Special day today for a few reasons, some more important than others. Obviously its the 10 year anniversary of 9/11/2001 and our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who lost a loved one on that day, and to the military families who lost a member in its aftermath. From the Yankee perspective, its a special day because super-prospect Jesus Montero gets his first start behind the plate. It’s a good day for it, veteran starter Freddy Garcia pretty much calls his own game and doesn’t throw overly hard, so even if Montero’s not up to speed defensively it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Expect base runners to test his arm, but also expect Garcia to pay more attention to men on first base. They’ll work it out for a few games.

In other news, the Yanks have called up Austin Romine to back up Montero, since Russel Martin will be out for at least a few days and Cervelli is out indefinitely. Concussions are tricky, as we all know Justin Morneau is still having issues more than a year removed from his concussion and Frankie’s had more than one. The Yanks have to be careful with injuries at this point of the year. The schedule is brutal, and then we get this tweet from Buster Olney this afternoon:

Evaluators trailing NYY have real doubts about whether Swisher, A-Rod, Martin will be ok rest of season. Also say Gardner is exhausted.

Here’s your lineup from Chad Jennings over at LoHud:

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano DH
Jesus Montero C
Eric Chavez 3B
Andruw Jones RF
Eduardo Nunez 2B
Brett Gardner LF

Freddy Garcia on the mound facing Ervin Santana. GO YANKS!!!!!

  1. Professor Longnose says:

I was having so much fun watching the Red Sox stink, I hesitated to switch over to the Yankee game. But I did.

  2. Professor Longnose says:

I switched back to the Red Sox game in time to see Upton hit a grand slam: 8-1 Rays.

  3. Professor Longnose says:

The Yankees have a runner in scoring position! That is so cool!

  4. Professor Longnose says:

    And a run! Amazing.

  5. Professor Longnose says:

Montero nails the first runner to try to steal on him. Nice throw.

  6. Professor Longnose says:

Gardner walks to lead off the 3rd. Opportunity’s knocking.

  7. smurfy says:

Opportunity is playing “Guess Who’s Here!” Howdy, Prof. What ability to switch “over to the RS game”? You got a package?

    • Professor Longnose says:

I recently switched TV providers, and they gave me a free year of the MLB extra innings package–all the games–as an incentive.

  8. smurfy says:

Hunter deked us! He went back to the wall on Robbie’s homer, and raised his glove, as it went 29 feet over his head.

  9. smurfy says:

    Knock him in, Andruw!

Chavez hit his double so squarely, it corkscrewed to elude Bourjos.

  10. smurfy says:

Ah, Brett, damn! Bases loaded and nowhere to go.

  11. Duh, Innings! says:

The Yankees cannot smash a #3 or better starter and they better come postseason time because they don’t have the rotation depth to go toe-to-toe with the opposing starter every game.

I could see Sabathia going toe-to-toe with the opposing starter every start he makes, I can’t see Nova, Garcia, and Colon doing that, as well as they have pitched this year.

I’m not saying beat up every #3 or better because that’s just unrealistic, but you need to beat up at least one so you can allow your guy some margin for error. Destroy Max Scherzer and if Garcia battles for six innings, he gets a break and you hope he can do better next time. The Yankees offense is good enough to destroy any #3 or better but they are not actualizing their talent.

The Yankees offense is too Jekyll-And-Hyde. 5+ runs a game but they score 8 runs one game and 2 the next. Alot of HR and nice OBP, but not enough doubles and BA. Cano is their only consistent .300+ hitter (I don’t consider Jeter one anymore despite his post-d.l. surge.)

  12. smurfy says:

Well, welcome back, Curtis! Trailing by a single run, again.

  13. Professor Longnose says:

Nice to see them hitting homers again. Too bad Garcia isn’t dong very well.

  14. Professor Longnose says:

    Get Garcia out of there.

  15. Duh, Innings! says:

Now it’s 5-4 Angels. This is what I’m talking about. Your starter doesn’t have it, but neither does the opposing starter cuz he got smacked around, too. It’s not good your guy stinks, but maybe you can let him off the hook by beating up the other guy.

Could Boston be in the midst of a collapse? 9-1 Tampa Bay last check LOL.

It sucks the Yanks aren’t taking advantage of Boston losing, but there are so few games left, the Yanks could win the division by simply playing .500 or a game over .500.

If the Yanks and Red Sox lose today, it’s 87-58 Yanks and 85-61 Red Sox. Even if the Yanks play 9-8 ball the rest of the way, Boston has to play 11-5 ball to win the division, 12-4 or .750 ball if the Yanks win today, and I just don’t see Boston winning over twice as many games as they lose or winning three of every four games with their rotation after Lester even with seven more against the Os.

  16. Professor Longnose says:

The Red Sox went 2-8 to open the season. Then they went 81-44 over the guts of the season. Then they went 2-9.

  17. Professor Longnose says:

They showed some video of Montero practicing blocking pitches in the dirt, with coaches bouncing throws to him.

  18. Professor Longnose says:

Since throwing out that runner in the second, Montero has not looked good behind the plate.

  19. Professor Longnose says:

Big popup. Now they have a chance to get out of it.

  20. smurfy says:

    Nunie, with the extra thrill!

  21. Professor Longnose says:

Had to go to 3-2, huh?

  22. Professor Longnose says:

    Yaaaaaaah!

  23. smurfy says:

“What’s all the fuss?” Freddie Garcia

  24. smurfy says:

I thought Nunie was safe. But Andruw kinda grabbed a shoe, as he was going under.

  25. smurfy says:

Three quick ones by Cory. Now, hit the gas, Yankees!

    Attaway, Brett!

  26. Professor Longnose says:

Hmm. Opportunity, despite finding the door locked previously, has stumbled back to the same address and knocked again.

  27. smurfy says:

So happy they didn’t bunt! Nice one, Jete! Time for the poo-rade!

  28. Professor Longnose says:

Tying run on third, but let’s think big inning.

  29. Professor Longnose says:

All right, forget the big inning. Get that damn tying run in.

  30. smurfy says:

Tex heard ya, but the Angels decided different.

    Great baserunning by Jeter.

  31. Professor Longnose says:

Montero’s first intentional walk. Awwww. It’s like your kid’s first gold star.

  32. smurfy says:

Chavez has been hitting all day.

    Shecks, gotta be difficult.

  33. Duh, Innings! says:

    Will Michael Kay speak English?

    “That was a YUUUUGE play!”

    It’s HUGE not “yuge”.

  34. Professor Longnose says:

And we get to see Romine, too. This game is actually interesting.

  35. Professor Longnose says:

Weird play, but I’ll take it. The out is the important thing.

  36. Duh, Innings! says:

    Soriano escapes the jam haha.

Seriously, he needs to step up his game.

  37. smurfy says:

Alright! Touch and go, there. Didn’t like that interference by Hunter. Why didn’t they call that?

  38. smurfy says:

Let’s see if Dave and Mo can stuff ‘em.

  39. smurfy says:

Hey, Prof: that was pretty neat when three biggees were contributing here. That story about Stick and Phil was a good one. Then, they disappeared. Why?

  40. Professor Longnose says:

Nice teamwork to get Bourjos. Glad Sabathia wasn’t on the mound for that, though.

    • smurfy says:

yeah. Dave was speedy hisself. And Michael complimented Tex’s leading toss. I noticed with Swish last week that was the hardest thing for him. And Brandon Laird.

  41. Professor Longnose says:

What do you think, smurfy? Should the Yankees score some runs here?

  42. smurfy says:

Curtis just missed one. Takahashi looks weird with that double-clutch leg kick. But after you get used to it, maybe easier to time him.

    oh, no hesitation that time.

  43. Professor Longnose says:

Time for Rivera to regain his dominance.

  44. smurfy says:

    sweet Mo, on Branyan.

  45. smurfy says:

lucky ducks! these dingle hits have been frustrating!

  46. smurfy says:

    wow! Halleluyah! Good game, Yanks.

10:07 starts for the next three.

  47. Professor Longnose says:

The sun breaks through the clouds! Everything’s going to be all right!

  48. Professor Longnose says:

Red Sox are now exactly halfway between the Yankees and Rays, 3 1/2 games each way.

  49. Duh, Innings! says:

If the Yanks play just 9-8 ball the rest of the way, Boston would have to play 12-4 / 3 wins every 4 games / .750 ball to win the division.

I think the Yanks will play at least 9-8 ball and no way Boston is playing 12-4 or better.

The Yanks unofficially clinched the division yesterday.
