Even great teams drop a few in a row to bad teams, for no good reason. Despite this three game skid the Yankees still have a strangle hold on first place in the AL East. They still find themselves twenty games above five hundred. They still have the best record in baseball, even if the Rangers are hot on their heels. Put another way, once you look at the big picture it becomes clear that the Yankees could afford to drop a few. That said, let’s hope it ends today. CC Sabathia toes the rubber for the good guys in his second start off the DL. Former Yankee Bartolo Colon takes the mound for the Athletics. I’d say there’s a 50-50 chance the Yankees light Colon up, but a pitcher’s duel definitely remains in the cards.

    Lost Weekend.

  2. Professor Longnose says:

Hey, MIke, I know you’re trying to do an end run around the negativity, but it’s not working; I still need to let it out.

HEY, YANKEES! You suck! I don’t care how many games ahead you are, you won’t win the division! Or if you do, you’ll get knocked out of the playoffs in one inning! You can’t hit with RISP! You make too much money! You don’t have mustaches! Cashman couldn’t rappel his way up to the top of CC Sabathia! YOU STINK!

Didn’t work. I still feel rotten

  3. #Yankees got something cooking, 2 runners on and nobody out.

  4. I’d Rather have 1 run bloop hits than nothing at all!

  5. Phil C says:

I’m having to follow this one on GameDay. Looks like the A’s are swinging early on CC.

    • Professor Longnose says:

Yeah. Only 28 pitches in 3 innings. But the As don’t hit. They’ve just been getting off the charts pitching lately.

  6. Professor Longnose says:

The Crimson Hose are being pounded back into last place.

    • Phil C says:

It’s a final 15-7. Lester gave up 11 runs in 4 innings. Next they play the Rangers and then the Yankees. Let’s hope they are really buried by the end of the week.

  7. Phil C says:

Lots of 2 HR games today. That means Granderson has a 2nd one in him.

  8. Phil C says:

Is CC allowed 100 pitches today?

  9. Professor Longnose says:

    Nix blew it. Damn.

  10. Phil C says:

Big base running mistake by Inge….thank God.

  11. Phil C says:

The 7th inning sounds like a good time to score some more runs.

  12. Professor Longnose says:

Didn’t expect them to take out Colon, who was only at 84 pitches.

  13. Does this Norberto guy actually wake up to that face every morning?

I seriously wonder what some guys are thinking when they make these decisions. Does he actually think that looks good?

  14. Phil C says:

Let me give an illustration of RISP problems for the Yanks. In game I haven’t watched they are 17-19 and batting .190 w/RISP. Games I’ve watched they’re 40-18 and batting .261 w/RISP.

    • Professor Longnose says:

We have to take up a collection to get you an Extra Innings package.

      • Phil C says:

It’s weird because the past 2 years the record was the opposite. I always thought that was because the networks & MLBN broadcast the games against the better teams.

        • Professor Longnose says:

I don’t think the Yankees have a great record on national television. At least, to me it seems they have their worst games on Fox and ESPN over the last bunch of years.

  15. Professor Longnose says:

    Go, Asdrubal Cabrera!

    • Phil C says:

Damn. The Indians had to collapse now? They couldn’t have waited until after the series with the O’s?

  16. Professor Longnose says:

Is the 8th inning good for Yankee runs?

  17. Insurance runs, please.

    • Professor Longnose says:

We’ve been asking for innings and it hasn’t worked. Maybe we should try reverse psychology.

      • Phil C says:

Very unusual game, they scored in the 3rd & 4th innings. No 1st inning runs and so far nothing from the 6th on.

        • Professor Longnose says:

Well, they figured their usual pattern wasn’t working this series, so they went to something different.

    • Professor Longnose says:

Sabathia threw 98 pitches. I don’t think he was taken out because of the pitch count so much, just the inning.

      • Hes still working his way back from the DL stint. Also, I think Girardi noticed how good his arm felt after the time off, and wants to keep him fresh for the long haul.

        • Professor Longnose says:

Makes sense. I’m not complaing. I just think if he had thrown 105 pitches in 7 innings, that would have been OK with Girardi, too.

  18. Phil C says:

I wonder when the last time was that Jeter batted 7th in the order?

  19. Robertson has such deception. Cespedes is a dead red hitter and he missed that as if he didnt pick it up.

  20. Professor Longnose says:

    Phil, you’re going to Syracuse?

  21. Phil C says:

Wow! I didn’t think Chavez was going to get him.

  22. Damn, Wise looks bad against a tough lefty.

  23. Phil C says:

Sori needs to put an end to these walk-off wins bye the A’s.

  24. Professor Longnose says:

    #!@$%#%#@%#@!!!

  25. Apparently, the ‘S’ word gets caught in the filter. I didnt know that.

  26. Phil C says:

Well, at least the heart of the order is due up. I hate that the Yanks just wasted two good pitching performances.

  27. smurfy says:

Ro, So, no Mo. Who’s left to pitch? Phelps, Rapada, Logan.

  28. Professor Longnose says:

    Gurple. Fnack. Berph!

  29. Obviously, everyone will point to Soriano if they lose this game. But even Closers will give up a run here and there. This entire series has been a combination of good As pitching and offensive malaise by the Yanks.

  30. smurfy says:

    Freddie v. Felix. That’s interesting.

  31. Professor Longnose says:

When was the last time Alex Rodriguez hit a game-winning homer?

    • smurfy says:

      long gone, long gone

      • smurfy says:

you were right last August: Alex doesn’t have the flexibility he used to, to get to the low outside pitch. It’s a big hole, to balance against a weakness inside.

        • Professor Longnose says:

I don’t think I said that. Maybe it was T.O. Chris.

        • smurfy says:

no, neither. You voiced doubts of Alex’ power, tho he was hitting the gaps with liners, and I was hopeful. Color me less, now, unless they can spin that blood faster, or Goldie’s daughter comes back.

          • Professor Longnose says:

I definitely had and have doubts about his power, although I don’t remember analyzing his swing. That sounds more T.O. than me. In any case, it sounds plausible that that’s what’s going on.

I wonder how he stacks up against other clean-up hitters in the AL. He must be toward the bottom of the list.

            • smurfy says:

No, the analysis was mine. I am sorry if the reference was blurry.

Well, that it surely is, stastistically. More concerned with the future, the chance of overcoming a flaw, a health problem in this case.

              • smurfy says:

                sasistically, I guess.

              • Professor Longnose says:

                Ah. Good analysis, then.

That German treatment, or whatever it was, was supposed to help, but it hasn’t given him back the power. Maybe it will come back yet. We’ll see.

  32. Phil C says:

Looks like it’s Phelps’ game for as long as it goes on. (How were my apostrophes there smurfy?)

  33. Professor Longnose says:

    Nix’s bobble lost this game.

  34. smurfy says:

let me contribute a quick second thought: No, Joe, the game may have a ways to go!

  35. Phil C says:

I can’t believe Girardi took Phelps out!!!

  36. Professor Longnose says:

    On. On. On. Slam.

    Let’s go.

  37. Phil C says:

Two lucks on one play for Tex.

  38. smurfy says:

Cody Eppley? Wasn’t he already in? Am I watching the encore, or has that been foreshortened, anyway?

  39. Professor Longnose says:

Mix and match int he 12th inning with no one on base? He can’t do that. Swisher isn’t around to come in to pitch.

  40. smurfy says:

Get ‘em good, Cody. Only Logan, Qualls, Wise, no, scratch that last.

Ooh, keep ‘em off it, lad!

  41. Phil C says:

Has Eppley caught Corey Wade disease?

  42. smurfy says:

Sweet analysis of Robbie’s good play there by Coney.

Oh, I see, Joe. We weren’t going to need more.

  43. Phil C says:

    Chat y’all later!

  44. Professor Longnose says:

Girardi went looking for someone who would give up a run, and he finally found him.

  45. smurfy says:

Ah, I had a foreboding feeling about this series.

Wonder how it goes in Seattle? A battle? Freddie vs. Felix? Old buddies battle? The old Chief facing the established King?
