Game Thread: Sunday August 12th, Yankees at Blue Jays
What a difference a week makes. After falling to 6-12 over a stretch of 18 games, the Yankees have now run off four consecutive victories. They’re 7-3 over their last ten games and have reclaimed the best record in the American League. Winning the split of the series in Detroit was the turning point for this recent spate of bad play. Sweeping the Blue Jays on the road would confirm that the team has put its rough stretch behind it. Phil Hughes take the mound for the Yankees, looking to continue his resurgent season. The Blue Jays will counter with J.A. Happ. Enjoy.

Derek Lowe? You have to be kidding. The ONLY peripherals that are even encouraging are his GB rate and HR rate, Other than that he’s a disaster.
Anyway, on to a feast sweep. Since this is a travel day make it a moveable feast.
I think the home stand against the Rangers and Red Sox will be telling.
Agree. Phelps will pitch against both of them. That makes games like today important. Without CC the Yanks have to maximize wins against teams they should beat.
Did you like my Hemingway reference?
Right over my head. I’m afraid I haven’t read much Hemingway. Hills Like White Elephants and a few nonfiction essays is about it.
His memoirs about his time in Paris was entitled “A Moveable Feast.” I highly recommend “The Old Man and the Sea.” It’s been years since I read it, but it’s short and powerful. He’s definitely an American treasure.
I tried to read Faulkner once. After I got about 3 pages in and realized I was still in the middle of the first sentence, I gave up.
I couldn’t read him either. My favorite is probably Steinbeck.
The Old Man in the Sea impressed me deeply.
Faulkner: try the Rievers for a ten year old’s view of a motorcar trip to Memphis with your grandfather’s car and and friendly white and black family retainers. You may learn about whores and a whorehouse, from a young lad’s point of view. I learned a lot.
True, Derek Lowe stinks, but if he gets a victory against the Red Sox, it will be beautiful.
I wouldn’t pitch him against any team about Little League.
Phil, their scouts must have a hope if not a plan he’ll do better. We’ve surely got minor leaguers who could get beat up as bad as he has recently.
Did they have Stevie Wonder scout him? I know he comes very cheap, but what really worries me about the signing is that it’s only for 11/12 days. Or does that mean they are more worried about CC than they let on?
If they really plan to replace CC with Derek Lowe, they’re nuts. If they signed him because they might need a spot start and what the hell, that’s fine. A guy with a 5.4 ERA means that on average he’ll go 5 innings and give up 3 runs. They’ll take that for one emergency start.
I figured hed be long man, facilitating Phelpsie.
They probably do have stats in braille, so maybe. They’re already written in stone.
Hughes needs to step up and shut these guys down today.
I’d rather the hitters stepped up and pounded the ball.
I’m feeling greedy today. Go for both!
Encarna,,,,,the hell with it, Edwin, why give him ANYTHING to hit?
Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit!
Think they’ll get the message?
whut?
Could you repeat that please?
Liked the changeup that Martin underappreciated the drop on. Seeing it in slo-mo I keep thinking, “there’s the two seamer.”
Good combo on Encarnacion (just a c instead of a t, Phil), until the last pitch, anyway. (Bet they always say that.)
Since 1980, who’s the only player to win the AL Championship series MVP for two different teams?
Henderson? Ricky or Dave?
I have no idea. Have to wait until they give the answer.
Do you remember Richie Hebner? For a while, whatever team he was on would make the playoffs.
I remember him some.
Geez, Gomes has an arm.
I think they picked a bad day not to hit.
They’ll figure out Happ third time through the order.
I’ll buy that. (If it’s not too expensive.)
It’s free on Sundays.
OF course, it may be too late. Hughes is sucking eggs.
Hughes picked the wrong time to start stinking up the place again. Two terrible starts in a row and he next pitches vs Evil Empire.
All right, without Sabathia around Girardi is going to have to throw this game out, and leave Hughes or the 13th guy in to take a hit and save the pen.
This is basically a AAA lineup! What the hell is Hughes’ problem?
He’s a AA pitcher?
Certainly these last 2 starts.
Have we all forgotten how aggravating Hughes has been for years and bought into him being a legitimate mid-rotation starter so that two bad games in a row is surprising?
Noooooo!!! Please, do not tempt Girardi to use Phelps as the long man!
Agreed in spades.
Just to make Phil’s happiness complete, Senor Encarnacion had to beat well on his beloved curveball.
Well, they might as well lose by 10 as lose by 1.
Igarashi is warming up. That’s OK.
I guess Hughes is done. Instead of a feast, Hughes gives us toast.
Yankees do not live on toast alone.
Wow, first hit since the 1st inning.
One of the Po Boys gets it done.
I hate Girardi as a manager. You won’t win a game giving up 7 runs in 3 innings. You play to win today and let tomorrow take care of itself. Yes, it will be a short start but if you get 5 innings tomorrow, you already have Lowe planned to finish tomorrow’s game, so they should have used the pen early and try to save the game. As it is now, give the kid they brought up for the day the ball and let him finish it. Unlikely Yanks will score more than 7 so keep the rest of the own fresh.
In general, I agree. I understand that Girardi’s “algorithm” provides constancy and has strategic advantages, but I wish he would edge a little more toward game-winning tactics.
the scoreboard should have ding-ding-dinged as they toted up the runs.
there’s a dinger.
Phil C. was right: they’re figuring out Happ. But it’s kind of late.
we’re down 6 runs with three innings to get them. Late, very, but if we staunch them, might as well try.
Let’s see, 3 in the 7th, three in the 8th, and one more in the 9th. Perfect!
ding-ding goes Cano. Keep it up.
Sierra was funny. Tried to get to first so hard, his feet outran the rest of him.
Ah, I’m not going to get too anxious about a comeback. I don’t have the energy.
that’s ok, relax, old boy. Me and the Yanks got it. Have to get back two more they stole, tho.
You seem to be doing the job, so I’ll leave it in your hands.
10-7. Can I start aggravating about Hughes and Igarashi?
nope, might break the rally mood. It’s the Yanks tho, they must thrive on it.
OK, I’ll just mind my own business.
well, you could try cheering
aw, Swish, couldn’t you get to second?
Oh, Andruw…do you know?
bring back, bring back, bring back this game to me, to me
three down, two to go.
Damn. That was an important at bat.
we could re-adjust the budget. What do you think?
two and two, or three and one, or four at once?
there you go. It’ll have to be three in the 9th (at least).
Wow! 10-7??!!!! I fell asleep and missed the excitement.
They did get to Happ and then Lincoln pitched like a Studebaker!
let’s hope they got a hudson and a nash left for us.
Attaboy, Eppley! Way to staunch them.
My, such a word!!!
yeah, kinda bloody, if you think about it. Well, war’s war.
Everyone has a hit but Martin. And he was close to the Mendosa line. Actually one more gets him there.
I think I better go back to sleep real quick.
did you see the replay of Davis catch of McGehee’s bomb?
NO. I’ll look for it.
Damn. That close to being a 1 run game.
I wonder if Iggy-san goes back to AAA after today, get a fresh arm back for the Rangers? Who besides Wade is there and on the 40?
Warren and Justin Thomas.
one Derrick Lowe, I think.
Was thinking that Iggy would be unavailable tomorrow and now Eppley they’d want another arm. If was the Rangers I’d offer to pay Lowe’s contract if they’d use him against the Rangers.
Iggy’s expected to go back to AAA, already. Who’s Justin Thomas?
Thomas has 21.2 innings with Sea, Pit & Bos. Never heard of him before and don’t know how or why the Yanks got him.
Cooper has a beautiful, quick swing. Hope Rapada jerks him around effectively.
Man, that one armed half swing at the slider produced a pop to deep right center.
alright, batters ready!
Damn! 4-3 is not a bad road trip. But Hughes really blew it today. They should have swept the BJs.
gotta hope it helps him figure out his tactics. He has a great couple curveballs, and he used to have a right fine fb. Gotta re-discover it. His change, that one I saw, looked very fine.
Poof! well, that was better. Beat ‘em all next week!
I blame Andruw Jones.
Didn’t see ya there. Adios!
gotta blame somebody
I get to watch at least 5 games in the home stand. Chat ya tomorrow smurphy.
back, back, see ya!
