According to Jack Curry, the Yankees have agreed to terms with starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda. Buster Olney reports that the contract is one year at $10m. This comes as a big surprise after the Montero/Pineda swap tonight. It was clear the Yankees were still interested in acquiring a starting pitcher this offseason, and tonight they signed two.

On December 12, 2007, Kuroda signed a $35.3 million deal with Los Angeles Dodgers. At 33, he pitched to a 3.73 ERA in his first year in the major leagues. In 2009, Kuroda was announced as the Dodgers opening day starter, and although he faced ongoing injuries during the season, he ended with a 3.76 ERA in his second year. After his 2010 season, Kuroda resigned with Dodgers and at the July trade deadline refused a trade.

Kuroda posted a 3.07 ERA last season, with a 7.17 K/9 and 2.18 BB/9. He turns 37 this year, and it’ll be interesting to see how his numbers translate from the National League West to the American League East. Over his last three years, he’s been the epitome of a number two pitcher for the Dodgers. Along with Pineda, the Yankees have added two relatively cheap top of the rotation  pitchers, and are still on track to stay below the 2014 luxury tax.

This only leaves us guessing who will lose their rotation spots.

Can we stop talking about Bartolo Colon now?

  2. Matt DiBari says:

Trade Burnett for anything on earth.

    • Reggie C. says:

We’re probably trading Burnett or Hughes in the coming hours/days/weeks … (who knows).

If Cashman has got something happening on the Burnett-end, the yanks are probably eating more than $8 million and i’d wager the figure is closer to $18 million.

I’m just stunned right now. Montero showed sooo much offensive promise, and its not like the squad can’t use a power hitter like Montero given the age on Arod and inconsistency of Teixeira.

      • Michael Eder says:

I suppose Cashman thinks that Montero’s hot streak in September leaves him at a high trade value. My money is on trading Burnett or Nova.

        • T.O. Chris says:

There would be no reason to trade Nova, unless you are somehow getting ridiculous value on a young bat. Having Pineda and Nova in the rotation is a huge advantage for the future. Especially when you consider Banuelos is in the minors.

You’d be better off DFA’ing Burnett over trading Nova.

  3. Chip says:

Hughes to AAA, Garcia as the long man in the pen?

  4. Michael P. says:

Nice one year deal. CC, Pineda, Kuroda, and Nova is a damn good 1-4. And he will be gone next year in case we want to dip into the talented free agent pool to get 1 more ace. Anyway wow. Patience is a virtue huh?

    • smurfy says:

wow. different equation. We are going to be stronger this year, whew. Yes on that patience thing.

      still liked to watch Bartolo.

  5. GregP says:

We can only hope that Burnett is dropped from the rotation. Get rid of him anyway you can! Hughes is a big question mark. Send him back to Triple A to see how he fares and then figure out who else needs to go.
