Game Thread | Game 146 | Yankees vs. Mariners | Monday, September 12, 2011
The Yankees do battle with the owner and sole proprietor of Yankee Global Enterprises, Felix Hernandez, kicking things off at 10:00pm pm tonight in Seattle.
Your lineup, courtesy of LoHud:
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira DH
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher 1B
Eric Chavez 3B
Brett Gardner LF
Chris Dickerson RF
Austin Romine C
Phil Hughes P
Nice to see Swisher back in the lineup. Tex gets half a day off, while Austin Romine makes his first career MLB start at catcher. A little disappointed that Jesus Montero won’t get to take his hacks against the King, but maybe we’ll see him pinch hit.

I wonder if Swisher is playing first base only because Teixeira is DHing, or if he still can’t play right field because of his elbow.
He gets small mercy. Is Tex limping, too?
I’m in the mood for a little regicide.
Looks like Felix is on tonight. This could be ugly.
When is Felix off?
Probably when the Yankees are not his subjects or objects.
Against Boston, July 22.
Did he let the Ruddy Sox ruddy pound him?
Yep. Six runs in 6 1/3 innings. Bleh.
Phil mows ‘em down! If he can keep it close, who knows what can happen.
Carp’s hit sounded like a broken bat, tho it did skip unnicely thru the Phil wickets.
That was a pretty sharp 59 foot curve. He went back to the knuckle curve, I guess.
He’s flinging his fastball pretty well, fluid-like as a bear can be.
They get the DP. No doubt to celebrate your arrival on the YA game thread, smurfy.
Gardner leads off with a single. That’s always a good thing.
Two hits in a row! This could be the start of something wonderful.
Well, well, Dickerson CAN connect!
Dang, big out. Up to the captain to get the run in.
I guess no-name centerfielders can throw pretty well.
Clever of Dickerson to get his foot to stick. Got it trained as a tailhook?
A hit would have been nice, but he got the run in. I’ll take it.
Yeah, I see, Gardner didn’t have to risk it, with only one out. That was a strong throw, too.
Granderson swings plenty fast enough to catch up with Felix’ fastball, the questions are identifying it, that it’s fb or changeup, not curve or slider, and avoiding swinging hard at a changeup.
Yeah. That’s really the toughest part of hitting.
guess the batspeed means he has a little longer to decide. That’s why Barry Bonds and Manny Ramirez were so uncanny.
Ichiro just showed me something about the Decision. He moves his body before he snaps a swing off, late in the process, eg ,toward left if he wants. Robbie also has a similar move before he swings.
uncanny out of a bottle
That was a regular curve for strike 1 on Travon? That fb had some snap to it.
Swisher’s elbow is still bothering him.
Cervelli is gone for a while. I don’t think that’s a big loss, given Montero and Romine hanging around.
yeah, and we’ll see, I’m hopeful.
Phil cut the knees most sweetly. Change, maybe.
The Mariner uniforms are ugly.
The Rays’ powder blue is quite attractive, tho.
Powder Blues are cool, but I don’t like the colored-shirt/white-pants combo in any color.
Phil coughed up the lead. Bummer.
He’s been pitching well, though. Ichiro is still a cut above, harder to pitch to.
Nice long one from TEX!?!?!!!
Teixeira connects! Hey, they’re not looking horrible, which against the King is pretty good.
We beat up on him and Pineda in June? coming out of a cold streak, getting onto a hot one.
Cano doubles! They’re cooking with gas.
Ooh, Sir Robbie shows his authority!
Swish said to himself,” That looks like fun.” And he forgot about the elbow. Probably what Joe is looking for.
Damn! Chavez slugged that one! The King’s nickers may be showing.
Let’s see if the bunting bum can get the runner over.
All right! Now I’m starting to get excited.
Well, how sweet is that?
Brettster!
Oh, man! Gardner doubles!! The Yankees are hitting the king.
Off with his head! Off with his head!
And you can beat the Mariners with 4 runs a good deal of the time.
Did I say Dickerson connected before? NOPE – NOW he’s connected!
A nice time for him to have a great game, isn’t it?
And Dickerson brings out the guillotine! This is beautiful
that one sounded sharp enough.
6 runs SHOULD beat the Mariners.
easy, easy… don’t jinx it.
That’s not a bad sign. A swinging K, even if he did foul tip it (into Romine’s fortuitous glove).
Yes, good hook from Hughes.
All right, Phil, get rolling. It’s only the Mariners.
Smoak does have a nice big swing, even if he misses it.
Phil’s curve is going to get one of these hitter’s shoes to come off.
I’m with Al (first thought): shoulda thrown a curve on 2 strikes. They have been missing it big.
Oh, well, I guess a lineout to left is ok, this time. But what happened? He was clicking on that curve, then he stopped throwing it.
I watched most of the O’s-Rays game. First I was watching it from the Baltimore feed, but it was so depressing I had to switch to the Rays feed. The Baltimore announcers were trying so hard to be positive, and they had so little to work with.
I was listening to MLB network Live tonight, and Harold Reynolds sent me over the wall with his act of “Oh, I saw the Rays getting hot early, so it was no surprise to a clever guy like me.” I may be harsh, but seems phoney to me.
(along the lines of the announcers’ attitude makes a difference)
There was a guy on ESPN now”predicting” the Rays will win the wild card. It’s ridiculous. They don’t know anything other than what’s happening at the moment.
Teixeira hits one through the shift. Nice.
I think I’m going to pack it in. No sense in staying up and giving them the whammy. See you tomorrow.
Seeya! Professor, tidy nighty! See ya tomorrow.
Didn’t like the way Phil pitched Ichiro, the last pitch, anyway: he had just got a letter high strike past him, and he shoulda gone down in or down away, but he went center pipe.
The ump is unkind! That was a strike that Smoak walked on. Al is saying Romine bothered him, he wanted to raise his arm.
Wow. That’s one way to get out of a bases loaded jam: groove a fb and hope it doesn’t get over Curtis’ head.
Cortes in to start the 7th. Nice clean first hit to right center for Austin Romine, a liner.
Wow, Jeter does the same, the poo-rade is forming.
Robbie wrists the tenth pitch, low and outside corner, and Travon Robinson couldn’t believe it was going to the wall. Three in!
Good night, all.

The Yanks finally smashed an ace – nice!!!
Four games up on Boston with 16 games left to play :)
Division! Homefield advantage throughout the postseason!!
Tampa Bay the wildcard??? LOL! ‘Could be as they gained a half-game on Boston last night – three behind Boston now hahaha.
