Game 113-Super Nova or Super Bad?

I got meatballs.....and I'm super bad!
First the good news on Ivan Nova. Believe it or not, he’s taken a big leap forward this year with some of his peripherals. His 20.5 K% this season is a big improvement over last year’s 13.9% rate. His Walk rate is down from 8.1% in 2011 to 7.1% this year. Looking at those numbers, you’d think that the slider he added last year was having the desired effect and that he was a young pitcher having a breakout year.
So what gives? He’s getting hit harder than he has ever been in the past. The biggest culprit has been his FB which has been getting destroyed. His BABIP is up a whopping 50 points over last year. If his batted ball stats were constant, that would suggest bad luck. But his LD% is up, GB% is down, and HR/9 has more than doubled. His strand rate is virtually identical from last year. This isn’t bad luck, he’s getting clobbered out there. But you knew that already.
Here’s your lineups from LoHud:
Jeter DH
Swisher 9
Teixeira 3
Cano 4
Jones 7
Granderson 8
Nix 6
McGehee 5
Stewart 2
Nova 1
GO YANKS!!!!!

Time to feast again on some BJ pitching. The Yanks should Laffey all around the bases this afternoon. Just hoping that Nova isn’t the feastee today.
I think we’ll get Acceptable Nova today.
I hope you’re right.
I’m glad Coney is doing the “color” today.
He’s good. I like Singleton, too.
He has a great voice for play-by-play.
That was an acceptable first inning for Nova.
Good breaking balls on the first two hitters. But Edwin (I won’t attempt his last name) just missed that one.
Text poll today: Which team has been more affected by injuries, Blue Jays or Red Sox.
Which made me realize that you could put together a hell of a good all-star team from AL East players on the DL this year.
Propose a new rule whereby the DL players can become a WC team.
Patience. Yankee hitters need more patience. Laffey is having problems finding the strike zone consistently and the Yanks are swinging at too many pitches out of the zone.
Nice quick inning again.
Ugh. They just said that Sabathia was walking around with ice on his elbow, and Girardi said there was a “low level of concern.”
Given that Girardi had no concern witheither Hughes or Pineda, and they missed a sesaon each, Sabathia could be on the DL for years.
Yeah, any elbow problem is ALWAYS a concern. Especially considering the number of innings CC has longed on it.
This should be a feast and the Yankee batters are on a hunger strike.
The Canuck younguns are swinging real early in the count. Three innings and Nova’s only thrown 28 pitches. The ‘pen could use a break today.
Maybe they’re starting something now.
Nice to see a Yankee score from second on a single.
Definitely. I like that aggressiveness by Tex & Thompson.
Fibber got one for Molly!
Now the Yankees are chowing down!
There you go, a meal in a minute.
Knew McGehee was hungry.
lol
McKee Foods makes Little Debbie snack cakes. I love Little Debbie.
The “subs” really came through that inning.
But will we see shut-down Nova or cough-it-up Nova?
His slider is back to killer status. Gotta whistle while they swing.
Has to maintain sufficient attention to Encarnacion, while he’s worrying about Davis stealing.
I’m confused. Was the count just wrong in the first instance? If it was, why didn’t Davis get second base?
Weird play. They called a balk on the pitch he stole on. So he gets the base, it goes as a balk, not a stolen base, and the pitch doesn’t count.
Oh…..I thought there was a 2nd balk, it must have been the replay.
Cough-up-some-of-it-but-get-a-grip-and-get-out-of-it-before-it-gets-ugly Nova.
It was his tribute inning to his good friend AJ.
They’re starting to run up the pitch count.
That is good. If Laffey comes out for the 6th they should strike fast before he gets pulled from the game.
The Hoagies are due up for the Yankees. Pile it on guys!
This is it, guys. Break it open like an egg!
These food references are making me hungry.
Bride: Honey, where are you taking me for our honeymoon?
Groom: A Blue Hay’s game, of course.
Bride: Damn, the romance is dead already.
They can take a day trip to Niagra Falls.
Nice! Jeter plates a Hoagie.
Order a pizza.
Pizza, roll over.
Or BBQ. Isn’t it supposed to be great in Texas?
I make great BBQ pulled pork & baby back ribs without ever touching a grill.
How?
Ribs, boil for 45mins to 1 hr. In crock pot add BBQ sauce, ketchup, and honey, mix. Place ribs in mixture and cook for 3 hrs. Be careful when taking out because the meat will fall off the bone.
Pulled pork. But in crock pot with some water and cook for 2 hrs. Take out, let cool slightly and pull apart. Do the same mixture and put pork in crock pot & cook an additional 3 hrs.
Here we go lipty loop.
smurfy? Where’d ya go?
I’m hanging around. Just not too talkative today.
Yak it up! Yankees are winning!
Nova just threw him a yakker.
Great to see Ivan resurrect his game. Garcia and he did better. Now, we just have to hope that CC’s elbow doesn’t fail us.
Yeah, he definitely had a decent game.
Like a comet in the sky, he comes back again.
Doesn’t seem right without the charcoal.
You could always add some liquid smoke.
It does sound good. I should try it.
17 straight seasons with 150 or more hits (something only 1 other player in MLB history, Hammerin’ Hank Aaron) for Derek Jeter, and you haters out there thought he was done eh?
Let me talk to you Yankee Haters. DEREK JETER IS BETTER THAN YOUR TEAM’S SHORTSTOP.
You should post that on overthemonster.com.
I really should!
I keep forgetting to mention this, but Frank Viola’s daughter is on the USA diving team. She didn’t qualify for finals though. I never saw Viola as concerned when he was pitching.
She’s the daughter of a Met. She deserves to lose.
As Monty Python would say, “A cruel man, but fair.”
Oh wow, look at that play by Curtis Granderson!
Boy, Granderson is such a turrible outfielder.
that was a really exciting play. He doesn’t get the best early read, but he can retreat faster than the ball flies. Great ability to catch those.
Phil, saw a highlight of the play you questioned last night. Tex hit it to shortstop, but the second baseman didn’t cover to get the doubleplay. Where was he? Answer: they were playing a shift on right-handed Tex, and he was positioned a bit deep behind and left of the bag. Probably haven’t practiced the play, he didn’t break fast enough, and the angle would have been quite awkward.
Some wrinkles in shifting.
Yeah. The replay I saw on Quick Pitch was better than what I saw last night. I’m sure the different positioning threw him for a loop.
Nova threw a cement mixer slider to Davis. Someone said he had problems with it, to righties. He gets a better focus with lefties.
Talk about economizing your pitches!
Did you know that the record for fewest pitches thrown while getting a win is zero?
I didn’t know that, but not surprised. My favorite is that Don Larson didn’t realize he was throwing a perfect game because he thought that was 27 pitches.
Can you imagine if the first 26 guys all made out on the first pitch, and the 27th guy didn’t take a pitch?
I’m trying to, but damn, I have no imagination.
Maybe Joe West would call it strike three.
Coney’s right, that was a very difficult relay that Nix threw to complete the dp.
Yeah, good play. Nix has been impressive. Does he have legitimate upside, or is this a fluke?
Career highs for him in triple slash, wOBA and wRC+. But I think he’s always been known as a good defended.
He looks a solid utility player, who you could live with during extended injury periods. Plays left, third and short well. Hitting-wise, I dunno, he hit 160 for Blue Jays last year, but he’s done fine for us.
A very pleasant surprise.
Crisp win.
Untuck.
