West coast trips are a pain in the rear end to begin with but staying up late to watch the Yankees lose on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth is just irksome. And I understand that the season is long and that games like this will happen from time to time but again, having it end at 1:15 a.m. in that way is just frustrating and it makes me cranky.
So what wasn’t frustrating about the game? Not much. The Yankees couldn’t get anything going against A’s started Tommy Milone who pitched seven strong innings. He only gave up six hits and struck out 10 Yankee batters.
Ivan Nova‘s line wasn’t as pretty and he was more lucky than good tonight. He lasted 6.2 innings and only gave up two runs so it was a “quality start” but he gave up nine hits – including four doubles and a triple.
The Yankees offense was Russell Martin who hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth to put the Yankees on the board – finally – and Robinson Cano who also hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Cano singled earlier in the game to keep his now 23-game hitting streak alive.
After tying the game in the top of the ninth, Joe Girardi brought in Clay Rapada who struck out Josh Reddick to start things off. Girardi took him out, replaced him with Cody Eppley who gave up three straight singles to Yoenis Cespedes, Jonny Gomes and Brandon Moss to lose the game 3-2.
The 43-game streak of scoring three or more runs was snapped and the Yankees are now in the midst of a two game losing streak. The A’s, who seem to be imitating the 2009 Yankees, walked off for the tenth time this season.

What did we expect? The Yankees built up a double digit lead in the ALE and came to a dead stadium against a very hot team. I have seen guys swing at balls, that are almost in the catchers mit. They were tired and flat. Have to expect a big win tomorrow.
Hughes should never pitch in Boston, everywhere else, I’m all for Hughes. He most likely shuts the A’s out tommorow and guys can actually hit a mediorce fastball, after 2 days out West.
I am a lifelong As fan and was at the game last night. May I make an observation? Your ball players get paid too much and they don’t even look like they are trying. The Oakland Coliseum was hardly “dead”, in fact a native New Yorker that I was sitting next to was very impressed with the boisterous As fans and even more impressed by the way the young As hustled and played REAL baseball. Of course, if any of the As players get too good, then they get traded to the Yankees anyway. It’s tough being your farm team, but we’re hanging in there.
So I guess the Yankees didn’t play hard in their 57 wins so far this season? And they also don’t play real baseball?

Nothing like the usual Girardi over-managing. Why does he take out a pitcher who strikes out a batter, then leaves in one who gives up nothing but hits? To quote Bugs Bunny, “What a maroon!” The smell of a sweep was becoming palpable after this one.
