So I check in to the MLB trade rumors week in review, and you know what they have on the Yanks? Squat. Oh sure, they signed Marcus Thames to a minor league deal, and made a phone call to the Tampa Bay Rays that lasted about a minute. Other than that? Nothing.

And that’s just the way I like it. Did anyone hear anything about the Nick Swisher deal in 2008? Did anyone predict Cash was going to boldly swoop in and land Curtis Granderson the following year? Nope. Early in the morning last July, Joel Sherman woke us up with news of an almost completed deal for Cliff Lee. Kerry Wood? Lance Berkman? Nada, mi amigos. Brian is in ninja-mode, stealthily surveying the field before he strikes quickly, decisively and with deadly accuracy. I bet he doesn’t even call any other GMs this week. He just sits back, and when that phone rings the other GM doesn’t get to hang up the phone until a deal is struck.

Use this as your open thread for tonight, and don’t sit up waiting tonight for a rumor on a starter. There won’t be any rumors. By the time you catch wind of a rumor, it will already be a done deal.

How about that lefty that beat the Yanks for the Cubs about a month ago? I heard he got cut. Another guy that looked like he was pitching from a rocking chair. Beat us easy as you please. Bullpen?

I think Brian is treating this deadline a lot like last year. He’ll make a few calls, but for the most part he’s just waiting for GMs to call him with salary dumps.

I believe he will probably make a last second call to the Rockies, but I don’t expect anything to come from it.

I’m not sure if anyone has noticed but Dontrelle Willis is back in the major leagues. Dontrelle is one of my favorite pitchers in baseball, and as a fan of the guy it’s been really hard to watching struggle like he has over the last few years. When he was with the Marlins he was a talented, fun loving, energetic kid, and that almost got taken away from him.

He started today for the Reds, and while he is nowhere close to the 20 game winner he once was, it’s nice to see him actually be able to pitch a relatively solid game.

He ended up pitching 6.1 innings, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR. He’s no longer throwing in the low 90′s, and there is no telling how long he will stay in the majors. But I do feel good that he is getting at least one more shot at some kind of career again. There was a time when I thought he would never pitch in Major League Baseball again.

For their part, the Yankees are worried “about Ubaldo’s inconsistency, all-out delivery, and coming to AL East,” tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The Yankees have the talent to pull off a deal, but it remains to be seen if the two teams can find common ground.
