider/cutter. He’s throwing fb too, but I haven’t noticed the change-up. (Hate to quick-glance to catch the mph, like to appreciate the pitch.) Or either curve.
28 pitches that inning. He needs a really quick 6th to get deep into the 7th. I’d love a formula game. Starter goes 7, then Robertson and Sori shut the O’s down.
unless he adjusts his repertoire or something, he’s stretching it. They’ve been hitting it pretty hard.
Top of the 6th scares me too.
Nicky, nick, nick nick! Timely bingle!
And that will score C-Dick, Yankees get the run back, 3-1.
Sounds like BB porn!
Who says the Yanks can’t play small ball!
Last few innings the ump has narrowed his strike zone!
Ugh! Hughes has lost it.
Damn noooooo Hughes suxxx
How in God’s name could Girardi have let Hughes pitch to Reynolds? STUPID!
Wow that happened quick
Fungoo. 1 run in 5 woulda feel much better, than 5 in 5. Funguballasterios.
Pardon my Francais, but..
FUCK.
I don’t usually get alarmist, but that folks is the season.
Not enough offense, CC is not CC this year, Nova has been terrible, Hughes has pitched too many innings, and the ‘pen (other than Robertson & Sori) is suspect.
sure, and such flaws could mean the ship will swamp. But that would be no fun, no fun atall. I prefer to believe that we will overcome.
DP!
Girardi either just can’t recognize when Phil Hughes has lost it, or he just thinks that by willfully ignoring it, it will go away.
Agreed. Hughes started going down hill in the 4th, Pen should have been ready and Hughes not allowed to face Reynolds.
By the way, did you enjoy the game yesterday? I know I told you the night before that they’d win, but I thought the games was lost before that 7th inning.
Up until the 7th inning it was incredibly frustrating, made worse by there being at least a dozen jersey-sporting Orioles fans in my section. By that at bat by Jeter made up for it. It was one of the most exciting moments at a baseball game I’ve ever experienced, and it was so much better being there.
And you didn’t have to listen to Kay.
That’s always a plus.
yeah, bravery under fire, that was. And Swish’s funky curving liner. Were you still in the outfield?
I was in the front of the upper deck, hanging over the short porch.
They announced the attendance as over 46,000, but no way was there anywhere near that in the stadium.
a lot of fans had packed it in before that rally. Suckers!
It wasn’t full for any inning. If there really were 46,000 tickets sold, then either scalpers are buying thousands of tickets they can’t resell, thousands of season tickets are sold but the people don’t go to all the games, or all of New York decided to skip the game and go fishing.
That DP by Balt shows how they are inspired to play. The Yanks need to start doing that!
ah, blame Robbie for making them look too easy.
They do resemble that remark.
2 out of three fielders were on their bellies when the dust settled.
The LFer must be standing because I think that’s where that comment came from.
Come on now, let’s see some Joba Rules!
It remains a strange, strange Yankee season.
It’s a long strange trip it’s been!
They were mediocre for 42 games, absolutely fabulous for 43 games, then mediocre for 44 games.
Definitely time to get fabulous again.
as Fred Flintstone says, ” Joba, Joba do-o-o-o!”
(and, Dickerson, too!)
Tip a canoe and Tyler too!
Oh my!! Nice catch.
Ichiro is playing too much.
surprise pop hard rain here, 25 miles west of the stadium. Only lasted 20 minutes. oops, started again.
yeah, drop shot, Ichi!
I was in the middle of typing a comment calling him Why-Can’t-You-Ever-Get-On-Base-You-Son-Of-A-Bichiro when he got that single.
heck with you, Ichi, for spoiling the Professor’s fun.
Itchy was confused, thought he was at the US Open.
Geez, Showalter knows how to use a long man.
I guess Girardi has thrown out the binder. In 57 ABs Jones was hitting .211 vs. Wolf.
How about a damn hit with a RISP, you bloody pretenders?!
nah, want to let the tension build, the secret to really great drama.
Counting today, last 12 games Yanks batting .178 w/RISP
Had you clutch at bat for the season yesterday, huh, Jeter, you loser??
Blasphemy! haha
Ibanez, Itchy, & Jones in OF. Is that the oldest ever in MLB history?
they should have a fourth outfielder
Or at least allow them to use motorized wheel chairs.
Mayb when we miss the playoffs the front office will finally deciede after all these injuries tht it’s time to get younger this team sometimes gives u the impression tht they jst don’t care
Don’t really know what they can do for the next few years, with so many big contracts on the books and the $189 million cap looming.
Oh good. This should save the Yanks, a relief pitcher who couldn’t stay with the Red Sucks.
Now Lowe. Damn but the Yanks bring out some fearsome guys from the ‘pen.
they going for a truly miraculous comeback.
No patron saint for comebacks. I guess we’ll have to settle for Saint Jude Thaddeous, the patron saint of lost causes.
After that 4 inning save, Lowe has reverted to bumhood.
Put a fork in my beloved Yankees….they’re done.
Well folks, I’m making home made pizza for dinner so I’m going to start the dough. Chat y’all tomorrow when the Yanks play the Lung Disease! I bet they cough up some games.
