On the plus side I get to watch the game. On the minus, I have to listen to Matt Vasgersian. I do have a good feeling about this game. Porcello can be hit and the bigger stadium should help Hughes. Hopefully Martin will make sure that if no one is on NEVER throw a strike to Cabrerra or Fielder.

  2. Professor Longnose says:

Michael Kay is saying basically the same thing right now.

  3. Phil C says:

Hughes got both of them out with balls out of the strike zone. Maybe I’ll apply for a job as a pitching coach. Naw. Too much travel.

  4. Phil C says:

3 Ks for Granderson last night, 2 so far today. Me thinks he needs a night off.

  5. Phil C says:

Professor, didn’t Pettitte get his ankle examined again this week? Have you heard anything?

  6. Phil C says:

Porcello’s mom is happy, Jeter got a hit.

  7. Professor Longnose says:

Camera work was terrible on that. They never had the ball in view.

  8. Professor Longnose says:

Hughes got taken downtown with no one on. What happened to your advice?

  9. smurfy says:

Some wicked curve your pupil’s got.

    • Phil C says:

Hughes pitched well against Fielder and the first against Cabrerra. But he left that one pitch over the plate. And that hanger to Peralta.

      • smurfy says:

I don’t think it was a hanger, quite. It didn’t have as big a break, but at 3-2, he was trying to keep it in the zone. Peralta hit it, just on the line, but he’s not throwing hangers.

  10. Phil C says:

Damn, that was a LOT of pitches. The batters need to give Hughes some time to rest.

  11. Professor Longnose says:

If they keep hitting the way they are, they can pack in the season right now.

    Punt Ichiro. And Ibanez.

    • smurfy says:

that’s tough on Ibanez. Ichiro looks spent.

      • Professor Longnose says:

Ibanez has had some big hits, and that’s important. But the OBP stinks, and even with his power he’s a league-average hitter as a platoon DH. They should be able to do better.

  12. Professor Longnose says:

If Hughes pitches to Fielder this inning, I will spit in Girardi’s eye (metaphorically).

  13. Professor Longnose says:

    Not that it matters now.

  14. Phil C says:

I like Harold Reynolds on MLBN, but he must have a man crush on Suzuki because he thinks he’ll hit over .300 for the Yanks and that he can homer anytime he wants.

  15. Professor Longnose says:

Hey, remember the old days when managers took pitchers out of the game BEFORE they surrendered the lead?

Seriously, minus the snark, hasn’t it changed? Now they try to get the pitcher the win, and they won’t take him out until he’s losing.

    • Phil C says:

I thought in the old days the starters went 9 innings? lol

    • smurfy says:

It would be a mistake to think like that. I doubt Joe would worry over an ascribed win/loss, and guess he thought Phil was the best chance to get Cabrera. Would you bring in Phelps or Eppley to face him, then there’s two lefties. So, I guess he was caught in a tactical decision, which could cost the war.

      • Professor Longnose says:

Keep your eye out for it. It seems to me not just Girardi but most managers hesitate to take starters out if they’re not winning.

  16. Professor Longnose says:

    They can’t hit Rick Porcello!

  17. Phil C says:

Well Cody, that’s using the old noggin.

  18. Phil C says:

Great throw by Cano to get Dirks at 3rd.

  19. smurfy says:

Swish got a good junp on the gapper, made a good throw to Robbie who made a great relay. Hope they can use that to stir some hitting.

  20. Professor Longnose says:

OK, they can hold off on burning Ichiro at the stake until tomorrow.

  21. smurfy says:

hey, hey, Ichiro! And he disposed of Porcello. Phew, he was tough with those hard 2 seamers, using the corners well.

  22. Phil C says:

Damn, I missed that double. The dog needed to got to do doggy duty. But I did leave the rally tissue in a good position.

  23. Phil C says:

While the bottom of the Tigers batting order has hit in these two games, for the season the 5 to 9 hitters are batting .244 with a .673 OPS. That’s why they should not give Cabrerra & Fielder anything to hit.

  24. Phil C says:

This is the third consecutive game where I haven’t lost the connection.

  25. Professor Longnose says:

These games are painful to watch.

  26. Phil C says:

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: I’m now concerned about the Yankees. This slump has gone on too long.

    • smurfy says:

oh, but you see if we just keep it up a few more days, we can go to Texas and see who is in the more poignant mess.

  27. smurfy says:

Shove it, Flash and Michael K. Joba was working on my plan to sharpen his breaking balls before he throws fastballs fast but wide.

  28. tjo161 says:

Break out and analyze all the statistics you’d like, Nick wisher is a terrible baseball player. He’s trying to hit the Grand Concourse from Detroit. Two more months and he’ll be gone forever. Thank God.

  29. Professor Longnose says:

Well, at least one interesting at bat before they lose.

  30. Professor Longnose says:

A bonus: 2 interesting at bats.

  31. Professor Longnose says:

Oh, why couldn’t that have bounced around a little and let the tying run score? I have a feeling this will go to waste.

  32. Phil C says:

    Ugh. That hurts.

  33. Phil C says:

    Chat y’all tomorrow.

  34. hawaii dave says:

It appears that Tex should have bunted for a hit to maybe…..start a rally. But instead he tried to hit a 4 run homer over the shift to win the game. I wasn’t certain, so I checked with Elias, and they confirmed it. No one has hit a grand slam in the history of the game with no runners on base. It’s really hard to do. If Tex got on with a freebie, who knows, the next guy could have got a hit and maybe then a walk, then maybe a double, who knows. But it would have been another base runner and one less out. Just sayin.
