Is there any explanation for the Yankees inability to win in Los Angeles that doesn’t invoke some sort of logical fallacy? While the Angels have been a very good team for the better part of this decade, that doesn’t quite excuse the Yankees’ veritable incompetence against Los Angeles’ “second team” over that time. As per several of the Twitterati elite, the Yankees are 11-25 as the visiting team since 2005 … which strikes me as baffling, at the very least.

A few items of note:

  • On Monday, MLBTR looked into the Yankees payroll situation as part of its ’2013 Contract Issues’ series. It is very early to consider how the team will look heading into August, let alone next season, but it is interesting to note that this off-season will be intriguing without even considering non-Yankees free agents.
  • Andy Pettitte is confident in his abilities going forward, per Chad Jennings.
  • Hideki Matsui went deep for the Rays last night, and has now hit a home run in his debut for three of his four Major League teams (with the Oakland A’s serving as the outlier).
  • Mark Teixeira is batting .448/.543/1.000 with 4 HR in the eight games following his rest for what can only be described as tuberculosis.

Onto the line-ups:

New York Yankees Los Angeles Angels
Derek Jeter, SS Mike Trout, LF
Curtis Granderson, CF Alberto Callapso, 3B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B Albert Pujols, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B Kendrys Morales, DH
Mark Teixeira, 1B Mark Trumbo, RF
Raul Ibanez, LF Howie Kendrick, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF Erick Aybar, SS
Eric Chavez, DH Peter Bourjos, CF
Russell Martin, C Bobby Wilson, C
Ivan Nova, SP Ervin Santana, SP

The first pitch is scheduled for 10:05 p.m., on the YES Network and ESPN 2. Let’s go Yankees!

One terrible call from Laz Diaz

  2. Phil C says:

Third straight night TB & Balt have lost and Yanks have one more chance to make up some ground. If they lose they are tide fir the basement. However, no matter what happens only 2 games separate last from first in AL East. It’s a distinct chance only one wild card will come from the East.

  3. smurfy says:

Wow, Trout really accelerated rounding 2cd. What a prime athlete.

  4. smurfy says:

Outstanding! Nice homer from Curtis, following the perfect hit-and-run, and the stolen base and other harassment.

  5. smurfy says:

and a ho-ho-homerun from Cano. Things is looking up.

  6. Phil C says:

Important inning for Nova. Nice to see an HR w/RISP, especially after last night when they had two hits w/RISP and didn’t get a run.

  7. smurfy says:

Trumbo is monster. Don’t blame Nova for that run, but the walk to Morales, that’s a bad trend. Put Kendrick on last inning, in front of Pujols. Bad policy, I’m sure Ivan agrees.

    • Michael Eder says:

He’s leaving a lot of pitches up.

      • smurfy says:

I think Trumbo’s was waist high, but on the outside corner. What a fine swing to right! Yeah, that should be danger zone for him.

        • Michael Eder says:

Yea, pitch was called down and away in the zone, finished around waste-high away. A matter of a couple of feet, but could be the difference between a 2 run homerun and a groundball double play.

          • smurfy says:

A foot higher than the knees, and, seeing what Trumbo can do, I’d agree a foot too high.

But you can’t pitch all day at the knees, if you want to mix it up. Most hitters couldn’t handle that.

  8. smurfy says:

Sheiss! Tied, and the second runner would have been held or out if Robbie received the throw as he should.

  9. Phil C says:

I think the Yankees should release Garcia, send Nova to AAA, move Hughes to the pen, and use Phelps and Mitchell (or whoever is pitching well at AAA) as starters.

    • smurfy says:

geez! You’d send Nova down? You wouldn’t give Freddie another shot? You George’s ghost?

    • smurfy says:

I definitely did not like Phil’s start, but worst I’d do to staighten out Ivan or Phil’s thinking is to skip them for a start or two, maybe using Phelps.

      • Phil C says:

I do think that something is needed to shake up this team. Maybe let Pinella take over as manager for awhile. Can we send Girardi to AAA?? (lol)

      • smurfy says:

If anyone in AAA was tearing it up, fine, but noone I’ve heard of. Phil may go to the bullpen later, maybe he’ll do well there. But we need a good starter, so I’d be slow.

Ivan maybe could get tougher from a AAA kick in the butt, but we need starters in the Bigs.

  10. smurfy says:

Well, things have evened out in a sad way. Santana’s probably done, no more punching bag.

  11. smurfy says:

What pitch was it induced the dp, Phil?

  12. smurfy says:

Wow! Ra-a-auuuul! Man, he’s been the surprise under the tree.

  13. smurfy says:

Robbie! Sweet throw! Our infield has done well tonight.

  14. Phil C says:

Anyway, my dog has informed me that it’s time for bed. See you in Detroit! Go Yankees.

  15. smurfy says:

Ho, ho! Even the finish was tense with anxiety! A broken bat fly, but from TRUMBO. Thought it might be gone. Whew!
