Nightly Links: Chavez, Martin, Burnett
- Eric Chavez was officially resigned tonight. The major league deal is worth $900,000, but in order to make room on the 25-man roster, the team will likely move Pedro Feliciano to the 60-day DL.
- News from camp has Russell Martin talking about his offseason training. He vowed to be the “fittest Yankee” and was quoted saying,
“If there’s any guys in more shape than me, I’d be surprised. If there are, I’d be happy, because I’m coming ready this year.”
- Mike Axisa wrote about the upcoming free agent market and how the Yankees can avoid some very high priced contracts if they extend Martin now.
- Mike Mazzeo of ESPN New York collected a few quotes from A.J. Burnett following his trade to Pittsburgh. Burnett appears far from bitter, and astonishingly understanding about the situation. His pitching might not have stood up to take the New York market, but his personality did.
- Finally, for more information on today’s workouts in Tampa, Chad Jennings again summarizes the schedule from camp.

- Most poker sites open to US players also provide online casinos accepting USA players. A good example of this is BetOnline.com, where you can play 3D casino games, bet on sports or play poker from anywhere in the United States.

Between Ibanez, Chavez, and Branyan I feel good about the left handed DH spot, we should be fine until at least the All-Star break with some combo of that group. We may need an upgrade by the trade deadline, a Berkman type, but this is more than fine for the early part of the season at least.
This whole Martin thing is very simple, how much do you value Martin versus M. Montero and Romine? If you value him highly over Romine you have to sign him or Montero to a long term deal of some kind, if you value Montero over Martin but not by 2-3 years and many more millions you have your answer. I think it’s pretty clear the club values Martin over Romine because they talked about a 3 year deal before signing his one year. So now they just have to settle how they feel about Martin’s health concerns and Montero’s bat.
AJ has handled everything very well from day one. I’m sure some will point to him talking to Girardi on his way off the mound last year, but that happenes in multiple games per day in baseball. He had two really tough years, took it on the chin, and always tried to do better next start out. I hope he does well for the Pirates.
AJ did try his best, and I hope he excels in his fresh start. Maybe he’s right that the Yanks tinkered with his turn, and that cost him velocity, but I’d much rather hear him talk about another pitch he’ll mix in.
He probably can muster more than the 92 average, but 93 likely can’t make up for the lack of command.
