Yankees Keep On Rolling, Sweep Blue Jays

In the beginning there was lightning, in the end there was more lightning coupled with lots of rain and in between there were nearly seven full innings of good baseball by the Yankees and they swept the Blue Jays behind a strong outing by Hiroki Kuroda.

Kuroda held the Blue Jays scoreless in those seven innings and now has a streak of 30 scoreless innings in day games. More Kuroda goodness: Today’s outing was his third career complete game (even at only seven innings). The first two occurred in 2008 and were also shutouts. He threw 108 pitches – 78 for strikes, gave up four hits, did not surrender a walk and struck out five Blue Jays. Kuroda kept the Jays in check and they ended up 0-7 with runners in scoring position.

Dewayne Wise was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Mark Teixeira was also 2 for 3 with a two-run home run – his nineteenth on the season. That home run put the Yankees up 3-0 in the first inning and help extend their now 42-game streak of scoring three or more runs in a game.

Teixeira has been a bit of a roll in July. In 13 games he’s batting .326 with six home runs, 19 RBI and has scored 13 runs.

Robinson Cano continued his hitting streak which is now at 21 games. It’s the longest since a 25-game hitting streak by Derek Jeter in 2006.

The Yankees had no trouble with Ricky Romero scoring early and often. They had a 4-0 after the bottom of the first.

For the Jays, their bad injury luck continued when Brett Lawrie took a spill in the botto of the third inning into the concrete camera well next to the Blue Jays dugout. He was trying to catch a foul pop up by Teixeira. Lawrie missed the ball, tumbled over the railing and ended up with a calf contusion. When he was taken out of the game, it looked like it could be a lot worse.

Up next for the Yankees, a series with the Athletics in Oakland. They completed this homestand 5-1 against the Angels and Blue Jays. Not too shabby for the best team in baseball.
