Nightly Links: Garcia, Budget, Old People
- The team has finally placed a competitive bid on one of the many big name international free agents this offseason, offering infielder Adonis Garcia $16m over 6 years. The team plans to convert the righty to an outfielder.
- Hal Steinbrenner confirmed that the $189 million budget for 2014 is very real. The team will need pieces to fall in the right way to keep such a low payroll, most importantly continued success from Michael Pineda and Ivan Nova.
- Over at FoxSports, Bob Klapisch believes that the Yankees need their aging stars in order to compete this year. With Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, and Mark Teixeira heading the offense last year, I couldn’t disagree more. A big season from Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, or Hiroki Kuroda might not be guaranteed, but the team is far from reliant on them.
- A few weeks ago I linked to Bill Petti’s great series on park factors, and yesterday he appeared on MLB Network’s Clubhouse Confidential. Glad to see more advanced analysis on MLB Network.
- It was a half day for workouts in camp today, with each pitcher getting some work in. Why was it a half day? Because the team had some fun tonight at Tampa Improv.

Adonis is 26? Are they expecting him to come off the bench or is he heading to Scranton with hopes of taking over RF?
Yea, I’d assume the plan is to send him to A+ or AA and have him spend the season aggressively promoted through the minors. He’d probably only make the team when the rosters expand or if Ibanez or Jones had terrible seasons.
I gotta say this doesn’t seem like the kind of guy the Yankees normally target. I mean being 26 years old and described as a short, slow, terrible defending outfielder, with mediocre pop, isn’t the best scouting report. Seems as though he has limited upside and less time than normal to make the major league leap. Probably would have been better off spending the 9-10 million necessary to sign Gerardo Concepcion, at least go with the young, upside pitching.
I’ve heard some skepticism from connected folks about the offer (or at least its magnitude), so we’ll see what happens. It very well could be a ploy by Garcia’s agent to drive up his price.
I’d probably prefer the Yankees put that money into Soler, but I’m basically going off scouting reports so I have no real way of knowing. I guess Garcia could work as a cheap outfield replacement for 2013-14 in the context of the austerity budget (assuming one of Swisher or Granderson walks).
I’d go Soler for the youth and Upside alone, though who knows if he’s going to get a major league deal or not. I didn’t think he would at first, now though I’m not so sure. If Soler gets a major league deal though it wouldn’t be a fair comparison, I assume Adonis would be on a minor league deal.
