This was really frustrating. Again. Like every game this week. Pardon the short recap, but I think we all need to take a few hours off and clear our heads of this team.

The Yanks put a run on the board in the top of the first on a Robinson Cano double, but didn’t again for the rest of the game. This was the 8th game in May in which the Yankees have scored two or fewer runs. Yikes. Anyway, Phil Hughes pitched reasonably well, but made one bad mistake to Jose Bautista that ended up a two run homer. Cory Wade did the same, and J.P. Arencibia ended up with a two-run jack. That was all the scoring in the game, but the Yankees did have chances, including ones in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings when they didn’t score despite putting runners on base. Blech. The Yankees are definitely going to break out of this, but I’d like it to be sooner rather than later. Friend of the blog Bexy put it very well with this tweet after the game, and I think we’d all agree:

I don’t like it when the Yankees play like poop. They should not play like poop any more.

And our record last year on this date……………………21-19.

Girardi like fidling with lineups, I think he should consider trying Alex in the two hole. He’s only slugging .412 so far this season but he has a .384 OBP, these are perfect two hole numbers. Drop Granderson (who has a sub .350 OBP) to the three spot and your top two guys in the order are both above .380 OBPs with Granderson, Cano, and Teix coming up to slug them in. I suppose you could also put Granderson 5th, move Swisher to 3rd, and drop Teix to 6th, but that’s a lot of movement, and I’d prefer Granderson’s bat above the 5 spot.

One weird twist of fate. No doubt this is an old(er) team. But it’s mainly the young guys (Pineda, Robertson, Joba, Garnder) who are hurt, as opposed to the old(er) guys (except Mo). There is still time to turn it around, but the older the team gets the harder that will be.

A team that has scored one or fewer runs in nine games — and the manager keeps trotting out the same guys in pretty much the same lineup spots.
Tex at this point is a middle of the order rally killer. He should at least be moved down in the lineup. Better yet. maybe he should sit for a few days so he isn’t convulsed on the field with his hacking cough. As everyone agrees, this lineup has lacked life, not to mention production. Here are some possible steps:
–Bring back Nunez as primary RH DH to add some speed to this ancient cast. (Limit ghims to SS in field — it’s not really his fault he can’t play 3B or LF since the Yankees gave him almost no starts in those position in the minors) Dump Nix, who seems to be there for the same reason so many has -been and never-was retreads get called up — he’s one of Cash’s dumpster diving special.
I would also promote either Mustellier or Pearce — both of whom have hit well all year. Tex may have earned a DL rest with his cough — I don’t know. Maybe Eppley should be sent down. The point is some combo of Nunez/Mustellier/Pearce could inject some life into this moribund team.
