A.J. Burnett mans the mound tonight against the White Sox in Chicago. He’ll face a lineup of:

Juan Pierre, LF
Omar Vizquel, 2B (This guy hasn’t had a wRC+ above 84 since 2006 and he’s batting second. Let that sink in.)
Carlos Quentin, DH
Adam Dunn, 1B
Alexi Ramirez, SS
A.J. Pierzynski, C
Alex Rios, CF
Alejandro de Aza, RF
Brent Morel, 3B

Gavin Floyd will be tasked with opposing this Yankee lineup:

Brett Gardner, LF
Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Eric Chavez, 3B
Jorge Posada, DH (I have you in Pick Six tonight; don’t make me regret it.)
Russell Martin, C

Let’s see: up 4 before he starts, and AJ, I love ya,but.. Juan fugging Pierre hammaers the first strike? for a double?

  2. smurfy says:

    Wow, Grandy does it again!

Jeter just passed Lou Brock, one GREAT ballplayer.

  3. smurfy says:

Boy, Russell didn’t frame the strike that got Perzinsky, he yanked it.

This ump has a blind spot.

  4. smurfy says:

who’d a thunkit? Floyd out of the game before Burnett.

  5. smurfy says:

So Rios misplays a solid single into a ball that dies at the wall. Mark Texeira trundles into third with a “triple.”

I’m having ..uh..deja vue. Is this Baltimore?

  6. This might be the most gratifying game of the season. Hanging a career-high 10 runs on Floyd in 2.1 innings, especially considering that Floyd hadn’t given up more than two runs against the Yankees since 2008, is just absolutely wonderful.

  7. smurfy says:

Last night, they made Danks look like a poor pitcher, which I don’t believe. I think they’re playing with confidence and fire.

  8. smurfy says:

Aj’s throwing some very nice pitches: I’ve seen splendid 2 seamers and lots of wicked hammers. May he pitch thataways forever.

  9. smurfy says:

That curve that Omar Visquel had to dodge, so it wouldn’t hit him as he was checking unsuccessfully, Michael called a ball in the dirt. That ball was everywhere.

  10. AJ Burnett is on the mound, and we’re scoring runs, what a bizarre game! :D

  11. smurfy says:

94 mph 2 seamer? That gun maybe loaded.

  12. Oh, AJ. Offense spots you 13 runs and you still don’t get the win decision. -________________________-

    get it together…

  13. smurfy says:

Did you see that video game summary, from Nissan, done to a mechanical organ sounding like a machine?

  14. smurfy says:

This ump sees himself as a wildcard player in the game.

  15. smurfy says:

Luis Ayala pitched nicely for us there. I had wondered if he should be sacrificed, temporarily, to the need for Nova or Phil in the bullpen. Scratch that idea. He has been solid all year, except for the last time out.

  16. smurfy says:

No, Jeter can’t hit no more, no more, no more, no more.

Hit the road , uh, if you say the Cap’n can’t hit no more.

  17. Duh, Innings says:

The Yanks should seriously consider taking Burnett out of the rotation.

He cannot keep pitching like this and expect to get a postseason start.

Below are his next nine starts assuming he starts every fifth game. Five starts vs. three postseason-contending teams including the division leader (Boston, Los Angeles, Tampa Bay) and six vs. above .500 teams. His only real breather is Kansas City. 3-6 would not be unthinkable and that could mean the difference between the Yanks winning the division and starting at least one postseason at home or the Yanks winning the wildcard and starting every postseason on the road.

    8/9 Los Angeles
    8/14 Tampa Bay
    8/19 @ Kansas City
    8/26 @ Baltimore
    8/31 @ Boston
    9/5 Baltimore
    9/11 @ Los Angeles
    9/17 @ Toronto
    8/24 Boston

Once again, I say the Yanks should look into trading Burnett and $1.5M to Atlanta for Derek Lowe in the offseason. The Yanks get rid of Burnett and clear his $33M including $16.5M for 2013. They pay $16.5M, the same amount if they kept Burnett (Lowe’s $15M salary + $1.5M thrown in), for just one year of Lowe who they could let go of, no buyout.

The Braves get a younger veteran starter they have control over beyond 2012 who could thrive in the league without the DH and with a much weaker 7-8-9 batting order. Burnett would cost them $15M, the same amount if they kept Lowe, for 2012 since the Yanks would throw in $1.5M to pay part of Burnett’s 2012 salary. It’d be a high-risk high-reward move. Name me a team besides the Yankees who would take Lowe off Atlanta’s hands.

How ’bout this folks? The Chi-Sox put Jake Peavy on waivers, the Yanks claim and get him. Sabathia/Peavy/Garcia/Colon/Hughes or Nova the rest of 2011, Burnett to the pen, too bad if he doesn’t like it. The Yanks swap Burnett for Lowe in the offseason. The Yanks could let go of Peavey and Lowe after 2012. If Peavy has a great 2012, the Yanks could pick up his $22M club option for 2013 and so what that it’s a ton of money? They clear $16.5M letting go of Lowe. Basically the money they’d owe Burnett for 2013 if he was still a Yankee would be used to bring back Peavy who’d cost only $5.5M more than 2013 Burnett ($22M for 2013 Peavey – $16.5M for 2013 Burnett/Lowe.)

The 2012 rotation you ask? Simple: Sabathia/Peavy/Lowe/Hughes/Nova or the Yanks could re-sign Garcia for another year cheap and Hughes and Nova could duke it out for the fifth starter slot. They have plenty of internal options and prospects to land a #3 which is really all they need if they needed that.

  18. Duh, Innings says:

I think the Yanks unofficially clinched the wildcard with this win because check this:

If they played just 27-26 ball the rest of the way, the Angels would have to play 34-17 / two wins every three games / .667 ball the rest of the way just to finish tied with the Yanks. I don’t see the Angels doing that.

So what would be your Yankees ALDS rotation right now?

Mine would be Sabathia/Colon/Garcia/Nova with Burnett on standby for mopup in case Nova got hammered/Sabathia. Hughes would be my emergency starter.

I’d want my #2 (Garcia) pitching Game 3, especially if the Yanks were down 0-2 or tied 1-1.
