Game Thread: White Sox vs. Yankees, Sunday July 1st
Today is old-timer’s day at the Stadium, hence the game’s 2pm start time. For those who don’t know, the Yankees charge a little bit more for premium games. These games include opening day, all games against the Mets and Red Sox, among other teams, and old-timer’s day. I still don’t get it. I have about as much interest in watching pitchers hit in three spots in the lineup as I do in watching a bunch of retired major leaguers goof around in Yankee Stadium. Evidently mine is a minority opinion. When the real Yankees take the field they’ll look to Phil Hughes to salvage a split of the four game series against the White Sox. Chicago will counter with Gavin Floyd. Enjoy.

Im not old enough to remember any of these guys. Hell I barely remember the 90s
Lets hope Hughes has drank plenty of gatorade. How out there today
Rios always seems to hit Hughes hard
If you looked at the box score and saw that the pitcher only threw 14 pitches (11 strikes) you’d never guess he faced 6 batters and gave up 3 hits & 2 runs.
They gave that k to Phil, either to honor a fine, fooling curve, or ‘cuz it’s too hot to linger.
Phil had trouble hitting spots with fb. Hope he can regulate his temperature, but still steam it.
All right boys this is the kind of pitcher the Yankees should be able to do some damage against.
First two guys agree with you.
Let’s get back in the game.
Bases loaded…kiss of death?
ooh, I like the ring of, “and the bases are loaded for Cano.”
oooh, no
Okay Cano. Time to show that the your RISP average is just a fluke like iv been telling everyone…
Wow, Cano’s OBP up to .370.
He is showing more patience this year than in any other year id say. And the ability to never hit with RISP. Hes not clutch!! Not a true Yankee!!
ewww, crushed hopes. Hope that doesn’t smell too bad.
Baffling really
that slider in on the lefties hands is nearly an ideal pitch, especially for a lefty with strong ambitions.
Before that 1st inning the Sox were batting .291 w/RISP! Damn, in the Yanks can fix that problem they could run away with the division. But I’m beginning to think it’s going to be a year long problem.
Isn’t it already more than a year-long problem?
For Cano, there’s only been one year when he was good with RISP,as I remember. I should look it up, though.
I just don’t know what it is mann. Cant be explained
I believe the Yanks were around middle of the league the past few years.
I gotta look at the data. I know the issue’s come up before, but it may have been just perception.
#toomanyhomers
Nice, calm, heady swing Eric. Back to even.
Just amazing.
Jete was hoping the heat waves would ride it out.
The ball really is carrying well to RF, scares me with Hughes pitching.
Dunn down, anyway.
Rios timed that curve well.
Alright.
You know, I dreaded listening to Lou and Paul, but they were very insightful yeaterday. I figured out Paul can talk blather with Michael, but he’s very aware of what’s happening, in a very deep sense. So I quit listening when the story sounded to be long, and it all worked out. Skillful muting.
I’m watching on TBS. They interviewed Goose & Bernie.
They were in the YES booth, too. Both good guys.
Runner on first, no problem for Cano.
THAT’s what he was thinking of!
and Swish really clipped that. More! More!
Just to balance it out, I want the stats on the Yankees’ hitting with a runner on first only.
it’s ok for Swish to take 2cd, right?
Nooooo! Stay on first!
you answered before I asked.
67 pitches in the bottom of the third.
Martin’s OBP is fabulous for a guy hitting .188.
yeah, nobody mentions that.
Easy one. Sal Maglie.
Who’s that guy wearing Hughes’ uniform? The real Phil Hughes doesn’t throw that many strikes.
I think he’s off his nibbling ways. Like Paul O’Neill said (oh, yeah, you watching TBS), Phil searches for what works. So he’s testing, then trying different stuff, but generally stays aggressive.
Loved Gavin Floyd’s cap brim going up on Robbie’s liner by him.
Corners are wide today, Raul.
Nice liner, Chavez! One hit now, a big one, would…
oh, hey, Russell. How you holding up?
Chad Qualls?
he hasn’t looked good this year, tho people used to think highly of him. Reclamation project.
He’s the best player in major league history with the last name Qualls.
when I was playing baseball, the sun field was usually right. Definitely left, third base line, here.
Wow! You played so long ago that the earth’s tilt has changed?
wait a minute. No, it hasn’t been that long!
remember it like it was yesterday.
Boy, Viciedo really wanted a fb. Strike 3 was at his hatbrim.
Only 87 pitches but it’s hot. I don’t know how much longer Hughes should pitch.
Innings 2 through 7 have been Cy Young quality.
Balt lost. If the Yanks hang on and win their lead will be 6!
I don’t think the O’s will hang in there much longer. Time to start worrying about the Red Sox.
Yeah. Boston worries me the most. I hope the Yanks have a big w/e against them.
Ta, Tex. Nice grab!
Mo time!
…
So made a good imitation. Hey, hey.
With Robertson having problems as a closer, I bet Sori opts out & tries to get more $ and years from the Yanks.
Doesn’t look like the Yanks are in big spending mode but it may be out there for him.
And the shirt comes out.
CC, Nova, Hughes & Kuroda each have a shot ar 20 wins.
If they all get it that would tie the record.
That would be something else. Memories of the Earl of Weaver.
I hope the Yanks hit TB like a hurricane. Chat y’all there.
Yeah!
