Game 145-Nova Nueva
Ivan Nova makes his first start after a brief DL stint for a sore shoulder, and Yankee fans can only hope he’s a improved pitcher from the guy who went on the DL. Facing Nova will be James Shields, who has had mixed results facing the Yanks in recent years.
Here’s your lineup, courtesy of LoHud:
1. Ichiro LF
2. Jeter DH
3. Cano 2B
4. A-Rod 3B
5. Ibanez RF
6. Chavez 1B
7. Granderson CF
8. Nunez SS
9. Stewart C
For all of you who have wished for Ichiro to bat leadoff, Girardi has answered your prayer. Swisher gets a rare full day off, mostly due to the fact that he’s been terrible against Shields throughout his career. Doesn’t look like a good matchup on paper, but stranger things have happened. GO YANKS!!!!!

I think it’s Chavez at first, not Swisher. See ESPN-NYY.
If that’s right, this lineup really makes me want to cry. Ichiro leading off? The Yankees least productive offensive player (except for Jones/Ibanez) really does not need _more_ at-bats. Ibanez instead of Dickerson? Considering Ibanez has not produced since June or so, maybe give someone else a chance? And Ibanez at 5, ugh. And Stewart instead of Martin. Ugh, ugh, ugh.
The following lineup will be the spiritual guide for the Yankees today:
Jeter
Mattingly
Gehrig
Ruth
Mantle
DiMaggio
Berra
Nettles
Richardson
What’s that Babe? Are you pointing out where that HR will go?
What? You’re pointing the way out for me?
Well, the nerve.
Goodbye.
Richardson?? If you don’t want to go with Cano, at least Willie Randolph. Or Joe Gordon. Or Tony Lazzeri.
Other than hitting and fielding, this is a good lineup.
I had a few things to do and take Katie for her walk. Pleasantly surprised at the score.
Shut down inning! Wahoooo!
Goodbye Ivan Grosny. Hello Super Nova.
The team has gone from super to stupor.
It is so hard to enjoy a game having to listen to the idiots on Fox Sports.
Tim McCarver makes my skin crawl. He’s so wrong about everything.
Buck to McCarver (approximately): Sometimes you get on a rant and I don’t know when you’re going to stop or what’s going to come out of your mouth.”
It’s too bad he and Howard Cosell never had the chance to have an Irritate-Off.
They talk about everything except what’s happening in the game.
Is Nova on a pitch count?
I don’t know.
Over/Under: Today’s Yankees’ Trivia will include 1.5 of the players in the Yankees Medium lineup.
if it was YES, I’d go over. But I can’t recall anything about FOX trivia. Do they even have it?
I didn’t realize that YES was blacked out for this game.
Not blacked out; they just don’t cover it.
I have one for you. Name the three Yankee players that have won 3 MVP awards as Yankees.
I know Berra did it, and I’m pretty sure DiMaggio did, too. So that leaves…it has to be Mantle, right? Not Ruth or Gehrig, who were too early.
Mantle, Berra, DiMaggio (Gehrig 2, Ruth 1)
A-Rod had 3 but only 2 w/Yanks
You were 3 for 3 and win a free listen to the next YES Yankee broadcast.
Jeter scratched that Itchy
He’s gotten 3 RISP hits in the last three games.
So today’s was a triple single
Oh, well. A home run with the bases empty to Longoria with a 4-run lead–I can handle that.
If everyone pitches like they have been and Andy returns like he was when he got hurt, CC would have to go to the pen for the playoffs. (tic)
Blalap…bupp…belooooozzz…ba-ding!
(Brain scramble)
This is–or used to be–a great MVP trivia question. Used to be able to ask it this way:
Only 9 major leaguers have won back-to-back MVP awards, and as it happens they form a complete team, one player at each of the 9 positions. Who are they?
However, it’s an old question and since then others have won MVPs back to back. So now it has to be, “The first 9…”
I don’t even remember all the answers. I’d have to look it up.
Many of these are guesses
P -Koufax
1b – Pujols (or is he too late)
2b – Morgan
ss – Ripkin
3b – Schmidt
lf – Yaz
cf – Mantle
rf – Williams
Pujols is late–not the first first baseman to do it. I think 1990 would be a good cutoff. But you got Mantle, Morgan, and Schmidt.
and Berra. I don’t see a pitcher than won 2 straight MVPs
Pitcher is Hal Newhouser, during the war.
Missed that after I looked, but would NEVER have guessed him.
Dinner break.
Nourishment > ball game
Usually can do both, but I’m not at home right now.
And suddenly the Yankee relief pitchers provide no relief.
Should have gone straight from Nova to Joba.
Robertson does the job in the 8th.
Thank you A-Rod
I do NOT understand why Stewart batted last inning and why Ibanez was in RF. Now they PH for him. UGH!
Girardi has made some weird moves lately.
If Sori blows this lead I will kill. I’ve missed the rout of VA by GA Tech and now the Fl v. TN game is on.
I don’t know ANYTHING about college football.
I haven’t followed it in years. Started getting back into last year. Lots of fun. Lots of unexpected plays & games.
Damn, I hate facing 0-17 guys. They’re due. But now 3-0 on him?
If they blow this, I … I don’t even know how to finish that sentence.
K and save.
Unnecessary roughness in that closeout.
Now if the alphabet remains in proper order tonight the Yanks can have a lead again.
Switching to FB. Chat y’all tomorrow.
booyakasha!! i think i saw skidmarks on the back of soriano’s jersey when he untucked it…must have had the shoot scared out of him?1!
