Game 59-Meet the Mets, sweep the Mets

The stare
Andy Pettitte goes for the coup de grace this afternoon, with the Mets reeling (lost 5 of 6) and the Yanks rolling (won 7 of 9). A Yankee win and a Rays loss (@Miami-Shields vs Sanchez) will give Yanks sole possession of 1st place for the first time this season.
Andy is 8-5 with a 3.69 ERA in 19 games facing the Mets, and his career dates back to the first interleague series of the crosstown rivals. Derek Jeter is the only other active Yankee player (Mo’s on the DL) who played in that first series back in 1997.
Here’s your lineup courtesy of Chad over at LoHud:
Derek Jeter DH
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Andruw Jones LF
Russell Martin C
Jayson Nix SS
Derek gets the half day off at DH, with Nix getting the start at SS. Other than that your standard lineup facing a lefty.
GO YANKS!!!!!

Bay gave me a scare there, but Andy used only 7 to get ‘em out. Our left fielders have done adequately out there.
We need a double-sweep to get to first today.
Am I losing my mind? Was there not a different game thread up that just disappeared? Professor are you there?
well, I dunno. Were you two waxing brilliant on the prior one?
No, but Pettitte was pitching better in the other game thread.
11 pitch inning by Niese, what happened to getting deep into counts?
the games have been under 3 hours recently. Shhh!
Fudge, he got a real grounder, but nicely aimed, for a grounder. Bay’s hit was a slider/cutter, into the middle at the knees. Didn’t see Hairston’s pitch.
Very strange.
who is? what?
That the original game thread disappeared and a new one appeared without our comments.
Ugh. They’re going to have to hit their way to a win today.
some double-sweep anti-mojo!
The Mets really should have scored 3 runs on that play.
Damn, a 36 pitch inning!Ugh!
The evil ones are leading in the cannibalistic game.
the nats are chewing the Red Sox? no, no
the (Devil) rays are eating the marlins?
I give, who?
Fish eat fish! (If Rays are fish that is.)
that’s not fair: fish eat fish, and they don’t go to hell for it. They just get eaten by bigger fish.
Eat fish, avoid hell!
They gotta cash in on situations like this: two on, no one out, y ou should score.
Stupid, stupid, stupid!
WHAAAAAT? Is Swisher crazy?
Damn, 0 for 3 w/RISP. They were 4-11 in last 2 games, I was hoping that was signs of a change.
Coney proves that you join the YES team and become anti-prophetic.
3 innings 41 pitches for Niese, that’s terrible patience by Yankee hitters. I think Jeter needs a full day off.
Maybe this game will be like in many of the Yankees Championship years. Nothing for 5 or 6 innings and then they explode.
was it like that in ’09? Cannot recall.
And back during the 96-00 run.
I hope Andy can come back for the 7th after that catch. Ouch!!
Alright, Curtis, nice execution. – yeah, ouch and numbness, but he pitched pretty well. Unless something swells…
Some heads should be swelling from being banged together for the way they’re hitting w/RISP.
there ought to be a little whipping room, just down from the dugout.
Yeah it’ll keep the pitcher’s arm loose.
good for the timing feel, too: can’t jerk a cat o’ nine. Takes smooth expression for optimal results. – Hey, nice bounce off the top o’ the wall, Russell.
He gets a free pass for next week.
Goes to show how good a manager I’d be. I would have had him catch Sabatthia and used Stewart today for a day after night game.
hunh
2 on, 0 outs once again = 0 runs!
Swish’s bunt was induced by anxiety, strongly encouraged by the scrutiny – nice execution, Cano – here and everywhere amedia. Have a solution to the attitude/psychology/approach? Then it seems to be unhelpful harping.
Not being a professional hitter, I admit that I really couldn’t come up with an approach or answer. I’m certain that this has gotten into their heads. They are not taking pitches like they used to and I don’t know it that’s a symptom of the problem or a cause.
I admit that I’m harping, but it’s not unhelpful unless they are reading this blog. Which I highly doubt. I am practicing by constitutional right to harp. (Please, none of this is written in anger at your comments.)
An innocent drop in the ocean, a part of the amorphous media, not making the news, just – nice singles, boys!
Now 3 GIDP! Swish didn’t take any pitches! Hey Nick, what did you do with the real Nick Swisher?
What’s the Yanks record trailing entering the eight inning?
let’s see, 24-2, 22!
Whadda double!
And even better follow up singles. I love a come back win!
And balls disappear into the Bermuda triangle.
hohoho, Phil C! Not an explosion, but all our mojo at once, for sure.
Suddenly, they’re 3-8 w/RISP. I will admit that Giradi is a better manager than me. But only slightly! lol
you pay too much attention to numbers, try it barebow.
Those were strong hits, too. That musta been stray babip, you know, the lucky kind.
Now Smurfy, can you also mojo a Marlins and Phillies comeback?
I dunno, the Marlins would need something Latin. The Orioles, guess I could try whistling.
Colonel Bogey March?
Let’s go Soriano.
Probably ought to have Grandy play the no-doubles way.
Oh, we gonna have to earn it.
Let’s just get out of this tied!
Nice play, NIX!
Great play, but I think he was safe at 3rd.
the replay showed me batting glove fingers in air when tag applied.
TBS did not have that replay. Great call by Giradi and execution by Nix and A-Rod.
wow, what a shock! Soriano lifted?!??
Man, Russell just took a big punch.
Great K , but Nieuwenheis scares me.
Nice pitching Booney! Now, how about a walk off win?
whew! Time to pinch hit with Mjr. Mojo.
TB won. And Lee is still winless.
no shit.
the double-sweep, but I realize I had the wrong team, and we’re still a half-game out.
Hey, Joe surprised me. Did he you?
How do you mean?
taking out Soriano.
Not really. Girardi’s really been playing the percentages and Soriano just didn’t have it today.
Once your closer loses the lead, there’s nothing wrong with pulling him and going back to matchups. Without looking it up, I would bet Murphy and Neiwenheis have big platoon splits.
Woo! Russell gets another week of mercy!
FIRST WALK OFF OF THE YEAR!!
hunh, all things change: no pie.
Enjoyed chatting with you Smurfy. Chat you in the ATL!
Okedoke, chat then. Have a good trip.
