In a relatively small move, the Yankees signed Kosuke Fukudome to a minor league deal. While I am not sure where he falls on the organizational depth chart – behind Chris Dickerson, I imagine – this is a no-risk, low-reward move that could be significant, for better or worse, if Gardner’s injury woes continue.

  1. Phil C says:

Glad that Kuroda kept Trout off the bases to start the game.

  2. Phil C says:

Interesting. Directv has a free week of MLB Extra Innings. I was watching the MLBN game feed and then switched to My9 and the MLBN feed is slightly ahead of My9. Weird.

  3. Phil C says:

I’ve NEVER seen that. Callaspo actually swung at a ball AFTER it was in the catcher’s mitt!

  4. smurfy says:

Wow – hey, Phil – Tex has been all over the pitch, both at bats. And what a fine, fine, rangy play on Kendrick’s bouncer. Fabulous start for a re=charged Tex!

  5. Phil C says:

Hey smurfy. All in a day’s work for Tex.

  6. smurfy says:

Yeah – I’m still steamed to see UDF, or whatever that lame defense rating is, that they gave him, a travesty.

    • Phil C says:

Because all of the defensive metrics are all over the place, I’ve never attempted to learn them. And it’s only since last year that I’ve paid attention to offensive ones.

      • smurfy says:

with regard to offensive metrics: since that’s all they got, too many people consider that side the whole game for position players. (Tex, w/o considering defense: you’re not getting the whole picture.)

  7. smurfy says:

Kuroda looks real tricky – they think they got it, and miss or roll over. Just a couple floaters, dangerous.

  8. smurfy says:

CJ Wilson is also looking very good. I think he’s better than the Yanks’ snub, or Texas’. He had strange control problems in the third, but he looks tough to me. He knows Andruw was waiting on a fb, and won’t give it to him.

  9. Phil C says:

5th & 6th innings could be big for the Yanks. They seem to come alive the 3rd time through the batting order.

  10. Phil C says:

Martin’s throwing well tonight. Caught 2 of 3. Off course, the Angles are missing on the hit & run.

  11. smurfy says:

That’s two caught stealing! Kuroda delivers a nice fb, Russell throws the runner out.

  12. Phil C says:

Kuroda sure likes the extra rest.

  13. smurfy says:

Good swing by Russell. Hope he’s warming up.

    • Phil C says:

At least his OBP is 120 higher than his BA.

      • smurfy says:

I have faith in him as a catcher, just hope he can keep that OBP up, and add some pop, so people don’t write him off.

        • Phil C says:

It’s astounding how his BABIP has fallen off a cliff the past 2 years. So much so that it is probably from weak contact rather than bad luck, especially this year.

  14. smurfy says:

Bouncers to third been killing us. CJ must be doing that. He’s got a killer cutter, like Andy.

  15. smurfy says:

Infield’s playing real well. I figure Hiro’s pace, and soft contact is setting them up well.

  16. Phil C says:

Both pitchers are looking real sharp tonight. Both should go deep into the game. Wilson 74 pitches through 5 innings and Oki 64 through 6 innings. Nice going Granderson.

  17. smurfy says:

Love that! Grandy was fighting hard, and got some of that one, a tweener, that Trout gambled and lost: Triple!

  18. smurfy says:

Wow, 2 dp’s starting with a bouncer to 3rd, now two more with a man on third. Whew, nice pitching.

  19. Phil C says:

Well that was disgusting and could come back to haunt them. Runner on 3rd, no outs….and then no runs!

  20. Phil C says:

Smoltz was all over A-Rod on that AB. Said he swung at CJ’s pitch rather than wait for one he could handle.

  21. Phil C says:

    Ugh. That’s probably the game.

  22. smurfy says:

Ouch, that shatters my light mood. We gotta get to Wilson now. (echoes of your prior frustration.) But it’s been a very clean game, let’s win it!

  23. Duh, Innings! says:

Here’s an idea for the Yanks this offseason:

Offer A-Rod and half his remaining salary (includng half the homerun milestone bonus money) to Seattle for Chone Figgins who could share 3B and the #9 slot with Nunez (yes, a total salary dump.) The Yanks could play Figgins enough so his vested 2013 option doesn’t kick in and either re-sign him for a year cheap or let go of him after 2013. They could also cut him whenever in 2013 if he really sucks.

I bet Seattle would take back A-Rod. Who else would they have as a gate draw besides King Felix who only plays once every five games if Ichiro signs elsewhere after this year? What if Ichiro leaves the Ms after this year and King Felix leaves after 2014 or is traded before then if he wants out? Seattle could turn into Montreal Expos II (< 10,000 people a game.)

A-Rod would most likely be the Ms HR and RBI leader for at least the next three years. He'd be their lone gate draw if Ichiro and King Felix leave. He'd be back and could break the homerun record with the team he started with – good for the Mariners and Major League Baseball. Good for the Yankees, too, cuz they'd be rid of him.

A-Rod is a hasbeen who won't come anywhere close to his prime again. He is a 22-25 HR, 75-90 RBI so-so now who will limp into breaking the homerun record if he breaks it.

The Yanks need to get rid of him and the Ms need someone to draw the fans, give them something to see. What better gate draw than the homegrown kid returning to pursue the homerun record? He'd be royalty if the Ms somehow just made it to the World Series with him considering it'd be their first World Series appearance.

    • smurfy says:

I respect Arod more than that sounded, but your plan is clever. I loved what Figgins used to do, and bet he could resurrect in a new environment. But Arod needs to start hitting bombs for it to work. (And some GM’s have to defy convention. Where is old Bill Veeck?

  24. Phil C says:

Figgins .186/.245/.276, 48 wRC+ and -1.4 WAR. Give me A-Rod even in his decline.

  25. smurfy says:

good eye, Swish, now … YES! The sound of that should rally the troops!

  26. Phil C says:

At least Jones advanced the runner. Good tag by Swish.

  27. smurfy says:

Hunter played that textbook, but Swish beat it by a mile.

  28. smurfy says:

damn! Callaspo has time to dance and spin, and still get him. Argh!

  29. smurfy says:

Nixy failed to see the fb down the middle on 2-0, then missed a floaty something in the good zone, then he missed the tough one. Ouch. Critical to have foreseen the predictable fb.

  30. Phil C says:

Unbelievable, 0-8 w/RISP tonight. Good pitching by Wilson, but I can’t believe how bad the Yanks have been w/RISP.

  31. smurfy says:

Trout hit that sweet! Batsound was the prettiest I’ve heard.

  32. Phil C says:

Has Girardi explained why the rotation is Kuroda, Garcia, Nova, Hughes? I would have expected Garcia to be last in that foursome.

  33. Phil C says:

Oki-san sure gave up a lot of runs for a game in which he pitched pretty well. (See smurfy, I’m not to old to learn.)

  34. smurfy says:

Great throw by Russell – thought correctly he got him, even tho it took a YES-Mo to see clearly the teeny space between foot and bag. Boy, woulda called it a tie the first time I saw it in slo-mo, so I can’t blame the ump, he’s human. But, now, since he’s scored,…, seems like the Angels have earned it.

    • Phil C says:

MLBN replay showed the same thing. But I agree with you about the ump.

    • Phil C says:

I don’t get worked up over those plays that are so difficult to see, especially with the naked eye. It’s the ones that are more obvious that upset me when replay (never understood why they call it instant)shows the obvious.

      • smurfy says:

yeah, think I agree that a quick review of every play sb happening upstars, with a radio connection to the crew chief.

  35. smurfy says:

Good for Swish! He’s worked hard out there, and his big catches have been to the line, or in. Big thrill for him, Cheers!

  36. Phil C says:

Nice catch by Swish. I’m sure going to miss him next year.

  37. Michael says:

Downs loooks like hes been gettiong lucky. 19ks in 30 innings? Time to reverse that luck starting with lefty killer Derek Jeetuh

  38. smurfy says:

Alright, Jete! Great timing, too. Leading off the 8th.

  39. Phil C says:

    Downs & Frieri, 56.1 innings, 1 ER,

  40. smurfy says:

wow, I’m surprised Grandy got a walk. He looked helpless against Downs.

  41. Michael says:

A two homer night…starting off a big second half for Tex. Cmonnn Tex! I always like seeing him bat righty too.

  42. smurfy says:

Oh! thought Tex had another, C’mon, Tex!

  43. Michael says:

    TOLD YA!!!!! WHOOOO HOOOOOO

  44. smurfy says:

    WAHOOOOO! Texy you so sexy!

  45. smurfy says:

Robbie with his biggest miss ever. Never saw him finish on a knee before. He smacked it in the end, tho.

  46. Michael says:

    Come onnn one more homer!!

    • smurfy says:

so how’s the phone call wait? (whenever it’s convenient, such as a change of pitchers.)

      • Michael says:

Got out of my second interview last wednesday. Met with the shift manager and everything. I actually think it went very well, better than the first. Theyll let me know within the week if I got it or not. The head nurse was dropping lines like “youll see when you start working here” which I think is a good sign! Waiting anxiously by my phone to join the adult world of real moneymaking!

  47. Phil C says:

Boy does that runner on 3rd an no outs loom large now.

  48. Michael says:

Does Wise have the balls to steal?

  49. Michael says:

Hahaha im on point tonight huh? Iv had to go to the bathroom the entire inning too this is rough. Just hit a nice double and let me go lol

  50. Phil C says:

Michael, use your nursing skills to revive me. I think I passed out after Martin hit that!

  51. smurfy says:

We just gave them a knockout combo! The old one-two.

  52. Phil C says:

Now to hold our breath for three outs.

  53. Phil C says:

    Detroit’s leading the O’s 7-1 in the 9th.

  54. smurfy says:

Phil if you’re not listening to my9, Paul O’Neill told how he used to draw little eyes on his bat. Then, later, if needed, like he hit liners at people, he’d draw glasses on them.

  55. Michael says:

Sure does make you appreciate Mo more doesn’t it? Without him the games just have me on the edge of my seat! I have never known any other closer, sometimes I used to turn the games off and just go to sleep. Not anymore

  56. smurfy says:

Fun at bat with Aybar. Shoulda got one, maybe, that he fouled off because he saw meat! Then the cleverest slider, but he caught enough to pop to the pitcher.

  57. smurfy says:

    Game! Ohhhhhh yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

  58. Phil C says:

    What a game for Martin!

  59. Michael says:

You can tell how excited Martin is! Im happy for him good for him! Get hot and go on a tear. Him and Tex both. Well guys ill talk to you all tomorrow. Same place

  60. Phil C says:

Love them games where they were ahead….and then they weren’t. Should be an 8 game lead.

    • smurfy says:

I say, quit shoulda-ing. Too hard on the stomach. The boys sure didn’t get down about the stranded runner!

  61. Phil C says:

    Chat y’all tomorrow.
