Game Thread: Athletics vs. Yankees, 8/25/2011 (1:05PM EST on YES)
[Update 8/25/11 - 2:30PM]: Apparently the tarp is being removed. The game should start fairly shortly.
[Update 8/25/11 - 1:33PM]: Obviously the game isn’t starting on time. We’ll let you know more when we know more.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand afternoon matinees (unless I’m watching the game live that is). Following the game, while at work, is just so much harder. Fortunately for us though, the Yankees have fared well during day time affairs this season.
Another notch in the Win column couldn’t come at a better time as the Oakland Athletics have already taken the first two games of the series. Use this as your open thread!

If we do watch Rich Harden pitch, it looks like a difficult challenge. Nick Swisher, in a pre-game interview, said the key is his velocity, that he’s super if 96, and difficult if 91. He knows the guy as a friend, so that’s probably been in recent performance.
On Fangraphs, I noticed his ba and bapip against and his whip have improved this year from the Rangers last year and the Cubs, the year before. One strange fact in his splits: righties have hit him much better than lefties, this year.
Nunie’s playing short, Derek is DH, but Gardner is in the lineup. Watch for the bunt.
Looking at his pitches, it must be that his changeup (38.6%) moves a lot, away from lefties. Fangraphs shows a slighly negative value for it, but he rarely throws the slider. His fastball – maybe that tails like Sr Colon’s two seamer. Yeah, didn’t I hear of him as a sinkerball specialist?
Boy, that Jeter can’t hit anymore, except fr a linedrive leadoff triple, anyways.
yeah, I think that was a sinker that struck out Grnderson. Now I see another to Tex. That’s the pitch that murders lefties.
Tx plugs the hole, but the shift catches him, and Jeter ties it.
Got Arod withit, a fb that starts at the knees and drops as they swing over it. Gotta lay off, I guess and collect some walks, he walks a lot.
92 mostly, but Harden hit 94, then 96 against Jeter, with the base loaded. Difficult, but Robbie hit it dead solid, as did Russell. Nunie hit a softer line drive that Harden tried to field behind his back, an infield single.
That was payback for Weeks’ hit at the start of the game, a soft liner that Phil made glancing glove contact with. That got te long inning startd: he stole second, Coco bunted, Matsu took 12 ptches before he drove him in.
Phil’s at 56 pitches, 0 outs in the third. Weeks is on, and Coco is up, here we go, again.
Had to help a neighbor, and I missed the A’s 5 runs. Musta run Phil.
I got out of work just in time to hear Hughes get yanked. No god.
Those innings were long, and his strength was sapped. He was hitting corners, but then leaving it in the middle. Matsui drove that inability-to-put-them-away to a crazy degree. He needs a killer pich to go with his fb, even when he gets the good one back.
Well, my, my, isn’t that GRAND SLAM about the most cheerful turn of events? Way to go, Robbie!
Brett has popitis. He should squeeze one off.
Man, that’s frustrating. All dressed up, and no where to go. Brett shoulda bunted!
joe should have jones, gardner is in a major slump, and with the lefty,he should not have hit….why is he on the bench? perfect spot…
you’re right!
Oh, well, opportunities abound. Russell with the next granny!
your right!!..boy do we need this game..
to stop the bleeding? Sure don’t wanna be swept.
we need ogando tonight to pitch a great game..
I don’t have much trust in Ogando, since the Yanks beat up on him.
how has he pitched since…texas goes up to fenway next week
He’s done OK: whip for year is 1.12. He’s beat the Angels a couple times, lost to the Blue Jays a couple times. Good Babip against, low HRs/9.
Guess he’s a good candidate, but we’ve seen that a good, patient hitting team can take him apart.
Hear that? Derek has his average up to 300!
amazing come back by jeter..the rest of the team will feed off of that.. i never thought he could have this type of run.. he looked done…he must have had injury issues and never talked about them..the time off helped him get healthy.. i am happy i was wrong.. this is why next year we don’t need an official full time DH,,arod jeter ..tex are going to need that spot ..for the next couple of years..also with montero in that mix
Very happy to see this. Definitely didn’t enjoy watching him struggle. Do you think it really was the whole 3000 hit thing that slowed him down? He never seemed like one that let the pressure get to him, although he did admit he was nervous at the end and wanted to get it done at home, so who knows.
Anyways this comeback is sweet.
i feel he was hurting..even in the field he is moving much better..also his throws to first are crisper.
don’t look now…bases are loaded, again!
boo hoo! no grand slam!
Wow. What a beat-down!

Ho, ho, ho! A Grandy Granny!
Kay says that’s a first: 3 grannies in one game.
In Grand style!
Wow, what a finish! A grounder to Posada, playing his first time at second base, fields it clean, takes an extended crow hop, and fires a bouncer that Swish fielded as he fell to his right!
posada has an arm like a leg
