Game 88-Sweep the genius

"Where's Joe Torre when you need him?"
Remember when the Yanks couldn’t beat the Angels? Our own newly acquired trade acquisition Stacy Gotsulias (as part of the Eric Shultz deal with RAB) was wondering just that yesterday, and here’s my thoughts on the topic. The Angels manager garnered that monicker from the national media largely by beating what were viewed as vastly superior Yankee teams. But in hindsight, the 02-08 were a far cry from the 95-01 dynasty teams that preceded it. His aggressive style of running the bases was tailor made to attack the Yanks defensive liabilities at Catcher and in the outfield. Since 08, the Yankee overall defense has been much better, bullpen performances have improved and lo and behold ole Mikey doesn’t look as smart as he used to. Some of the credit goes to Cashman for getting the roster younger and more athletic, some to Girardi for his superior bullpen management, and some blame must fall to Torre. Torre played ‘his guys’ regardless of the opposition, and wasn’t one to pore over advanced stats or play match ups. Even Joe Torre’s staunchest defenders would allow he was never a great in-game manager, rather more of a clubhouse guy (whatever that means).
On the mound for the Yanks is RHP Nova facing Angels ace Jared Weaver. The Yanks seem to handle Weaver pretty well, he has a career 4.79 ERA facing the Yankees and a 5.88 ERA at Yankee Stadium. But much of that came before his breakout season in 2011 when he faced the Yanks twice and held them to a 1.88 ERA, both of those games played in Anaheim. Weaver is very much a fly ball pitcher (47.9% career) and that could explain his troubles in YS3. For Nova’s part, for his career he is 3-1 with a 5.11 ERA facing the Angels. Srap yourselves in folks, looks like it could be a bumpy ride this afternoon.
Here’s your lineup, courtesy of LoHud:
1. Jeter SS
2. Granderson CF
3. A-Rod 3B
4. Cano 2B
5. Teixeira 1B
6. Swisher RF
7. Ibanez LF
8. Chavez DH
9. Martin C
GO YANKS!!

Little known fact. Stacy is the founder of Sulia, she just decided to drop the “Got” part because the promo campaign reminded people too much of the milk commercials.
All true.
Heh.
Well, time to bring the brooms. Time for New York Yankees baseball!
I’m always happy just to win a series, EXCEPT when the one loss is the last game of the series.
I’m watching on TBS. I love Boomer’s recommendation after the back-to-back HRs,, “I’d move their feet.”
Haha good one Boomer! BTW he’s on Twitter now
Damn.. Well both of our wins we trailed anaheim at 1 point in those games, plus we’re the come back kings.
Yeah, not to worried about 2 solo shots, yet.
You don’t have to worry, because A-rod gets the runs back on 1 swing!
Im sorry I blinked. 2 homers already huh? Those pitches were both middle of the plate. Cmon Nova dont mess around. Not really giving Nova those low strikes though early on
I noticed two pitches in the same exact spot, one called a strike, the other a ball.
One thing I really like about Nova more than I have seen in any other young pitcher the Yankees have brought up in my time watching the team is how he responds to pressure and adversity. He doesnt get rattled, he adjusts. I know he will never be a number 1 or 2 starter but neither was Pettitte.
Weaver is scary good but for some reason the Yankees always seem to hit him. Hopefully that trend continues today
Sure did on that one by A-Rod.
Still some pop left in that bat. Silence the critics ARod good job
Yankees seem to love the 1st inning recently.
Seems that way huh? A far cry when they used to grind it out and then eat the opposing bullpens alive.
The past week or so I sometimes lose this site and get a message that says something like “Error establishing database connection.” Anyone else having problems?
yeah, I got that today, at about 1:30, and have maybe twice in the past week.
Nova looked better in that inning.
That’s the 2nd time I’ve lost the connection and had trouble re-establishing it. From the lack of comments looks like others are having problems.
First Jeter, then Cano, then A-Rod. This is amongst the worst base running I’ve seen.
Jesus Christ. Extremely poor baserunning by the Yankees.
Beyond even rookie mistakes.
Gotta be Gehrig and Mattingly. Don’t know the third.
What’s the question?
Three Yankees with 50 doubles in a season. I remember when Mattingly broke Gehrig’s team record.
Inaez gave me a scare there.
Especially after Jeter gave up on it. However that Granderson catch has to be the highlight of the game.
I didn’t see it. Sterling said it was great, but I wouldn’t take Sterling’s word on things like that.
It’s up on GameDay. How about DiMaggio for the third answer.
They gave the answer. It was Alfonso Soriano. Funny that I remembered Mattingly doing it from the 90s, and clean forgot Soriano from the 2000s.
Grandy’s catch was beautiful
2nd nice running catch by Ibanez. Where’d he get the speed?
Those “See Ya” shirts look nice.
Good play by weaver for the 1-3 DP
Geez, they’re really blowing their chances to drive Weaver out of the game.
Now Chavez. The Yanks must have taken dumb pills before the game.
64 pitches by Weaver through 4 innings. But 4 ours were stupid base running mistakes and one other DP. The Angels are batting 9 times, and the Yanks have given up 1.1 innings of possible ABs. Really putting the pressure on Nova.
I pretty much wrote this game off before it started. But then, getting the chance to win it anyway makes potentially blowing that chance really frustrating
Granderson….. MAKES THE CATCH!
Wow. Was Granderson catch No. 1 better than Granderson catch No. 2?
Much….not even close.
Curtis with another good play.
Wow. This is going to be an ugly loss.
Home run izturis..
Two HRs to light hitters, damn! Nova’s control has been off all game and horrendous in this inning.
A wunnerful, wunnerful. Time to tune the bats up, and run the bases so they stay on for a ride.
Plenty of time to come back, but they simply cannot give them any more outs on the bases.
Granderson with a long solo home run.
oh, yeah, THAT’s what I was thinking, Curtis.
That’s one way to avoid base running mistakes.
All right, Granderson! OK, get some guys on and pound Weaver off the mound!
(Somebody stop me before I get nauseated from the emotional ups and downs.)
Weaver got serious with Arod.
I have looked into my crystal ball and see another GW hit by Martin.
we need a lefty so Tex can bat righty. He’ll save us, surely.
I know you’re right!
what? I thought only Phil C had that unanimous acclamation.
Yeah, I was replying to him, not you.
oh, thanks.
lol
Nova shouldn’t have started the inning.
I was just about to type that! He’s really having problems locating his curve ball and most are up.
More ugly. Gave up a run on a botched DP (Jeter’s fault). And why did Teixeira tag Pujols instead of touching first?
Sorry, thought that was three outs. The run would have scored anyway, so they lost nothing. Still, ugly, though.
great point about tagging the bag.
interesting dp. Jete coughs and Tex tickles.
Time for a 7th inning rally!
You’re right! The 7th inning is just about the perfect time for a 7th-inning rally!
Don’t you just hate when 7th inning rallies happen in the 8th?
Ha ha ha ha ha…
Johann coughed up 6 runs within the space of 7 hitters in the bottom of the 5th for the Urbanites, who trail 6-0.
Did anyone see the show on MLBN with Costas & Seinfeld on Abbot & Costello’s Who’s on First?
Not me. I love A&C, though.
Raul, so cool.
Excellent, Chavez! One run, two seconds.
Angel pen is tough. They gotta get it done.
Hey, Phil C, maybe you saw a game-tying homer from Martin?
No. I guess it happens in the bottom of the 9th.
YankeesGalaxy fail, that was chavez, not raul :/
I think our comments today have been like the Yankees base running.
I know right? lol
Raul is still cool, but Chavez is the current Wiz.
The a-hole factor has sprung out viciously among YES commentators.
So just another day at the office for them?
I’ve enjoyed the buzz today, but when they get lit up by what numbers Coney wore, then launch into a graphic about Coney’s career, meanwhile Chad Qualls is deciding our fate…
Jays leading 3-0 on the Tribe
Orioles trail Tigers 3-0
3-3 game between Sox and Tampa
Mo oughta teach Chad his cutter, since Chad’s slider no slide.
Ah, it’s over.
this is gonna be a tough loss unless they got another miracle comeback in their bones
Why is Girardi suddenly expecting multiple innings from his relievers?
They score 5 against Weaver, and still lose. What can you do? Nova didn’t do the job, the pen didn’t do the job.
Logan? Aybar batting .305 as a righty and .248 from the left side. Did Joe lose his binder?
Didn’t matter with a squeeze play on. (By the way, love their music.)
Their lead singer (Townsend?) is delightfully expressive.
I get the weirdest looks from my dog when I play “Cool for Cats.”
Heard “Coffee in bed” clip in an ad the other night, Googled it, to figure that out, but the name escapes me. Outstanding, tho.
Come on Yankees, you can hit Issy.
The Yankees beg to differ.
They sure did.
one more run in about one second.
Gotta go.
See ya. Wouldn’t want to be ya.
Trumbomb.
Game Over.
I hate to admit it, but it is.
Off day for the Yankees today, get ‘em tomorrow.
DJ is learning what pitches don’t work.
Marlins down 4-0, but have the bases loaded & 0 outs in the bottom 9th.
Nationals win 4-0
ok, let’s just load the bases now, and give it another try.
Yanks within a field goal.
1st run Frieri allowed as an Angel.
Why isn’t Jones batting?
guess they wanted to fill the bases a little more.
OK….that explains it.
how’d you do that?
ahem…look who’d up there now.
oh, Grandy Man can.
oh, man, oh, man!
ho,ho. Chewed up another closer.
Walk, Grandy forces a run in with a base on balls, 10-8 Angels
Exciting finish.
A-rod 0/6 vs Jepsen
rats. Bet he catches it for this.
damn…..they had dug too big a hole to climb out.
Thanks, Alex Rodriguez!
Chat y’all tomorrow.
