This afternoon, Andy Pettitte takes on the Indians and Ubaldo Jimenez. The Yankees are looking for their 5th straight win and a three game sweep behind strong pitching efforts from Hiroki Kuroda and Phil Hughes. Not only has the pitching rebounded, but the hitters appear to have their RISP trouble in the past. Russell Martin will return from his stiff lower back, Jayson Nix gets a start at shortstop, Eric Chavez at first base, and Mark Teixeira at DH. With Jeter out, here is today’s lineup courtesy of Chad Jennings.

Curtis Granderson CF
Nick Swisher RF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Mark Teixeira DH
Raul Ibanez LF
Eric Chavez 1B
Russell Martin C
Jayson Nix SS

The game starts at 1:05 PM EST on YES and the MLB Network. Enjoy.

The big news before today’s game is the loss of CC Sabathia to the disabled list with a strained groin. Word is that Cashman might call up Adam Warren, who’s certainly rebounded after a rough start to the season. Freddy Garcia will most likely start in Sabathia’s place Friday, but that might not last long if Warren is added to the 40-man roster.

  1. Michael says:

Ehh I would just be more comfortable with a true backup infielder.

  2. Phil C says:

I’m surprised it’s Warren rather than Phelps. I guess Phelps is still at extended ST. Or did he get hurt?

    • Michael says:

They’re still stretching him out down in High A. Last I saw he was up to 40-50 pitches. Warren has rebounded after a rough start to throw very well in AAA. Phelps, Warren and Mitchell are three guys on other teams that would have already been contending for rotation spots. Yankees minor league teams are filled with more talent than they have been in my entire life

  3. Michael says:

The Yankees have a plethora of pitching in the minors. They really do believe in building up the middle. Lots of catchers, center fielders and pitchers.

  4. Phil C says:

There must be something in the Coors out in Colorado. First a 4 man rotation with a 75 pitch limit, now co-pitching coaches. Can they both go to the mound for a visit? I’d love to see that happen and a fight break out over what to say to the pitcher.

    • Michael says:

The 4 man rotation is interesting although its done out of necessity not ingenuity. Co pitching coaches now? Woww they need help. And if I am the Yankees I would be very glad to send them some pitching help for CarGo

      • Phil C says:

He’d look great in Yankee pinstripes, and the bleacher creatures would love him for all the free balls.

        • Michael says:

Hes locked up for years, hes young and talented, can play anywhere in the outfield with plus defense and he would allow the Yankees to not pay a 33 year old outfielder close to or over 20 million per year for the next 5 -7 years too.

  5. Professor Longnose says:

The Yankees are losing! The Yankees are losing!

    • Michael says:

Ubaldo is throwing well you can see the talent. But at the same time im not worried. Yankees have their B team on the field basically

      • Professor Longnose says:

Ubaldo has been terrible, whatever his talent. They better hit him.

        • Michael says:

Hes been good his last 4 starts with an ERA around 2.20 He is like their Phil Hughes but watch him. The guy seems on today unfortunately. Home run time?

  6. Phil C says:

What do A-Rod & Cano have against Chavez?

    • Michael says:

Haha well they gotta let the guy run around a bit. He doesn’t get to play first much so why not make him work a bit right?

  7. Phil C says:

They’re getting better swings the 2nd time up. They’ll pummel him on their 3rd ABs

    • Michael says:

Hope so. You can see why Ubaldo had that amazing year and a half run. WHat do you guys like better the night games or the day games?

      • Phil C says:

Night games. There’s just something about a game with darkness surrounding the stadium. Plus, if the Yanks lose I’m only miserable for a short period of time before bed.

        • Michael says:

Good point lol. That said if I have the day off which unfortunately I have a lot of these days, day games are great. I get to work the bbq and drink my johnny walker while watching the games. Probably why my posts get more and more inchoerent as the game goes on lol

      • Professor Longnose says:

I prefer night games just because there’s less chance I’ll miss it because I have something else to do.

    • Professor Longnose says:

Good. I’m in the mood for a pummeling.

  8. Michael says:

Chavez the best backup corner infielder in baseball. Worth every penny

  9. Professor Longnose says:

    Of all sweet words
    I hear or read
    The sweetest are these,
    “The Yankees take the lead!”

  10. Michael says:

Ohhh boy. No such thing as too much pitching. Get Garcia ready. Call Warren up. Take no chances. We need Andy for the long haul this year

  11. Professor Longnose says:

    Damn damn damn damn damn

  12. Phil C says:

It’s situations like these that you wonder why the Yanks are playing this game short one pitcher.

    • Michael says:

Let Garcia come in. he is only going to throw 50-60 pitches anyway and thats how much it would probably take for him to get through the game. Why burn out the rest of the bullpen?

      • Phil C says:

I don’t understand this move either. This way they could have a tired pen going into the CWS series, plus having a starter who will be lucky to give you 5 innings.

      • Professor Longnose says:

Yeah, he’s supposed to be the long man and he’s been pitching well.

  13. Michael says:

Really stupid to not go to Garcia. Garcia isnt important. He will not be with the team next year. Warren will be. Let him come up and see what you have, if he throws well then he can be used as a piece of a trade to help out the team. I am always in favor of going with a kid whose pitched very well for a couple years in AAA over a old veteran at the end of his career signed to a one year deal with no potential value to the team.

  14. Phil C says:

WHAT????? Now Rapada!! At this rate they’ll be out of pitchers by the 7th inning.

  15. Professor Longnose says:

    Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer OUT!

  16. Michael says:

Okay good. This is actually smart if he puts Garcia in. One of the knocks about sending Garcia to the pen was he supposedly takes a while to warm up. Hes probably mixing and matching for an inning then hes going to ride Garcia to the end of the game

    • Phil C says:

He would have had as long as he needed to warm up. But I get your point.

      • Michael says:

True I forgot that. Well…now we can all see what we have known all year. garcia has a real tough time putting hitters away (when I talk shit about Yankee backups they seem to do well)

  17. Phil C says:

These next 2 innings are critical for the Yanks. They need plenty of runs because I doubt the pen will blank Cleveland the rest of the way.

    • Michael says:

With a 4 game set coming up and no days off in the next 17 games I would let Garcia finish the game especially considering the team may be without 2 of its top 3 starters. I would tell Garcia your going to go to 40-60 pitches and wherever that takes you in the game thats where it takes us. Make em count take one for the team

      • Phil C says:

I agree, except if the Yanks have a lead of 3 or less runs in the 8th or 9th, you have to try and win this game. If behind, rest the pen.

        • Michael says:

Yup in a save situation I would absolutely bring Soriano in. But Garcia has to get them to that point. And if the Yankees are losing going into the 9th…run him out there again

  18. Phil C says:

By the way, has A-Rod homered in consecutive games this year?

  19. Professor Longnose says:

    On. Over. In.

    Easy.

  20. Professor Longnose says:

    Commencing pummel.

  21. Michael says:

Canos swing reminds me of Griffey

  22. Phil C says:

Well, a mini pummeling. To bad Jimenez won’t be out for the 7th.

  23. Michael says:

Only thing Swisher ever does is lead the league in having fun. Big deal. He doesn’t walk anymore like he used to. *fingers crossed*

  24. Michael says:

Didn’t work lol. Its okay we have The Formula going now

  25. Michael says:

Shit Andy has a fractured ankle. 60 day DL for him

  26. Phil C says:

I hate it!! Andy was having a great year.

  27. Phil C says:

Cashman will likely go and get someone I’m sure. If he does, I hope it’s someone not currently being mentioned as being available.

    • Michael says:

Actually I would like to see him get Grienke. Statistically speaking it would be like getting CC Sabathia back when the Yankees signed him in 09. Plus its not like they would be giving him a long term deal for lots of money. It would basically be an audition to see if he can handle it. If he can, then you know you should offer him a contract and have essentiall 2 aces. If he cant, well odds are hed still be better than Phelps or Warren.

  28. Professor Longnose says:

Who would it take to get him?

    • Phil C says:

I don’t know, but the asking price for Greinke or Hammels is what I would be concerned about. And with the new CBA you don’t get a draft pic if they go elsewhere.

    • Michael says:

I’m not sure. Seeing as he would only be a rental, albeit a very very good one, it would take a lot. I would give up a top prospect and a couple B level guys for him. He is a rental after all, and theres that social anxiety problem he has.

A lot of people would be against it because of the social anxiety disorder that caused him to take a leave of absence from the game. Hamels could be another option. Neither is officially on the market though as their respective teams are still waiting to see if their teams can bounce back

      • Professor Longnose says:

Maybe they could get Cliff Lee cheap.

        • Michael says:

Just going to throw this name out there as a guy they could maybe get even if its not for cheap…Felix Hernandez.

The Mariners have 3 guys in their minor league system who are potential aces and arent going to win anytime soon.

Honestly if Gardner was healthy I would say trade Granderson. I have wanted the Yankees to trade him for a while now…

  29. Phil C says:

    Love them State Farm runs.

  30. Professor Longnose says:

    (Exhale)

  31. Phil C says:

    FINALLY!!!!

  32. Michael says:

Whewww. *untucks shirt* well its time to go boys. chat with you tomorrow

  33. Phil C says:

    Later ya’ll
