After going 7-3 on their recent home stand, the Yankees look to continue their improved play on the road. The Yankees open their road trip with a four game series in Chicago. Mark Teixeira will be a key player as the season winds down. After a horrible start to the month of July Tex began hitting better at home, but he’s always been a better hitter at home, for any team he was on. If he can continue to swing the bat better on the road the Yankees will find themselves well positioned to chase the Red Sox down the stretch.

Brett Gardner – LF
Curtis Granderson – CF
Mark Teixeira – 1B
Robinson Cano – 2B
Nick Swisher – RF
Eric Chavez – 3B
Jorge Posada – DH
Eduardo Nunez – SS
Francisco Cervelli – C

And on the mound, the one, the only, the soon to be richest pitcher in baseball for the second time, CC Sabathia.

If only we could move Jeter down to the 7th hole in the lineup everyday. Ultimately it would better serve the team to have Gardner and Granderson leadingoff games, and move Jeter’s bat further down. I don’t think there is a chance it’s going to happen this year though.

When Alex comes back, and Montero gets the call I would like to see Cano moved up to the 4 hole, with Alex hitting 5th everyday.

    Gardner
    Jeter
    Granderson
    Cano
    Rodriguez
    Teixeira
    Swisher
    Montero
    Martin

Like I said I think it would serve the team more to drop Jeter to 7th and move the rest of the spots up one, but this is the best we can hope for I think. Though I doubt they will let Teixiera hit 6th. I fear that once Arod comes back they will move Gardner back down to 9th, and start using Jeter as the leadoff man again. Or they will stay as is and move Cano to hitting 6th, either one would be a mistake in my opinion.

Chis, I think Joe really does not want to be vulnerable to a LOOGY in late innings, so:
      Gardner, Jete, Grandy, then
Rodriguez, Cano, Tex, Swish, Posado, Martin

      aginst a lefty:
Jete, Grandy, Rodriguez, Cano, Tex, Swish, Jete, Sado, Martin

if Montero, then it’s Montero, Swish, Martin; and M,S, Jete, M

      • T.O. Chris says:

Granderson leads the league in home runs against left handed pitching this year, Cano lead the league in home runs against left handed pitching last year. They are not the two that would be vulnerable.

I don’t want Rodriguez hitting third period, and he has struggled against lefties all year. If it comes down to Cano and Alex to hit 3rd, it should be Cano.

  2. Duh, Innings! says:

The Yanks could move Captain Can’t Hit Anymore to the seventh slot but are scared to for whatever reason which baffles me as what would he do, complain privately and/or publicly, jake it, or refuse to play? No, no, and no.

The trade deadline is over and Montero is still with the organization. What the hell is Posada doing in tonight’s lineup and why isn’t Montero making his major league debut at DH tonight? Great job by Posada swinging at the first pitch after the Yanks prolong the first inning and get Peavy to throw over 20 pitches. I will honestly be glad when Posada is gone from the Yanks after this year because he has been a whiny, pouty bitch all year when he has no right to be pulling down star dollars at $13.1M.

It’s as if the Yankees organization is scared of Posada as well, or the possibility that Montero could be called up and take Posada’s job from him where Posada would be lucky to play twice a week. The Yanks owe Posada and CCHA absolutely nothing for the money they’re paying these two.

  3. Duh, Innings! says:

Re: Cano. Two weak at-bats tonight and he has 16 HR through July for a 24 HR pace by months and a BA just under .300 instead of the .320 or higher he has shown he is capable of producing. Does anyone have the feeling the Yanks will trade him in a blockbuster trade for an ace/#2 or big hitter before his contract is up? I just can’t see the Yanks paying him the minimum $20M per year I think he’ll want with all the money they’re already paying Sabathia, A-Rod, and Teixiera and probably will pay an ace/#2 guy if they get one. Isn’t Scott Boras Cano’s new agent? If so, expect Boras to ask for the sun, the moon, and the stars for Cano and as much as I like Cano and think he’s a very good player, I don’t think he’s worth star money or money on the level of prime CCHA, A-Rod, Teixiera etc.

So the Yanks are going with a six-man rotation for now. I am disgusted. I guess the Yanks feel they have games to play with starting Hughes. What’s really pathetic and stupid about this ridiculous move is this makes Hughes’ value even lower. Hughes still in the rotation when he sucks further magnifies his ineptitude. It’s like keep him here so we don’t send him down and lower his trade value with the demotion. Cashman might as well put up a big billboard I AM AFRAID TO SEND PHIL HUGHES DOWN TO AAA WHERE HE BELONGS. This smacks of Hughes being the MLB version of the dumb nephew who is working in the family business cuz needs to do something to earn money but is adding nothing to the business thus is an unneeded labor cost cutting into profit.

  4. J says:

Kay is really going off on tonight’s homeplate ump McCelland for McCelland’s slow handraising and I agree. Speed it up, McCelland!!!

  5. smurfy says:

Swish – no, no, no! Keep running HARD!

Ramirez is really good on both sides of the game.

  6. Mark says:

Yo this upcoming Planet Of The Apes movie doesn’t look too promising. It looks like it’ll be alot of evil apes running amok but no dialogue from them. Part of the charm/allure/what have you of the POTA films was they talked and it was funny when one of them would speak in a British accent LOL.

Re: this game. I’m not liking what I’m seeing so far. Typical Yanks game: they strike early then die with the bats, the opponent comes back. Sabathia can’t always be 0-2 ER in 7-9 IP great, hopefully he is tonight.

    • T.O. Chris says:

It’s a remake of “Rise of the planet of the apes”. The apes didn’t talk in that movie. It’s the film that explains the origin of how apes ended up advancing, and eventuallt ruling the planet. They didn’t start out talking, so this move they don’t talk. It’s the only one in which they don’t talk though.

      • T.O. Chris says:

I’m sorry I meant it’s a remake of “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes”, and they have named it “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”. It’s not the exact story because apes were slave like servants in Conquest, but it’s a similar story line.

        • Mark says:

Ahhhh I see. Another remake/remake of sorts. Do screenwriters read or just IMAGINE anymore?

I always thought a funny idea for a movie was a 50-inning game I’d call “The Longest Game”. Kevin Costner as the manager of course haha. Of course with him it could also be an intense drama LOL.

          • T.O. Chris says:

Yeah, a re-made remake, which I suppose is even worse. Seems like an easy enough job, just watch an old movie, and remake it. haha.

You’d have to do it into a 3 part movie, and then release a different part of it every 6 months to make as much money as possible. haha.

            • Mark says:

Now the idea of a movie about a 50-inning game is growing on me. I’m thinking it starts out as a comedy where it’s all a barrel of weary laughs after 25 innings but once it hits 30, it turns serious.

It could be the last game of the regular season where it determines which team goes to the postseason thus it would delay the postseason, right? I mean say the Yanks and Red Sox were tied 99-62 going into Game 162 one year and it was Yanks 0, Red Sox 0 after 25 innings? Would the game continue on into the off-day between this game and Game 1 of the ALDS? What if rained all day on this day? Rules say you couldn’t bring in a pitcher who already pitched right?

  7. X says:

Yanks really need to win this game tonight.

If they did, 7 up on the Angels, 9 up on the Rays, possibly only one behind the Red Sox as the Red Sox are trailing 7-5 to the Indians late.

    More runs fellas!!!

  8. smurfy says:

Dunn sure looks like a $48 mil donkey, alright. Hunh, people actually wanted to sign him last winter. Hah.

    • Mark says:

I’m surprised an intelligent World Series-winning g.m. like Kenny Williams signed Dunn.

Why would give a DH 4 years and $56M when you have Gold Glove 1B Konerko?

      • T.O. Chris says:

It’s easy to hate on that contract in hindsight, but if you look at how consistent Dunn has been in his career he’s amazing. Outside of this year he is all but a lock for a .360-.380 OBP and 40 HRs.

        • X says:

I just don’t see the sense in giving a big long-term contract to a guy for a “position” which shouldn’t have just one guy there all the time. Look at Posada. He gets wayyyy too many starts at DH and while I don’t have exact stats, I’m pretty sure he’s cost the Yanks at least one game with his overall hitting in the DH.

          • T.O. Chris says:

Posada has a -0.4 WAR. So he has in fact cost the Yankees a 4th of a game compared to a replacement level player.

The thing is though that a normal everyday DH would be good. Posada wouldn’t be if the Yankees had any choice, but they seem intent on keeping him all year. a David Ortiz DH does deserve a long term contract, there just tends to be less of those kinds of players. But if Dunn was putting up numbers like his career numbers, he would be worth that money.

In fact last year with the Nationals Dunn was worth $13.8M, he then in turned signed a deal paying him 14 million per season.

            • X says:

I dunno. I’m thinking a DH should be a dude who could back up at a position or two well and start at DH two-thirds of a season tops so fielding guys could get rests from the field but still hit like what the Yanks do with A-Rod, Teixiera, Cano etc. Dunn can’t play anywhere but 1B and he sucks there. I’m only guessing the Chi-Sox felt they didn’t have enough power to sign a part-time DH and make the DH more of a resting position, so they signed Dunn.

              • T.O. Chris says:

I don’t want to limit the DH spot to any one thing. You can get value out of it in many different ways, and one of those ways is certainly how you described. But if a Frank Thomas, David Ortiz, or Adam Dunn is on a team he has plenty of value. You don’t have to have a power slugging every day DH, but there is nothing wrong with having that. I like to have a DH who can hit somewhere 4-6 in the order. It makes the order deeper, and it adds a middle of the order hitter out of nowhere. I have no problem with other DH strategies, I just like the added big bat.

Dunn has actually played 2 games in RF this year, and has played there 107 times since his rookie year. He can’t play any position well, but technically he can back up 2 positions. Your point is still valid, just a little tongue in cheek.

              • X says:

                Valid point.

If Chavez keeps hitting well and Montero isn’t called up to be the DH, I want Chavez at DH when A-Rod returns. I wouldn’t mind Chavez staying at 3B and A-Rod being the DH from thereonin, but I don’t see the Yanks doing that.

  9. T.O. Chris says:

It’s amazing that CC can have a game where he really doesn’t look very good, and he still ends up with 8 innings, and only 2 ER.

  10. Chris Sale has, to this point, made the Yankees look silly.

    • T.O. Chris says:

He has a great left handed arm! He threw harder last year, but he’s still averaging 94.7 MPH. It looks like they are going to keep him in the pen longterm, and work to make him their next closer. I would’ve at least had to tried him as a starter, I think the same with Aroldis Chapman. If they prove they can’t do it, at least you tried. But an arm like that will always be more valuable as a starter.

  11. Mike says:

Mo now has 587 career saves and needs only 15 saves to become the all-time saves leader.

Anyone think he could break the record this year? I think he could as it’s only August 1st.

The Yanks are 65-42 now, 55 games left. If the Yanks went just 30-25 the rest of the way to finish 95-67, Mo breaks the record if he collects a save in just half those wins.

How trippy would it be if he broke the record in the final game of the season? Unfortunately, it’d be in Tampa Bay. Ideally he breaks it at home against Boston >:)

  12. X says:

Ok, the Yanks are now just a game behind Boston for the division, 7 ahead of the idle Angels for the wildcard, and 9 ahead of the idle Rays for the wildcard.

TIME FOR PHIL HUGHES TO STEP UP AND HELP THE YANKEES GAIN AT LEAST A GAME ON ONE OF THESE TEAMS TOMORROW NIGHT.

Of course the Chi-Sox will have something to say about that, but I want to see six servicable innings from Hughes.

  13. smurfy says:

Bob Lorenz, as they showed the lady’s knee that Asdrubal’s game winning homer bounced off of, back onto the field, with the seams of the ball clearly showing on her skin: “It’s free tatoo night at Fenway.”

He’s pretty funny in a quiet way.

  14. X says:

Too bad Lorenz doesn’t call more games. I’d like him to cuz it’d bring a fresh, new perspective into the booth. I remember he called a game once or was in the booth for awhile and he was pretty good.

Anyone think the Yanks need to bring in a new guy or two, mabye get rid of a guy in the YES booth next year? I’d get rid of Cone or give him far less games.

    • smurfy says:

Oh,no, X. Cone is great: he atually talks about the game with insight into pitchers and hitters. He’s the best. Bob does real well in the studio where he can cook up little jokes. He’s flat on the play-by-play maybe Coney with him would be a fun try.
