According to Mark Hale of the New York Post, the Yankees have traded for Chad Qualls. The right handed reliever, and former setup man, currently has a 4.60 ERA on the season, a 5.5 K/9, 2.6 BB/9, and an 11.2 H/9. He’s also posted a career high 2.0 HR/9, a scary mark for a right handed reliever making his way to Yankee Stadium. The deal will send the Phillies a player to be named later or cash considerations.

This move makes me wonder if someone in the bullpen is hurting … or if the respective setbacks of Chamberlain and Aardsma are more serious than previously suspected (though, reports with respect to Chamberlain have been fairly varied).

For whatever it’s worth, Qualls isn’t a bad option for the match-up happy Girardi. He’s held righties to a .250/.278/.382 line with 4.62 K/BB and a tick under 1 HR/9 this season (.255/.311/.391, 3.22 K/BB, 0.99 HR/9 career) and he’s always been good at picking up grounders. He’s not a bad middle relief option.

Agreed, could be a response to Aardsma’ elbow issue, or maybe something is up with Wade. I personally like Eppley and Rapada better than Qualls at this point, so I’d be disappointed to see them go.

      • Domenic Lanza says:

I can’t imagine that this means Rapada’s job is in jeopardy – something like 70% of his batters face are left-handed. It would be something of a disaster if the team replaced him with a ROOGY.

I am somewhat bearish with Eppley, though. His results have been pretty stellar thus far, but he’s getting by on with nearly as many walks as strikeouts. Qualls’ bottom line is ugly, but his numbers against RHB are quite good. I don’t know how much a marginal upgrade at ROOGY is worth, though.

May just be because Wade has been rough recently, and Sabathia and Pettitte going down is going to tax the pen.
