Game 80: Beat TB!
Sure – the title may be a bit more appropriate were this 1946 and a blog dedicated to the hot new antibiotic streptomycin … but it seems at least mildly relevant here. The Yankees are 4-6 against the Rays this year, including 0-4 at the Trop, and it often seems as if the hideous dome may well be the team’s kryptonite. If the Yankees hope to maintain their hold on the AL East, ‘Beat TB!’ must become an actualized battle cry. Here’s hoping…
Onto the lineups:
| New York Yankees | Tampa Bay Rays |
| Derek Jeter, SS | Desmond Jennings, LF |
| Curtis Granderson, CF | Carlos Pena, 1B |
| Alex Rodriguez, 3B | B.J. Upton, CF |
| Robinson Cano, 2B | Jeff Keppinger, 3B |
| Nick Swisher, RF | Ben Zobrist, RF |
| Raul Ibanez, DH | Luke Scott, DH |
| Eric Chavez, 1B | Jose Molina, C |
| Russell Martin, C | Sean Rodriguez, 2B |
| Dewayne Wise, LF | Elliot Johnson, SS |
| Ivan Nova, SP | James Shields, SP |
The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., on the YES Network and MLB Network. Let’s go Yankees!

Man, that is the way to lead off the game! Jeter, Jeter, you did it again, so sweet! And Grandy, you blew it by the second best fielding first baseman in the league (I guess).
Arod just missed his pitch, but Robbie blew another by Pens, faster than he could cope, a couple feet to his right. 2 – 0.
More, please.
Aw, two is our limit, a deep fly and a dumb bunny scampering towards third.
Nice how they picked on Pena that inning. But Cano, terrible, unforgivable to forget how many outs.
Yeah, Pena’s got a hole in his glove, or what? I could forgive Robbie, but would be sure to fill his ear about it, eventually.
Martin had no help from Nova on that SB.
Yeah, great throw, almost. The YES guys figured Jennings saw the curve sign, green light.
Damn that ump! Nova struck out Pena on 1 – 2, and the ump spat on a beautiful curve into the down/in corner.
Oh, and Jennings also looks good as a leadoff man. Nova hasn’t let him and his stealing ways throw him off, though.
Ivan looks muy tough. Afraid hitting Jennings, then the steal right away might shake him up. Not bulldog.
He has incredible mound presence….or something like that.
looks like a vulture, pre-delivery. That’s determination.
Good shut down inning by Nova. Or is it Novey?
Ivanny
Russell rolled over that one, made-to-order. Why didn’t he swing to hit it up the middle?
Nova’s feelin’ good, hiding a smirk after the groundout. Must have the sinking thing going. Goood.
So rare to see a ballboy play like that stab.
You know things are bad when the best fielder on your team is the ball boy.
ha-har.
The ballboy’s play was the only loud hit. Fine #2.
I’d love to see Nova cruise through 8 or 9 innings.
bullpen thinks that’s an excellent idea.
Suddenly Wise is the hottest hitter on the team, except for maybe Cano.
he really smashed that one.
And it’s great to see an also-ran run some.
If Gardner ever makes it back, Wise’s time with the Yanks is probably over. He needs to start impressing some other clubs.
Dewayney?
Nooo, silly. Wisey!
Arod juust under the identical pitch to 1st time up.
Very nice hitting by Elliot.
Another great jump.
Hey, guys. Jumping out to another lead, but it hardly seems safe.
howdy, Professori.
Martin is not having a great year defensively.
I simply cannot believe he dropped that.
tough chance, super short hop, no time to grasp it securely.
picking on Pena, again. Nice idea, changeup.
Damn, threw him out, then lost it.
Damn, damn, damn
Damn.
damn it to hell, we got this.
shame Raully’s boats move too slow, coulda had three. Course, another speck of distance, and it coulda been four.
oh, yeah, oh, yeah. Chavey!
Nice base running too.
that was my second oh, yeah. Guess I shoulda added one for the score.
If they show Ibanez running in slow motion, could you detect movement?
if they use YES-Mo, he might run backwards.
didn’t say it would be easy.
Robbie played that overspin bouncer smartly, and cooly.
WOW! Nova really lost it fast these past 2 innings. These is horrible for the ‘pen. They’re going to have to pitch multiple innings tonight and tomorrow afternoon.
I reckon Ivan was tired by the former inning, and he will recover, maybe. His breaking ball to Pena was not sharp as it had been, for sure.
Bullpen beware, indeed.
Way to lead off the inning, Wisey.
I understood Alex rolling over that one, clearly a changeup, and was doing all he could for contact, having jumped early. Maybe thast happened to Martin, earlier, but he looked balanced.
They really need to move A-Rody down in the batting order. He no longer can be counted on to drive in runs in numbers to warrant batting 3rd & 4th.
I concur, till he gets hot.
Ouch, Ivan got those 1st two outs quickly, then 2 strikes, nice, then, shit!
Me thinks the Yanks should hire a hypnotist to convince them they are playing somewhere other than at the Trop. By the way, I can hardly believe that are 2 professional baseball stadiums named after an orange juice.
ho and oh
Way to go, Robbie. C’mon Nick. Time is NOW.
hasty, hasty!
Ken Singleton and Flash wanted them to start Cano on the 3-1 that Raully hit. Woulda been a good move.
Wasn’t. Even. Close.
Take that back, he’s safe on replay. Nice slide by Cano, bad call by the ump.
yeah, he was out by a mile, except for that clever reach-in.
I like aggressive, but what in God’s name was Thompson thinking?
the ball bumped up against the cutin wall, the fielder was delayed, it tempted Thomson to throw the switch.
i meant cut-in wall, jag in the stands
My rough way of looking at things is that if it takes a perfect throw(s) to get the runner, then it’s a good send. However, S-Rod’s throw was off line and it was still ahead of Cano. But the play was much closer on replay than I though it was when I saw it & posted.
no doubt it was a mistake. He was out to dry.
Sean Rodriguez is having a very good night in a long rutty year. Somebody referred to him as one of the worst hitters in the league. I think the guy is good, he’ll get it back.
He’s batting 33 points higher than Martin. I didn’t expect him to hit .250, but .184 before that AB?
rutty
Nova wasn’t at his best tonight, but a brain fart and fielding really hurt him.
I’m glad I missed most of this game. It sounds awful.
Frustrating! VERY frustrating.
great game, except for the disappointment.
Where’d you go?
Hey Professor. Did your MiL have the by-pass? How’s she doing?
I was at the hospital, and then running errands. The MiL is doing well. She may come home in a couple of days. It will take a while to recover from the surgery, but she should be back to normal in a month or so. We’ll see how much heart function she’ll recover. Thanks for asking.
I wouldn’t be surprised in Yankee relievers faced, on average, the fewest batters per reliever.
when we play Texas (esp in September), it’s worse.
OMG! It just dawned on me, they moved Houston to the AL so the AL could be the juice circuit.
Insidious.
Does Russell Martin officially suck yet?
nah, neither does Tex. Chaddie, I don’t know.
Thank you Russell Martin.
Help me out here guys. It’s artificial turf, and it’s a domed stadium. So when the ball hits the turf, what is that stuff that sprays up?
talcum powder, I guess. Think they replaced the “grass,” and that was an underlayment added. It’s spooky, tho. Looks like the ball is splashing.
After this series, the Yanks better take my frustration out on the Sox or I’ll really be pissed.
they oughta rally to get this. Tomorrow looks like an uphill battle. I hope they can batter the RedSox, but this game has tides, and I fear it’s going out.
I tend to bitch about the individual games. But even if they lose tomorrow I’m far, far, far from panicking.
I’m going to pack it in. I’ll talk to you guys tomorrow, after the Yankees’ stunning 9th inning comeback.
ha, yeah, we’ll tell you about it.
One good thing about Martin’s play this year, the Yanks should save some money if they want to re-sign him and will only have to go one year.
you gotta point. Bet he wishes he had taken that 3 fer 20 deal.
WOW! Oswalt, 4.2 innings, 13 hits, 11 runs, 9 earned. And coming into the game batters were close to .400 against him.
good news
Sir Rodney looks “good.”
Come on, Russell.
I loved hearing Sweet Lou, “That ball had teeth in it.”
yeah, that was good. Hey – how’d you hear Lou? You on YES tonight?
shmush! The Rays stepped on my po’ li’l Yankee heart.
Oh well. Chat y’all tomorrow. Have a Happy Fourth.
may it be explosive tomorrow. Hasta la escriber.
