Game Thread: Sunday April 6th, Yankees at Royals
The Yankees aren’t playing good baseball right now. The attention has focused mostly on the starting pitching, which has had its ups and downs, but the offense concerns me more. The team woefully misses Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher. Both players were off to solid starts. They’ve been replaced with Raul Ibanez and Andruw Jones, neither of whom is doing much with the stick. Add Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano to the list of Yankees off to sub par starts and you get five players in the starting nine performing at a low level. Is it any wonder the Yankees are hitting like an NL West team?
Maybe today is the day the Yankees right the ship? Don’t count on it. Phil Hughes takes the mound. Hughes has shifted back and forth from looking bad to terrible out there. Predict a four run hole in the third. The Royals counter with Tom Seaver Luke Hochevar. Enjoy.

dont forget russell martin making it 6 regulars, as well as the dh spot being a black hole this year, so its more like 7. montero, anyone?
First, I just don’t like the idea of playing Swisher on a muddy field. Second, could this be Hughes’ last start as a Yankee?
I doubt it. If he’s even a little tiny bit not horrible, they’ll stick with him.
On the other hand, he’s giving no indication so far of being a little tiny bit not horrible.
Credit where it’s due–he got out of the latest jam nicely.
Pettitte’s pitching today…..just saying!
Last seven games, including today, Yanks are 2 for 33 (0.061) RISP.
That is ugly.
Bases loaded–always a test for the Yankees.
SLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!!
Cano doubles his HR & RBI total with one swing!
This is the big test for Hughes now. Given a big lead early he MUST throw strikes, limit his pitches, and get outs. Anything less than 7 innings is simply unacceptable. (Yeah Swish!)
If he gets into the 6th, puts a couple runners on, and Girardi pulls him immediately to avoid having him melt down–I’d settle for that.
I said 7 innings more because he needs to be efficient with his pitch count, so your scenario could fit. However, he just threw 21 pitches in the 3rd inning!!
Well, lots of pitches and no runs isn’t ideal, but it’s better than what we’ve been getting.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around Jeter’s batting line. Its been over a month, but I still can’t believe it.
It’s been long enough that it doesn’t seem like just luck. But I wouldn’t expect him not to have a bad month sometime this year.
Well, 115 pitches for Hughes to go 6.2 innings. Meh. But I guess that he gets another start unless Phelps really dominates.
In the context of Hughes’ season, this was basically a perfect game.
You’re right, and that’s a scary thought!
See y’all Tuesday night for the TB game.
