At the moment tonight’s game is in a rain delay. According to YES the powers that be will next assess whether or not the game can be played at about 8:45 pm Eastern time. Hopefully we’ll get to see Yankee baseball tonight. If we do, here are the guys who’ll take the field:
Derek Jeter – SS
Curtis Granderson – CF
Mark Teixeira – 1B
Robinson Cano – 2B
Nick Swisher – RF
Andruw Jones – DH
Russell Martin – C
Eduardo Nunez – 3B
Brett Gardner – LF
Jeter is back just in time to slot in at lead off against the lefty John Danks. The Yankees will counter with Phil Hughes.
Update: The game is on, and Hughes was hitting 95 on the gun! Enjoy!

Hughes is missing bats. This is the best he’s looked since the start of 2010.
Yep.
Very good stuff for Phil tonight. I was wondering if maybe the gun was ticked up when it started, but he’s missing the bats to backup the gun.
Boy, Phil’s gonna get the conflict started. 55 pitches thru 5, with one baserunner. I guess Nova’s gonna have to break out the no-hitter.
Good. There’s nothing wrong with having six starters, ever.
For one night Hughes is reminding me why he’s the hyped prospect and Nova is not. Nova just doesn’t have stuff like this. He can pitch well, but when Hughes is on he shows flashes of dominance. I’d forgotten.
This is still a shade less than the best movement on his high fastballs early last year. Believe his curve is a lot sharper, tho.
Let’s not overblow one start though. It’s a great start, and it means alot to Hughes. But we shouldn’t start penciling his name into the number 2 starter spot come playoff time just yet.
nah, no rush to judge. Heck, the Yankees invented ways to rest warriors during the dog days.
Very encouraging start non the less though. He won’t be this every time out, but knowing he still has this in him shows why Nova was sent down for him. As Mike said.
I would like to see Hughes stay in the big league rotation over Nova, if for no other reason than I think Hughes has to be a bigger part of next years rotation than Nova does. There is a chance that Hughes has to be the number 3 starter out of spring training, if we don’t make a trade, or sign CJ Wilson. At most Nova would be the number 4 starter, and I think the Yankees would be most comfortable having a rotation deep enough for him to be their 5th guy.
I actually do think the Yankees are going to make a hard push for Wilson, because he would push Burnett to number 3, and Hughes and Nova to 4th and 5th respectively. Which would allow them to go at the right pace on both Banuelos and Betances. I could see Colon or Garcia one coming back on a 5th year deal, but I doubt they want both back. In fact I think one only comes back if the Yankees can’t sign CJ.
Yeah, Colon or Garcia has to falter before I’d think of letting either go.
Why? Catching lightning in a bottle doesn’t often happen twice. I would be very wary of bringing either one back next year, to be honest. I would bring back Colon, if he finished really strong, and if I couldn’t find a better upgrade first. Then I would still only bring him in on a 1 year deal, 1 or 2 million base, incentive laden.
Some people just can’t respect contact pitchers, I guess.
Michael Kay said if Phil’s the choice, Nova should go the pen, and Noesi should go down. I dunno, maybe Ayala needs a rest. He’s looked a little shaky. Or was that just the last time?
Betances has really been struggling lately. He went 4 innings tonight, giving up 6 hits, 3 earned runs, allowed 4 walks, and struckout 5.
In his last 10 starts (including tonight) Betances has pitched 48.0 innings, with a 5.06 ERA, with 5.81 BB/9, and 9.94 K/9. AA batters are only hitting .211 off of him during this stretch, but he has certainly had more control problems lately.
Montero busted out the big stick tonight. He backed up Banuelos’ first start by going 3-4, with a 2 out, solo HR. He did allow a stolen base, and Banuleos did have a WP tonight. Without seeing it I can’t know how much of either play was his fault. Montero now has 3 home runs in his last 9 games, for a total of 11 on the year.
That ties Jose Bautista for the lead league!
no kidding. What’s Grandy at? 29?
No he’s still on 28.
He’s been hitting alot of hard shots lately, often at sweet times. Guess he hasn’t been elevating. Last night, he hit a few feet down the wall. I love doubles, too.
Granderson’s numbers have been off the chart all over this year.
In 394 ABs this year Curtis has 107 H, 28 HR, 17 2B, 8 3B, 96 R, 79 RBI, 19 SB, and a triple slash line of .272/.362/.569 with a wOBA of .398. All the while playing center field. He really has been amazing.
yah, that is amazing!
we are at the 2/3 mark of the season. That production rate is AMAZING.
Tex, oh I like the frequency. Keep a-rolling, big fella!
Nice liner by Jones, but Frasor’s fastball was right there. Ah, feeling good to be a Yankee fan again.
This is why I hate delaying game because their might be rain. You lose 45 minutes for nothing, and because of it this game has to be delayed in the 7th.
Ow! It’s raining hard! Did they have the weatherman yet?
Phil was keeping such a pace, we would’ve been in the 9th, Mo humming. But, whoknows? Maybe Phil would never have gotten started so well.
“Michael Kay said if Phil’s the choice, Nova should go the pen, and Noesi should go down. I dunno, maybe Ayala needs a rest. He’s looked a little shaky. Or was that just the last time?”
When did he say that? Early in the game he said that he thought Nova should be sent down, because Noesi didn’t deserve to be.
No, think you misheard.
Ran it back on Tivo. He said it. He said he wanted Hughes to stay in the rotation, because if it was Nova Hughes would have to go to the pen and that would send the undeserving Noesi down.
Anyway, I don’t care about his opinion. I asked what you think about Ayala taking a rest.
The run he gave up to Baltimore was the first since Toronto on the 14th, and only the 3rd run he gave up in all of June and July combined. He is clearly pitching over his head to some degree, and a 3.24 FIP and 3.85 xFIP suggest he in for some kind of regression.
I don’t much believe in the magic power of regression, except where the limits of belief have been stretched. Motivation, mindset is the more powerful factor. Ayala has been well engaged this year, maybe he had an off night.
It wouldn’t kill Noesi, but he has been pretty steady.
Boy, Tigers-Rangers game was a back-and-forth slugger’s dream.
“Some people just can’t respect contact pitchers, I guess.”
It has nothing to do with that. The truth of the matter is Garcia and Colon were and are both question marks for a reason, and expecting this year to be both of their new normals is pretty silly. Neither one is likely to pitch this well ever again at their age, and if you can get one great year out of guys like this you count yourself lucky and move on. I guarantee the Yankees don’t plan to move forward with both of these guys, and they will look to replace both of them in the offseason if they can.
If they sign CJ Wilson then the rotation is set at CC, CJ, AJ, Hughes, and Nova. This is the direction I think they want to go with as plan A. If they can’t, or won’t, meet Wilson’s demands they will probably look to a trade or Edwin Jackson before coming back to Colon on a 1 year deal. I imagine Freddy Garcia is more like plan E or F for next season. It’s nothing against him, or his style, he just isn’t likely to be this good ever again.
What Garcia and Colon have done is amazing for sure, but it’s not like these guys deserve multi-year deals now. Or even big money one year deals for that matter, they simply aren’t reliable enough.
I’m sorry, but question marks answered by miracles, Garcia is pitching wonderfully. Why desert him before you see a weakness? Plenty of time to plan for next year later.
We got a test for the Chief lined up for Friday or Saturday: the BoSox! It’ll work itself out, but I am looking forward to that!
The 2012 rotation is set with Wilson, Burnett, Hughes, and Nova after Sabathia? Burnett is a #4 being paid like an ace or #2, Hughes and Nova are no higher than #4s at this point, and who knows what Wilson would do as a Yankee?
The Yanks are better off claiming Jake Peavey off waivers from the fading Chi-Sox and taking a one-year $21M risk ($17M salary for 2011 + $4M buyout if the Yanks decline his $22M club option for 2013) on him than giving a big multi-year contract to another veteran starter who is neither an ace nor a #2 like Wilson. They already have one overpriced #4 in Burnett. If Wilson sucks then it’s two bad contracts through 2013 (him and Burnett.) If Peavey has a big 2012 (17-20 wins, sub 4 ERA, 200+ IP), the Yanks just pick up his $22M club option for 2013. Alot of money, yes, but where are you finding a free agent who has a year like that willing to re-sign for just a year? Nowhere. Picking up his club option for 2013 after a great 2012 is like re-signing him for a year. The Yanks could see if he can repeat or top his 2012. They could let go of Peavey, Burnett, and Hughes after 2013 if they aren’t worth re-signing for $38.5M plus whatever Hughes makes (assuming he’s in the 2013 rotation) cleared.
gee, X, you sure remind me of someone…no, don’t tell me, duh…it’ll come to me
Michael was hilarious about calling the game because they threw out the Gatorade. Can’t waste precious fluids!
So Phil throws a (short) shutout! Dandy!
Boy, you know Baltimore and Chicago are saying, “The Yankees are one tough team.”
Trade deadline? Jimenez?
