The Yankees have reached an agreement with first round pick Ty Hensley according to K Levine-Flandrup of Scout.com. Hensley was expected to go in the middle of the first round, but somehow fell to the Yankees 30th pick overall. At 6’5″ and 220 lbs,t he right handed pitcher sits low 90′s with his fastball, but has the ability to touch the upper 90′s. With better conditioning and mechanics, the 18 year old has could reach the majors throwing extremely hard, and he’s hoping that only a couple years away. Hensley is likely a top 5 prospect in the Yankees system, and falls somewhere around Jose Campos in in terms of pitchers. EJ wrote about Hensley previously, and has a more detailed description, along with some video.

  1. Michael says:

Heard the Yankees have found structural abnormalities in his shoulder during an MRI. No, I aam unfortunately not kidding…

  2. Ed Perez says:

Perhaps it’s a little more clear now why Hensley fell as far as he did in the draft…

    • T.O. Chris says:

I don’t think anyone saw the MRI results coming. He didn’t have an MRI pre draft that I know of and originally the Yankees offered him a larger signing bonus, reducing it after looking at the MRI. That would suggest to me they had no idea he had anything that would be a red flag, so how would other teams know?

    • SDM says:

only the team that drafted him, would have access to his medicals. So know he didn’t fall because of that, he has no injury history.

  3. Scout says:

I can’t fault the Yankees on this one. High school players are not obligated to take MRI or other tests before the draft, and the reports also indicate he showed no symptoms of shoulder issues when he was on the mound. The lower bonus is an appropriate response. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the issue does not affect his pitching, because shoulder injuries are much more difficult to overcome than a bad elbow.

  4. Bonab12 says:

Hensley, is not injured guys. I am an ortho and if the kid has never had symptoms and a has a normal exam and MRI is only 10% of the diagnosis. Bet he could go to 1 different docs and get 10 different readings…especially in shoulder. We are doing better, but lost to learn still in that area and things can mimic things on MRIS..we will see. 90% of all pitchers, especially those who throw as hard as he does have abnormalities in their shoulders…think we just may see them talked about more with the new CBA unfortunately.

    • T.O. Chris says:

I don’t think anyone ever said he was injured, just that there were some abnormalities which may or may not be a red flag, so they reduced the signing bonus to reduce the risk on the teams part. It’s nothing to get benty out of shape about, just something to follow as he moves up the ranks.

      • SDM says:

Actually Bonab12 has a point, look in other Yankee fan blogs you’d think these people found out he’d need total reconstructive surgery on his arm.

        • T.O. Chris says:

Oh I didn’t know that. I tend to stick with TYA, no other commmunity suits my interest for intelligent conversation.
