Game 84-Brooms out for Hughes

Road greys surround by red jerseys tonight
Sox are red, violets are blue. Manny, Pedro, Youkilis where are you? I thought no game was over in Fenway park, but that AAA lineup Bobby V fielded this afternoon looked pretty dead out there after falling behind 4-0. What has become of this so-called rivalry? It seems more of a NESN creation than reality at this point. The Sox just aren’t keeping up their end of the bargain. The Yanks are 4-0 facing the Sox this year, have outscored them 37-20 and if you polled a thousand Yankee fans, I have to think the vast majority fear the Rays and Texas far more these days, with the Red Sox all but an afterthought. They look like a team in transition to me, and to make matters worse the always injured Carl Crawford just had yet another setback in his rehab. We can quibble over what makes a player ‘injury prone’ but anyone who gets hurt during rehab fits the definition in my book.
But fear not, oh Red Sox Nation. Phil Hughes has been abysmal in Fenway Park over the course of his career, going 2-3 with an ERA of 9.00 (4 starts 8 appearances) and a 1.913 WHIP. But alas, in such a tiny sample one might expect some noise. Looking at the starts he’s had 2 horrendous outings and 2 pretty good ones. So we will just have to see if Good Phil or Bad Phil shows up tonight. Here’s your lineup, courtesy of Chad Jennings over at LoHud:
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira DH
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher 1B
Andruw Jones LF
Jayson Nix 3B
Russell Martin C
Darnell McDonald RF
Alex gets the 2nd game off, with Tex getting the half day at DH. GO YANKS!

OMG!!! More 1st inning runs.
They’re on an incredible first inning run.
5, 4, and now 3 runs in the 1st inning. They’re regressing. Bench those guys who batted in the 1st.
They scored int he first inning in a couple games in the last series, too, didn’t they?
I’m having to follow the game on GameDay because Fox Sports has decided to broadcast the Ranger game here. That reduces the Yanks win expectancy from 68% to 51.5%
That sucks. Those guys are terrible.
I missed most of that first inning.
Ken Rosenthal’s bow tie is not on straight.
Russell Martin got a hit!! And it’s a double!
Does that mean that he sucks less than Luke Scott? Or that Doubront sucks MORE than Luke Scott?
Maybe he’s breaking out of his Martin.
Sounds like circular sucking to me.
Youkilis is red hot for the White Sox.
Considering the team, shouldn’t he be white hot?
OK with me.
How are the Rangers doing?
Trailing 2-1 after 2 innings. They scored one run on a wild pitch and then Cruz was the 3rd out trying to score on another one,
Remember when they were going to be the greatest team in the history of baseball?
What the heck has happened to A-Gon this year? I know offense is down across baseball, but he should rake in that park.
He has been hot the past couple of weeks. Maybe he’s been trying too hard. Or maybe there’s no one to protect him.
The Yanks are running away with the AL East and have lost Joba, Sabathia, Pettitte, Pineda, Mo and Gardner for varying lengths of time. What would they have done if they stayed healthy? It might be 1998 all over again.
It’s kind of hard to imagine them being better than they’ve been over the last month. But they started 21-21 or something like that. Maybe they would have been 26-16.
Jones makes another great catch. He’s suddenly on fire defensively.
I just gotta say, “Whoooop!”
Andruw still has some game left in that body of his.
A mischievous thought occurs to me, regarding Andruw and that particularly confined space in Fenway. He looks like he’s found a field in which he can excel. Maybe we can work a trade, and they can cut bait on a signing that they regret, looks like he regrets.
No way they pay enough of that contract to make it worthwhile.
maybe Crawford can chip in.
Shane Greene pitching a no-no into the 6th.
See Robbie pushing Gomez, while holding the ball.
had to be snickering
The Sox playing little ball. Oh, the humanity.
I’ll take the DP there.
Way to curve Papi to death, Phil!
Not a great inning for Phil, but he got out of it with minimum damage.
Yeah, I’ve been distracted, so I wait to see how Phil handles this. I did hear several loud reports.
Sweet, Sciriaco! Ahem, considering, of course.
All right, up against the wall, punk!
no,..mo! Sieg .. er, Go Yankees!
great slide, Andruw!
Think of some of the contracts the Sox have. Beckett, Lackey, Crawford, Dice-K. Most of it dead weight.
Doesn’t Lackey owe them a year at league minimum for missing this season?
Something like that. But knowing him, he just will pull a Pavano and not play until he has to in order to get a contract somewhere else.
block o’ metal, dragging across the bottom kinda inheritance
Man, I want some ice cream.
Fly ball pitcher in Fenway. He’s not so bad but the fly balls are all hitting the wall.
Nice play by Nix. Solid!
Hughes’s curve is coming back.
Phil has a great fb, moving it around, but he’s overusing it. His curves are good, but Ross showed his curve to righties can be hit, if you’re good at that. Terrific weapon on lefties, though, that slurvy, faster, angled curve. It’s very similar to Ivan’s and Sori’s slider for them.
He still needs another trick, like the changeup, or something.
Eephus pitch.
yeah, something like that.
Splitter?
Maybe he can use that slurvy pitch to get righties down and away – but, I’m unsure.
yes, treat him tenderly, BoSox, save him for the second half.
oops, this goes as reply to one comment down.
Doubront looking good, but he’s up to 85 pitches. Yankees have to make sure he doesn’t go past 6.
There goes Swisher, showing off again.
That was McDonald’s fault. What the hell was he doing??
CF always has the right of way
I had remarked on his play in the dugout, the pop. But Swish shoulda been there, too, for sure.
Darnell Mcdonald, embedded Red Sox
Darn, Darnell! Don’t mess with Grandy.
better watch him, may be a ruddy agent.
Phil had Punto beat inside. What did he hit it to center on?
Can one look the pitch up on Gameday, Phil C?
Dang, a 10-pitch inning. Doubront will be out for the 7th.
It’s a mojo speedbump. Sciriacco must be warping the weave.
Wow, not playing Yankee baseball tonight
That should be it for Hughes.
Shucks! Sure wish Nixy was playing a half step closer to the line.
I don’t understand Girardi. It was obvious to me that Hughes should be taken out.
strikes me that things were going against us and Phil. But they were not hitting him too hard there, were they?
Hughes hardly did anything wrong. If Jeter makes the play, this inning is over 20 minutes ago with no threat.
True, but he was getting less effective as the game wore on, he wasn’t striking guys out, he’s not the kind of guys who gets double plays, he has a reverse split favoring the hitter, and the game was on the line. He was not going to pitch much longer anyway, so he wasn’t saving the pen. I don’t get it.
The problem with phil is that he goes 0-2 on a batter then he tries to throw a fastball down the middle or misses his spot and he give up a hit, time and time again. Sure the defense let him down but good MLB pitchers pick their teamates up. His is getting like AJ was. It may be time to sell high on him and trade for a ligit pitcher like hamels or Garza
Dubront has an antidote: righties.
Smurfy: According to GD, the last pitch Hughes threw to Punto was a CB.
thanks a lot, Phil. Good to know. Phil shoulda stuck with inside fb’s, as I thought. For Papi, fb was not the choice. I saw GD once, and should use it as a companion, I see.
I always have it on, even when watching the game. Tonight I’m running back & forth watching a movie.
what a multi-tasker. I run on a much slower wavelength.
I have faith in a Yankee comeback.
Martin has come out of his Martin and will get a hit here.
Half a point.
Albers was an easy touch second half last year, but he’s a monster now.
Nice save by Nix. Should not try curves on Cody Ross.
difficult play, but I’d give Nix an error.
Guess it didn’t matter if Hughes stayed in or not. Bullpen not doing the job tonight.
Bleh.
double-bleh. No fun watching when the BoSox got their rally gear on.
Ummm, strike that earlier comment about faith in a come back. What the hell has happened to Wade?
That 26th guy doesn’t help much if he sucks.
Didn’t even pitch long enough to say they saved another reliever for tomorrow.
Did they re-call Nunez?
think he’s still thumb-injured.
The Yanks got two on. Bring the positive vibes.
I just saw 4 errors and thought Nunez was back. Maybe it’s The Ghost of Nunez.
that contagious disease dwells in the old place.
Ciriacco is wierd, he’s disturbing the force tonight.
Can’t get upset at Jones. He given the Yanks 3 HRs today. Come on Raul!! Opps. Two pop outs to catcher? What are the odds?
probably some Nicaraguan pitching trick
They need Joba asap. Less than a month?
Joba looks fit, but he just might need the full month. Unless he somehow sizzles right away.
Nice, DJ! Guess Cody can’t hit curves out of the dirt.
Boy, they’ve pounded down the third base line.
It’s a disgrace to have the same number hits and errors.
wow, that 5 looks ugly.
I don’t remember Aceves pitching 95+ as a Yank?
no, 91, usually.
I wonder where it came from?
Boston pressure?
Nice chin-raiser, Chavey.
Needed more hits than errors in the line score.
glad to see the balance tip. Let’s get…aw, Jete.
Nice going Chavez!
Damn. I hate come from ahead losses.
ha, you’ve still got it!
Boo booz galore. Jete with the weird door-opener. Started the game on base again, tho.
Chat ya tomorrow Smurfy.
see ya , Phil. and Prof.
