The talk coming into today’s game was all about Ivan Nova‘s ineffectiveness of late. In his previous two starts, he had given up nine earned runs to Baltimore and seven earned runs to Detroit and he also hadn’t won a decision since July 8.

Well, this afternoon Nova came out and quelled some of negativity, at least for now, with 7 1/3 innings of two-run ball, while surrendering only five hits and one walk. He also struck out 10 Blue Jays to help lead the Yankees to their fourth straight victory.

Neither team scored until the Yankees broke through against Blue Jays starter Aaron Laffeyremember him? – with four runs in the fourth inning. The biggest hit coming off the bat of Casey McGehee who hit a three-run home run to make it 4-0. Jayson Nix also had an RBI single.

The Blue Jays struck back in the bottom of the inning. Rajai Davis led off with a single, stole second and then scored on an Edwin Encarnacion single. Nova then hit Yunel Escobar with a pitch to runners on first and second with only one out.

Just as Yankee fans were about to start yelling about how the Yankees starters never have shut down innings and how they always give up the lead, Nova recovered by striking out David Cooper and getting Moises Sierra to ground out to first for the final out of the inning.

The Yanks stuck again in the sixth on an RBI ground rule double by Derek Jeter. It was Jeter’s 22nd double of the year and the 514th double of his career. After collecting two hits this afternoon, Jeter joined Hank Aaron as the only players in Major League history to have 17 straight season with 150 or more hits.

In the eighth, Encarnacion hit an RBI single with scored Davis and knocked Nova out of the game. David Robertson replaced Nova, threw one pitch, induced a double play and ended the inning.

Rafael Soriano pitched a 1-2-3 inning to earn his 28th save of the season.

The bottom third of the Yankees’s order, Nix, McGehee and Chris Stewart finished with four hits and four RBI – McGehee added a double to his three-run home run and Stewart hit a double as well.

The Yankees go for their fifth in a row and series sweep tomorrow afternoon with Phil Hughes looking to rebound from his disappointing start in Detroit.

Thanks. Wow, that’s an impressive era. Long man/ swing man with the hope that limited exposure to his crafty pitching would be successful? Hope so, always admired the guy. Maybe Phelps can give 60 pitches in a few starts?

Derek Lowe…….remember him? Back then? Very tough.
At first blush, on this…I said. This is good.
Homework first…Cleveland cuts him, ERA 6-8 something, Jesus.

Jimmy Toucan? I think I know him. Interesting guy…Take care.
