Mark Teixeira 1B
Nick Swisher RF

Eric Chavez 3B
Russell Martin C

The Sox are a depleted team right now, missing Pedroia, Middlebrooks, Ellsbury, Crawford, and obviously Youkilis. We’ll miss out on plenty of Red Sox to hate, but if the Yankees can take advantage this weekend, they can create quite a distance in the standings.

The game starts at 7:05 pm EST on YES. Go Yankees!

  1. Phil C says:

Well, the Yankees really need to win 3 of these games.

By the way, Costas & Smoltz are on MLBN.

  2. T.O. Chris says:

I know he has plenty of years left on the deal to turn it around but that Crawford contract looks like one of the worst in baseball history.

    • Professor Longnose says:

It might have been an overpay even if he had been the same player he was in Tampa. His skills don’t age well, and he’s never been a high OBP guy.

      • T.O. Chris says:

It probably would have simply based on Fenway. Not only does their LF largely take away his defensive contributions to the team, but his swing isn’t meant to hit balls over the monster and his price jumped because of the power he showed that last year.

I still would’ve liked to have seen a healthy Crawford roaming LF in Yankee Stadium and hitting into the short porch.

        • Professor Longnose says:

Yes, he might have done better with the Yankees. But can’t say I’m disappointed with how it worked out.

          • T.O. Chris says:

Yeah I agree. We don’t get stuck with a huge contract and they finally do! No if only Gonzalez can tank for the next 6 years!

            • Professor Longnose says:

I expected Gonzalez to continue to be great. I’m shocked at the year he’s having.

              • T.O. Chris says:

I think he’s hurt, I’ve heard mention of a shoulder problem which would make sense.

    • Michael says:

Its only been a year and a half. I cant imagine how a guy that could could fall off that much…good thing though

  3. Professor Longnose says:

All right, nice way to start the game, but if they let Beckett off the hook, it’s going to hurt.

  4. Michael says:

Theres very few things I hate as much as the Red Sox…a sweep would be beautful to kick them while theyre down. I expect they wont be this vulnerable later when Middlebrooks, Pedroia, and Ellsbury return. Oh and uhh Crawford…yeah

  5. Michael says:

    Cano….Grand Slam damnit!!! please #toomanyhomers

  6. smurfy says:

Oh, blow those RISP woes away.

  7. Michael says:

Beckett isnt settled in. Gotta make this count. Come on big inning here get into that bullpen early on this 4 game set.

  8. Professor Longnose says:

    Wow, crowd is booing.

  9. Phil C says:

For some reason Becket is only good in old number years.

    • T.O. Chris says:

Those old number years do me good as well haha, 91 BC, that’s my favorite.

    • Professor Longnose says:

Yeah. I read a funny article once comparing Beckett’s career to the Star Trek movies, only every other one being good.

  10. smurfy says:

I wanted Robbie to blow it ovah the Monsta -

but I’ll settle for dancing on Josh’s grave

  11. T.O. Chris says:

Man I haven’t seen Beckett look this lost in a while.

    • Phil C says:

      I’m really enjoying it.

      • T.O. Chris says:

Yeah I’ve never liked Beckett as a person, he’s always come across as a huge ass. Even with the Marlins I thought he was a douche. I read an article once where he was being interviewed after a game and half way through just blurts out “I have a huge dick”, then looks at a teammate and says “it’s even bigger than his”. Just a weird and douchey thing to say for no reason.

  12. Professor Longnose says:

And Beckett’s lucky Swisher’s line drive was at someone.

  13. T.O. Chris says:

His fastball looks like it has no life on it at all.

  14. Phil C says:

Martin needs to get some hits or they may rename slumps after him.

    • T.O. Chris says:

He must be hurt or something. He’s too talented to be this bad. I have no idea what we’re going to do at C next year, with M.Montero and Yadier locked up, Romine losing a ton of development time, and Martin struggling like this.

      • Michael says:

He WAS too talented to be this bad. Just glad hes doing it in a walk year and the Yankees can resign him on the cheap. But hes caught an ass ton of games in LA when Torre was managing and has had a few concerning injuries

        • T.O. Chris says:

He’s still got the talent I just don’t think his body is holding up well, there’s a difference in losingh ability and not being able to use it because your body is breaking down. The hip injury is what concered me the most in LA, but with us it seems to be the back that’s going out.

          • Michael says:

The body is all connected. Losing the talent body breaking down, whatever it is he is totally falling off. Backup catcher at the moment. Defensively, offensively hes just not the same

            • T.O. Chris says:

Yeah he’s falling off I just don’t think it’s fair to say he isn’t talented anymore. If he could repeat last year on offense and defense I’d take that from a catcher every year. Power and above average defense behind the plate isn’t easy to find.

              • Michael says:

I agree but the way his body is breaking down I doubt he will ever be healthy enough to provide that. Hes not young at 30, hes old at 30

              • T.O. Chris says:

Hard to argue with that no doubt. I just really don’t want Romine or Cervelli starting from the start of the year next season.

  15. T.O. Chris says:

    Luke Scott’s like 0-39.

    • Professor Longnose says:

      I wonder what the record is for a non-pitcher. I think for a pitcher it’s 0 for 70 over a full season.

      • T.O. Chris says:

That’s a good question, no way a manager would let a regular player go 0-70 haha. You’d have to be sent down or cut before that.

As a pitcher even you’d be upset with something like that.

  16. Professor Longnose says:

Fabulous. Wasted no RISP, and put up a big number.

  17. Phil C says:

Damn, this team really needs HRs to score runs.

  18. Michael says:

Arite come on lets not turn this into a barn burner here. I want a nice relaxing easy win over the Sawwxx

  19. T.O. Chris says:

Kuroda may bne one of the best in ERA but his FIP suggests he is nowhere near one of the best pitchers in baseball.

  20. Michael says:

Martin’s defense hasnt exactly been steller this year either

    • T.O. Chris says:

I’d still bring him back on another 1 year deal, he’s played his way out of a big multi year deal from someone else I think.

      • Professor Longnose says:

Yeah, I would take a flyer on him, if his bad half year has brought the price down to reasonable. But then, a lot of clubs would, too, which might bring the price back up a bit.

        • T.O. Chris says:

Yeah but if he’s getting a bunch of 1 and 2 year deals he stay based on loyalty. He’s already taken less money to come here once.

          • Professor Longnose says:

            That would be good.

            • Michael says:

He only deseves 1 or 2 year deals based on performance. I would not give him 8 million either. He turned down a 3 year deal for 8 million per at the start of the season. Sorry bud thats the risk you took. You gambled and lost.

            • T.O. Chris says:

I’d certainly rather have Martin back than combo Romine and Cervelli.

              • Michael says:

Not if it means 10 million a year for 2 or more years. Id rather Pierzinsky

              • T.O. Chris says:

I doubt anyones giving him that kind of money unless he has a killer second half, at which point he’d have earned it. He only got 5 million for 1 year when he came here.

  21. T.O. Chris says:

I haven’t seen Lackey’s phiranna face in a while haha, keep it off TV please YES.

  22. Phil C says:

Damn this game got ugly fast.

  23. Michael says:

Christ I hate ortiz. What a shit head. Ban everyone who has ever done PEDs on a first time offense huh? Yeah that was all good when the Red Sox docs were leading the investigation but when you get busted years later you say it was Dominican Milk Shakes? Jerkoff

    • T.O. Chris says:

Well what he was saying was lifetime ban going forward, not for stuff they find out from the past. He basically said we know what we know now and now we’re testing, so starting now no tolerance.

Ortiz was technically never caught, he was just linked to the same list Alex was on from before there was testing.

      • Michael says:

Yeah he is as innocent as ARod, and Rocket, and Bonds, and Biggio, and the list goes on.

I dont care about players doing roids. Its the era of baseball I grew up in but I do believe enough players were doing them that it was all evened out. Dont go pointing fingers when your doing the same shit though.

        • T.O. Chris says:

Biggio? When was little Biggio linked to steroids? If you mean Bagwell he’s never even been linked to steroids, they just won’t let him in the hall because he was friends and teammates wiith Caminetti. In fact Bagwell’s career arch shows nothing suspicous at all.

          • Michael says:

Bagwell I meant. And if you include minor leauges when he all of a sudden beefed up to Herculean levels compared to what he was before I mean no not officially but hey not many guys have been officially caught. Its all circumstantial.

            • T.O. Chris says:

I just don’t run around pointing fingers. I personally encourage steroid use in all sports, I think team doctors should be the one injecting and getting them so they get clean stuff. I think in another 50-100 years we’ll all be doing some kind of steroid just to make us better than weak, normal, human beings. But as it stands now accusing someone of steroids is a career killer and that’s not fair. To keep Bagwell out of the hall is ridiculous on a level that it makes the whole hall a joke. Clearly keeping players of color out of the game inflated white players numbers for years, but we don’t ban marginal white HOFers who played before the barrier was broken.

  24. smurfy says:

Holy Babe Ruth! A brand new game, and we need to beat them again, and I thought that was just wunnerful…

  25. Phil C says:

    Over/Under: Game time 4hrs 30 mins. I guess I’ll go over.

  26. T.O. Chris says:

I love having Chavez on the bench. He can still pick it with the best of them and he fits our team need perfectly.

    • Michael says:

And he knows and relishes his role as a “backup” 3rd baseman. Hes more like a caddy than a backup. I would like them to use him more often to be honest. A lot more

      • Phil C says:

Can’t use him too much. Too prone to injury.

      • T.O. Chris says:

I wouldn’t say that, he’s too injury prone to run out their everyday. Getting plenty of rests between outings is perfect for him at this stage, you’ll wear him down and break him otherwise.

        • Michael says:

I think its important to use Chavez more mainly to save ARod’s legs which is where he draws his power. Especially since the Yankees will need those legs…for 6 more years…wow

          • T.O. Chris says:

Alex hits worse at DH than he does 3B and he’s good at it, no reason to break down Chavez while also getting less production from Alex.

            • Michael says:

Well hes going to have to learn how to hit better at DH. I cant imagine the Yankees will still be fielding a 40, 41, and 42 year old ARod in the hot corner

              • T.O. Chris says:

All players tend to hit worse at DH, they’ve done some pretty extensive studies on it to prove the majority of players who collect DH ABs have worse numbers than when they are in the field.

I honestly don’t care about Alex at 40, 41, 42, he’s probably going to be bad no matter what at that point. I’d be happy if he just does well until that point, I’d like to see the power surge up in the second half though.

  27. Professor Longnose says:

    I’m not handling this.

  28. Duh, Innnings says:

Kuroda is not a true #2 starter.

‘Way to erase the lead, chokeartist.

  29. Duh, Innnings says:

‘Know what annoys me the most about the Red Sox?

The Red Sox are in the Yanks’ heads every #@$%ing year including ones where the Red Sox are 77-84 win slop like this one.

Tonight is a perfect example. 5-0 lead erased the next inning cuz the Yanks crap their pants with Kuroda being the lead crapper.

I discount his last three starts for this stunt he pulled (which it is.)

  30. Professor Longnose says:

RBI for Rodriguez. We need more of those.

  31. smurfy says:

    Cano, short for Cannon

  32. smurfy says:

    aw, the song is over?

    I wanted to keep dancing

  33. Michael says:

Oh and TOChris…i still am a bit peeved at you for allowed me to get my hopes up about the Montero trade. I was all negative about it immediately after and then you were so ecstatic about the trade I started coming around to the idea. Got my hopes up, I pictured a right handed 23 year old CC Sabathia. Jose Campos would develop into one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. The Yankees need a findamental rethinking about how they evaluate/develop pitching

    • T.O. Chris says:

So you are one of the people who have already decided what that trade will be huh? We’ve already lost the deal despite the fact that Montero has an OPS under .660?

The panic over Campos is ridiculous, it’s an elbow, all pitchers have elbow pain. Most now almost have to have TJ before they make it to the majors as a right of passage it seems. Pineda’s is more worrying but his rotator cuff wasn’t touched which is the career killer, as long as he rehabs hard and stays in shape before he can start rehabbing he’ll be fine. I’m tired of sayingh this but Schilling had the exact same surgery early on in his career and actually came back throwing harder.

      • smurfy says:

I loved the trade, too, and you’re right about the pitching values we gained. Montero is like Posada, too, in that he hits only when he’s trying to catch.

      • Michael says:

Its not over for a while but its not looking good. Shoulder injuries are much more worrisome than elbow injuries. While Montero is struggling, you could also say hes learning how to play in the bigs. Pineda and Campos are losing development time. Just sets the clock back for potential payoff for that trade and its god damn frustrating. Its been what over 40 years since the Yankees ever had a young Ace that they developed?

        • smurfy says:

yeah, that’s all unfortunate, and negative post-trade, so we can’t be happy with it. Breaks, though, cannot be definitively anticipated, except maybe with the close observance of knowing what the pitcher’s trying to do, and hearing of some arm complaints.

          • Michael says:

Just seems so much worse given that the Yankees pitching depth is being tested and Pineda is nursing a shoulder injury which who knows if he will ever be the same again. Also the Yankees have a black hole at catcher offensively and Montero would have been able to help there too.

            • smurfy says:

but that was the big flaw, the reason they had to exchange him. Sold after a perfect setup September, the best they could hope for. The value of a defensive catcher/blocker/leader makes the offensive value pale in importance.

              • Michael says:

The Yankees do not seem to agree with you about defense being more important than offense at catcher. Every single catcher they sign or draft seem to be offensive guys who may not stick at the position. In fact how many catchers were more valuable than Jorge during his days? I dont think many.

              • Michael says:

Or did you mean Montero specifically? I havent seen him behind the plate I dont know how he is

              • smurfy says:

Yeah, I meant Jesus, specifically. The catcher has to cope with every pitch, maybe 160? every game. Extra duty, when you consider the throwout task and the plate-blocking task, not to mention dealing with pitchers under stress.

I dunno about recruiting, guess young defensive catchers probably a) don’t often hit and b) get injured before they get to pro ball. Have to develop position players/hitters into catchers.

  34. smurfy says:

I definitely would love to see Hiro right the ship. Don’t eagerly anticipate DJ’s work under pressure, BIG pressure.

  35. Phil C says:

    Damn, Beckett suddenly looks sharp.

  36. Michael says:

Martin has to be wondering if hes ever going to break free. Feel bad for the guy

  37. smurfy says:

Russell was a speck early, trying to time that wicked 2 strike curve.

  38. Michael says:

    Nice play Cano

  39. smurfy says:

Wow! Two games in a row, even if this one wasn’t as hard as Wednesday’s catch, or as vital.

  40. smurfy says:

boy, that’s the cruelest pitch, the two seamer inside, for the (Ruddy, ha) batter to foul off his tender person.

  41. Michael says:

I mean a lot of people talk about what a hitters park the new Yankee stadium is but Fenway has the dimensions of a little league park. It plays up to right and left hand hitters. Theres almost no such thing as a foul ball for lefties or righties.

    • smurfy says:

isn’t the layout (excepting foul ground) pretty close, with a flip of left for right? (plus a well in center, and no lf alley)

  42. smurfy says:

Don’t know how it’s gonna go, but this has been double exciting thus far. Interesting, if not satisfying, yet.

    • Michael says:

Be nice if ARod can turn the power in the second half. And Tex. Really relying on these guys for years to come so lets pick it up

  43. smurfy says:

Arod, can’t touch him. He’s blessed, or something.

  44. Professor Longnose says:

    RISP! Let’s turn it on.

  45. Michael says:

Oh man I fell asleep…oh hes still pitching to Swisher huh? Didn’t miss anything did I

  46. Professor Longnose says:

    Stolen bases. Nice.

  47. Michael says:

    Barrel the catcher over please

  48. Michael says:

He blocked the plate you knock him out.

  49. smurfy says:

Man, Raul’s sounded so good. Damn, those three would have been nice.

With a $120 million hip, you probably don’t want to do a football play.

  50. Professor Longnose says:

I can’t believe Kuroda stayed in this game long enough to lose it. What was the point?

  51. smurfy says:

Shit, the disappointment, with the fielder fumbling and reaching for it. Ouch, great liner, too.

    • Phil C says:

Throwing off balance, I can’t believe he got the ball to anywhere near 2nd base.

      • smurfy says:

I saw him looking toward second as he grabbed the ball, so he had a good target, and it’s a pretty short throw. (? from 280′ or so to 90′ so maybe 170′, still that was accurate – a key to playing that position.)

  52. Phil C says:

There will be Yankee runs scored this inning!

  53. Michael says:

Damnit Beckett!! We cant have this guy pitching friday night games. Im trying to head out and hes taking over a minute in between pitches. Now this is where were at

  54. Professor Longnose says:

I’m irrationally upset. I can’t even enjoy that triple.

  55. smurfy says:

Hey, hey, Tex! And a triple!

  56. Phil C says:

Is that 3/4 of a Tex message?

  57. smurfy says:

    Boy, that perfects the triple!

  58. Phil C says:

Gonna see a whole lot of relievers tonight.

  59. Professor Longnose says:

    Dammit, Swisher, stop overswinging!

    • smurfy says:

He, supported by Kevin Long, considers that his “A” swing, his object to match it with a fat pitch. Wish he could switch to “B” when the situation calls.

  60. smurfy says:

Maybe tonite’s frustrations will be washed away by solid risp performance from now on.

  61. Professor Longnose says:

Feel a little better now, but I refuse to be happy unless Martin gets a hit, too.

  62. Phil C says:

Damn, doesn’t anyone know the meaning of a shut down inning and how to execute it.

  63. Phil C says:

Every year Logan seems to go through a stretch where we have to pinch our noses shut.

  64. Professor Longnose says:

    I can’t take this.

  65. Phil C says:

Once again Jeter makes a great “heads up” play.

  66. smurfy says:

What are they talking about range? Beautiful save and play by the Jeter!

  67. Professor Longnose says:

Yeah, that was a really good play by Jeter. There were a bunch of ways to screw it up and he didn’t.

    • Phil C says:

Jeter’s never been the best fielding & range SS, but he always makes the smart play.

      • Professor Longnose says:

He still gets a pass for the 2001 shovel play. Greatest thing I ever saw on a baseball field.

        • smurfy says:

amen. And here, I’d say the smarts are displayed as “cool under fire” as he managed the fade-by throw as his momentum was oblique (?) to the base.

  68. Professor Longnose says:

    PHEW!!

The WE chart on this game will be interesting.

  69. Phil C says:

Wow. That A-Rod is some singles machine.

  70. Professor Longnose says:

    Robertson looking good.

  71. smurfy says:

Interesting: Joe is showing David that avoiding a walk is really important.

  72. smurfy says:

    Fenway moths are out.

  73. Professor Longnose says:

    They’re trying to kill me.

  74. Phil C says:

I’d love to see some All State runs in honor of the All Star game.

  75. Professor Longnose says:

That must have been Swisher’s C swing.

  76. smurfy says:

Those are fast moths, or is it a bug convocation?

  77. Phil C says:

That’s interesting, Wise in for Swish.

  78. Professor Longnose says:

Soriano did it quickly. Good. I don’t know if I could have survived a rally.

    Ciao, all.

  79. Phil C says:

I love come from behind wins. But then again I love wins when the lead from the 1st inning on.

  80. smurfy says:

Ahhh, to relax in comfort! For this night, we showed ‘em.

  81. Phil C says:

    Chat y’all tomorrow.

  82. Solid W right there…looks like a missed a great chat. Hope to join you guys and gays next time!
