  1. Professor Longnose says:

I don’t think batting Granderson leadoff is going to decrease the number of solo homeruns he hits.

    • Phil C says:

On the one hand folks complain that Granderson is hitting too many solo HR, not productive enough. On the other hand, Hughes’ solo HRs are killing him.

Isn’t it like more than 60% of the time the lead off batter comes up with no one on? I don’t understand this move.

      • Professor Longnose says:

Today, I think it’s just a lefty-righty-lefty thing. But I’d like to see Granderson moved down int he order.

  2. Phil C says:

Most of the year I’ve been complaining about the Yankees BA w/RISP. I’m beginning to think it may not matter:

Prior to AS Break: 52-30, RISP = .230
    Since AS Break: 9-10. RISP = .310
Even not counting the last game vs. Balt. (7-13) RISP – .288

  3. smurfy says:

Nice start for CC. Good thing, a humid night to launch balls.

  4. smurfy says:

The Philly’s position for dealing Lee is not reasonable. To figure they had him for 1.7 seasons for 25 million, and they want to deal him for $95 million (plus the $12.5 mm buyout) for 3.3 seasons – and get top prospects.

And they got the youngest years for about $16 mm per.

    • Professor Longnose says:

Yeah, it’s crazy. If Amaro gets that, he deserves credit.

At this point it’s not a slam dunk that Lee is worth either the contract or the prospects. It would be a gamble probably worth taking, but it’s a bucketful of money.

      • smurfy says:

I’m a cheapskate, but admire Lee. Love to have him, but would limit the money to approx $20 per for his 32-36 years. And I’d give them a B prospect for letting them off the financial hook.

  5. smurfy says:

Tex misfired this first at bat back. Missed a fb down the middle, then blasted a ball foul. Betcha he catches one yet tonight.

  6. smurfy says:

    solid single by Swisha

  7. smurfy says:

Millwood dominated Eric Chavez. Eric gave them the weak grounder to avoid striking out, already committed to that pitch before it broke.

  8. smurfy says:

What happened to Phil C? Get caught in the TYA datbase trap?

I see you gave him a calculation to do, Prof.

  9. Professor Longnose says:

I didn’t think they’d get that out after CC knocked it toward third, but they did. Nice play.

  10. smurfy says:

Quick play by Eric! CC should let all balls go thru.

  11. Professor Longnose says:

    Itchy gets things started.

  12. Professor Longnose says:

    The low-OBP guys come through!

    Get ‘em in, guys.

  13. Professor Longnose says:

On the other hand, when there are guys on base, Granderson doesn’t need to hit home runs.

  14. Phil C says:

Nice surprise when I check the score and see Yankee runs scored. By the way Professor, assignment completed.

    • Professor Longnose says:

      And you get an A.

Interesting. I imagine the pitching is the reason for the difference in winning, but I wonder how much of an effect the RISP thing has on runs scored.

      • smurfy says:

When the Yanks got their run on, at 22-22, I saw it as mounting joy to see strong start after the next, till the boys started hitting better.

All the worry at the time was risp fails.

        • Professor Longnose says:

Early on, everyone was panicking about the rotation.

          • smurfy says:

oh, yeah, for pretty good reason. They were rough. But at 22-22, they were tearing hair out for risp hits. Remember, I said what they needed to do was start pitching (Phil was to go that night) and the risp furor would be forgotten? Best call I’ve made.

            • Professor Longnose says:

              Good call.

Right around mid-May, the negativity on riveravenueblues.com got so intense that, just to get under some skin, I began repeating that the Yankees would be in first place by June 15. I wasn’t taken very seriously, but the Yankees hit first on the 13th and they’ve been there ever since.

  15. smurfy says:

Boy, I wish we had snagged Kurt Suzuki, traded to the Nationals. He’d be good to share time with Russell as co-catchers.

  16. Professor Longnose says:

I hate it when the perfect game, the no-hitter, and the shutout are all lost on the same pitch.

  17. smurfy says:

CC threw a changeup/slider. Jesus was watching his bat flail as the pitch arrived over the plate.

  18. Phil C says:

According to GameDay Millwood’s losing mph on his fastball. I hope that’s accurate and the Yanks can get some more runs.

    • smurfy says:

He may be just forgetting to stress that. He’s looking very crafty, again. CC is quite horsey, tho, so I feel good with a slim lead. They’ll probably get something going.

  19. smurfy says:

Great stealth double. Pitchers shouldn’t interfere.

  20. smurfy says:

CC has really looked strong. Great pitches, killer sliders, good fastballs, spotted well.

    • Professor Longnose says:

Yeah, but I’d feel better with more runs.

      • smurfy says:

sure, but Millwood is spacing out the hits by changing speeds and mixing it up. We get one good hit an inning. Good thing we had that early rally.

Love giving Eric that boost – all he needed.

  21. Phil C says:

Damn, 7 hits by 7 different players. MEMO to team: You are allowed multiple hits tonight.

  22. Professor Longnose says:

100 pitches. OK, this is the inning to pound him out of the game.

  23. smurfy says:

Good clean Yankee fan exuberance. At least Thames didn’t make a big to-do over it. Sweet, bouncing atop the wall.

  24. Professor Longnose says:

Crimson Hose blew a 5-1 lead. Now 5-5.

  25. Professor Longnose says:

Runs! Runs! I want more runs!

  26. smurfy says:

Don’t love giving up outs with a bunt, but at least it moved two men up a base. Bet Jeter just wanted out of the box, quick.

Martin is brave. A curve at his ribs barely missed.

  27. Phil C says:

With that HR by Chavez, is that now 9 Yankees with at least 10 HRs?

  28. smurfy says:

    wow, love those timely singles.

  29. smurfy says:

Tex hit that pop so high, four infielders converged, and had time to figure out that a couple better cover bases.

    • Professor Longnose says:

Yeah, that was funny. They didn’t show how high it was, but it must have really been up there.

  30. Professor Longnose says:

I hadn’t realized Oliver Perez was still in the majors.

  31. Phil C says:

Has CC looked as good as the box score would indicate?

  32. Phil C says:

By the way guys, did I hear right today that Hamilton is blaming his slump on his trying to quit chewing tobacco?

    • smurfy says:

something about he promised the Lord, but he’s backsliding on tobacco juice.

    • Professor Longnose says:

I think he’s blaming not being able to, not the trying to quit. That is, the problem is that he’s not following God’s word, not that he’s having a physical problem.

      His latest statement:

Due to the speculation that occurred from my recent comments, I felt it was important to clarify what the “issue” was to which I was referring–both personally and professionally. The issue is “discipline.” Professionally, it’s been plate discipline. Personally, it’s been being obedient to the Lord in quitting chewing tobacco. I was hesitant to address the tobacco once again, because it’s an area that I’ve struggled with trying to quit in the past. I wanted to have some time of success “under my belt” before addressing again publicly, but feel I haven’t been given that option with all of the speculating out there as to what the “mystery issue” was. But there you have it. Discipline. Hebrews 12:4-5 and John 3:30.

  33. Phil C says:

Damn I’m slow today. Just realized that Martin was catching CC. I mean, knew they were both in the game, the connection just wasn’t made in my mind.

    • Professor Longnose says:

They asked Girardi about that and he said “It’s just time.” Personally, I thought it was time months ago.

  34. smurfy says:

CC must have had memories of Ryan bresaking up his last no-hitter.

  35. smurfy says:

Good thing we don’t have to worry much.

  36. Phil C says:

I just can’t help myself, I HAVE to type this. I guess the Lord wanted CC to win the game because Jesus made the last out.

  37. Phil C says:

I get to watch tomorrow’s game. So I’ll Chat y’all then.
