Game 19: Beat Verlander
The last time the Tigers met up with the Yankees was last year’s American League Division Series, and things didn’t end up so well. Now the Yankees are stuck in a 2 game losing streak where they’ve only scored 3 runs, and they have the grandiose task of taking on one of the best pitchers in the game, Justin Verlander. In his career, he’s held the team to a 3.97 ERA in 10 starts. Pitching against the Tigers is perhaps the Yankees most reliable starting pitcher, Ivan Nova. The right handed pitcher has been successful against the Tigers in the past, with his only scuffle being an injured start in game 5 of the ALDS. Here are tonight’s starting lineups for tonight, and there is a noticeable absence on the Tiger’s side.
| Yankees | Tigers |
| Derek Jeter SS | Austin Jackson CF |
| Curtis Granderson CF | Brennan Boesch RF |
| Alex Rodriguez DH | Miguel Cabrera 3B |
| Robinson Cano 2B | Prince Fielder 1B |
| Mark Teixeira 1B | Don Kelly LF |
| Nick Swisher RF | Brad Eldred DH |
| Raul Ibanez LF | Alex Avila C |
| Eric Chavez 3B | Jhonny Peralta SS |
| Russell Martin C | Ryan Raburn 2B |
Check out Matt’s special preview of the Tiger’s series with blogger Alexandra Simon. The game starts at 7:05 PM EST on YES/MLBN.

I’m not afraid of Verlander.
Of course, if I were standing 60 feet 6 inches away from the guy with a bat in my hands, I’d be petrified.
OK, when a fly ball bounced off Jose Canseco’s head and went over the fence for a home run, that was a worse play than Ibanez just made. But I can’t think of another one.
I’m surprised they’ll still going with an extra pitcher. Hughes & Garcia (or a replacement) must give them more depth.
Even with the roster they have now, they need to play Jones in left even against a righty.
I kinda doubt Andruw would have gotten to that, but he would probably have kept it to a single. If it was Brett out there, an out for sure.
Why no black armbands for Moose?
Might have gotten the news too late. Maybe tomorrow.
Three innings, three lead off hitters on…..not good.
Lots of groundballs for hits, it looks like bad babip. He’s missed a few spots so far too though. At least he’s missing down.
Infield defense not great either.
Almost 5 groundball hits that inning. Nova looks pretty damn good at least.
Jeter & Chavez looked like statues. Maybe they balls were harder hit than it looked to me, but not much movement from them.
Yeah, he’s getting nickeled and dimed. He pitched out of two on, one out.
The sorry fact is we need 2 off JV just to tie.
Jeter’s not getting his walks. When he stops hitting .400 that could be a problem.
Dang, thought Grandy had one. If he makes good contact, hits it in the air to right, it usually goes.
Yeah, sounded better than it was.
The Yankees should not be losing this game!
They got some good swings in that inning. If Nova can shut them down for the rest of his time, the Yanks have a chance. I think they’ll score again off Verlander.
Yeah. But the runs the gave up…
I missed the Yanks’ 4th. How did they score?
HR by Rodriguez.
Ibanez was styli’ with that ice cream cone.
I loved what Nova’s slider did to the batter after Cabrera. Half swung and fought to keep his feet.
He killed Avila with it, too. The slider’s back!
Nova is really turning out to be something.
Yeah he’s a good, young, cost controlled arm. I’m not so sure I want him around for his next contyract, but he’s a solid middle of the rotation arm until his team control runs out.
All right, a leadoff baserunner. Build that run.
Chavez can get around on Verlander. Convincingly.
Haha, Russell puts us up!
That’s OK, too.
Boy, Arod walloped that to dead center. Must be the wind held that in.
In front of the 408 marker. Would have gone out most other places in the stadium.
Oh, Cano!
Damn! Gotta fight back again. Austin is playing us tough.
Michael Kay said that this was not a good outing by Nova. I disagree. Bad breaks and sloppy defense.
Emphasis on the sloppy defense. They’ve been terrible.
Cold weather?
Suckitude.
Nah,not our boys. Mojo’s just slow as molasses.
Molassitude.
See? Ibanez payback!
Yes! THEY screw up on defense!
C’mon Eric. Gear it up, because Verlander is. 3 97′s in a row.
Down by one run against Verlander in the 7th sounds a whole lot different from down by one run against Dotel in the 7th.
alright, boys, let’s go! Hope they warmed the bats for you.
Leadoff man on. 270 feet to go.
alright. alright, 90 to go!
and tied up! New game in the 8th!
Now 90 feet to tie.
And the tying run comes in!
c’mon, Swishie!
Nyeah, nyeah, Benoit.
Sure wanted to put them away right there, so I’m disappointed. But pretty good work to tie it, anyway.
Yeah.
Still anyone’s game. One of them has to go and win it.
I kinda would like to save Mo for a lead. Maybe Robertson could have gone two?
No way for Mo to get a save when tied after 8 innings. Hopefully he’ll get the win.
That doesn’t matter to me much. I’m just thinking what works best.
Oh, well, they just need to knock a run around.
Can’t have a lead. If they score, it’s a walk off.
yeah, I misspoke: I meant I wanted to save Mo for later.
Let’s see if Jeter can hold off from swinging at the first pitch.
Would be pretty hard to swing at that pitch.
Yeah…and he walked. OK. 270 feet to go.
Angles released Abreu??
woo, that’s one way to deal with overstocks. That club is so ill-fitted. 3 1st basemen, 5,6 outfielders.
Another walk would be great.
90′ to go!
90 feet for the win!
A slide off!!
yeah!
woo-hoo! Villareal threw hard with a lot of movement: thanks! Jete just made it.
Great win. See you tomorrow.
Indeed, goodnight.
