We got ourselves a day/night doubleheader on tap for this afternoon, with Bartolo Colon facing Chris Tillman in the 1:00 game. The 7:00 game will feature two highly touted pitchers getting the call from AAA, with the return of Ivan Nova for the Yanks and Zach Britton for the O’s. In Nova’s case, it could be an audition for a spot in the rotation , assuming the Yanks don’t land a veteran pitcher by tomorrow’s trade deadline and he’s not in the deal. Don’t expect much length from Bartolo going forward, reports are the Yanks will watch Bartolo’s workload in an attempt to keep him effective for October.

Use this as your game thread for both contests, and LET’S GO YANKS!!!!!!

  1. Nice bounceback game for the O this afternoon.

  2. Duh, Innings! says:

Girardi was ridiculous for getting Mo up in the bullpen.

8-3 lead, two outs, two men on. LET LOGAN GET THE FINAL OUT!!!

Bumped up this one for the evening game thread. No need to start another.

White has been scratched from his one-inning rehab outing, MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian reports (on Twitter).
There are indications that Pomeranz and White could be available in a possible deal, according to Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link).
The Rockies asked for Pomeranz, Kipnis and Lonnie Chisenhall, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter).
The Rockies and Indians are in serious talks, Renck reports (on Twitter). He hears that a deal would center around Pomeranz, Alex White and Jason Kipnis.
Renck gets the “strong sense” that Cleveland hasn’t given up (Twitter link) and Morosi says Indians prospect Drew Pomeranz was scratched from his Double-A start today (Twitter link).

It’s looking like the Indians are getting very close on Jimenez.

Just reported on YES, done deal with Cleveland.

…and the Yanks officially have the worst 1-2 of the postseason contenders.

        Boston has Beckett-Lester.

        Detroit has Verlander-Scherer.

        Cleveland has Masterson-Jimenez.

        Tampa Bay has Price-Shields.

        Texas has Ugando-Wilson.

        Los Angeles has Weaver-Santana.

The Yanks have Sabathia and who???? Certainly not Burnett or Colon. I like Garcia, he has done way more than (I) expected, but he is not as good as the above #2s.

Even SEATTLE has a better 1-2 in Hernandez-Pineda.

Sabathia better not suck or get hurt.

I would be surprised if the Yanks got out of the first round and shocked if they made it to the World Series with a rotation of Sabathia/Garcia/Colon/Burnett.

Great job by Cashman. He once again showed he doesn’t have the guts to pull the trigger or the talent to land even a #3 and anyone who runs the “The Yanks don’t need a #3″ line, um, they do when they don’t have a true #2. If you don’t have a true #2, you need two #3s. Burnett is an overpaid #4, Garcia, Colon, and Nova are overachieving #4s, and Hughes is unfit to be in the rotation.

All you people with your “He’s keeping prospects for the future.” this isn’t the Pittsburgh Pirates, this is the New York Yankees, the best, winningest, most famous (and even infamous haha) team in professional sports history thus expected to put a top-notch team on the field for the money they are charging at the gate to win now. And when the HELL has the “win now” mentality hurt the Yanks when they’ve traded with it? It didn’t hurt them in 1976 (Doyle Alexander), 1995 (David Cone), 1996 (Cecil Fielder), 1997 (David Wells), 1999 (Roger Clemens), or 2000 (David Justice.) Spare me Steve Trout in ’87, the Yanks didn’t have Guidry for a a stretch, they still won 89 games. They had the misfortune of being in the best division in MLB that year. One year, 24 years ago. Doug Drabek would’ve made the 1990-93 Yankees better but I doubt the Yanks win a division title with him. Al Leiter didn’t amount to anyything until the mid-1990s.

This rotation is just like the 1998-2003 Red Sox rotations: an ace and four #4s. How’d that work out for Boston? Three postseasons out of six (1998, 1999, and 2003.) Don’t be surprised if the Yanks go the way of those teams cuz a Sabathia, Burnett, and three question marks rotation for next year isn’t making it to the postseason. This year mirrors 2005 in that once again two castoffs have saved Cashman’s bacon. Garcia and Colon are the new Small and Chacon.

Cashman is lucky Garcia and Colon are doing what they are doing which NONE of us expected, but if his luck runs out, the Yanks’ luck will run out too, and he is out of here after this year. The guy can’t land a real ace (Lee), a #2 (Jimenez), or even a #3. He’s an idiot for offering Sabathia an opt-out clause when Sabathia never asked for one.

Sabathia should opt out and ask for 8 years at $25M per cuz what are the Yanks gonna do? Not pay him? I could see Artie Moreno offering Sabathia that to sign with the Angels. Hypothetically Boston could offer that if they let go of David Ortiz and I could see Ortiz signing for chickenfeed to stay and bring in Sabathia. Cleveland could go for Sabathia, too. And then what if the Yanks lose Sabathia?

What if Sabathia is offended by not being offered an extension? This guy has an opt-out clause and you don’t offer an extension to avoid him exercising it? Are you nuts, Yankees?

Btw who says the Yanks are acquiring Felix Hernandez or Jason Johnson via trade or signing either guy? I think you might need more than Sabathia age 33-34 in the rotation for either to consider signing with the Yanks. And since when is Johnson an automatic #2 for the Yanks when he’s pitched in the NL his whole career? Yeah the dude faces the Phillies alot, but the rest of that division is fluff offensively.

I never knew it was all about next year, two years from now, or three years from now with the Yanks. It isn’t and shouldn’t be.

  6. Duh, Innings! says:

The Rockies are low-class jerks for having Jimenez start today then yanking him after one inning instead of sending him to wherever Cleveland is so he can start for them tomorrow. Now Jimenez can’t pitch until Thursday at the earliest, right?

Make the trade before the game so Cleveland can use him right away tomorrow.

    Jerks.

  7. smurfy says:

Well, thank you, TYA. I have enjoyed my first game in YS III. The Batter’s Eye presents a nice bleacher view, just underneath the centerfield cameras. With my binoculars, I could track Bartolo’s pitches nicely.

Brett was in center, and it was great to see him manuever for several balls, and to witness him captaining the outfield, yelling to Dickerson to tighten left when Swish and he decided to play the righty batter to hit late with two of Bart’s strikes on him.

7 innings was enough scorching, and I got myself in tight to watch Logan struggle to finish them off.

One niggle: twice I went for refreshments and twice the Yanks scored two, which is fine – but I missed ‘em! Just kidding: thanks for the tix!

Oh! Tex just shot the O’s pitcher dead in the butt!
