The Bombers will conclude this month with a series against the beleaguered Baltimore Orioles. As Larry noted in his series preview, the O’s haven’t played particularly well for the majority of this season, and have been especially ineffective of late. The Yankees, on the other hand, are currently 20 games over .500, have averaged 5.19 runs per game (AL average is 4.34 R/G), and have also enjoyed successful series against both the Althetics and the Mariners.

Also, in case you’re interested, Baseball Prospectus’ Playoff Odds Report has the Bombers chances listed at a gaudy 96.7%.  Contemplating the postseason at this juncture may be a bit premature; still, you have to like those odds!   Use this as your game thread for the evening.

  1. Let’s go, A.J. Do your thing.

  2. Man what a pathetic showing. They really needed to go to town on Guthrie tonight considering they get Britton tomorrow, who’s going to kill them.

    Trade idea:

A.J. Burnett and $1.5M to Atlanta for Derek Lowe in the offseason.

The Yanks take on Lowe’s $15M salary for 2012 (they still pay $16.5M total from throwing in $1.5M towards Burnett’s 2012 salary), shed Burnett’s remaining $33M salary, and could clear $16.5M letting go of Lowe after 2013. Lowe isn’t Burnett. Yes, Lowe would most likely be an overpaid #4 starter for the Yanks like Burnett is, but it’s better to spend $16.5M on one year of Lowe than $16.5M per year for two years with Burnett. .

The Braves pay the same for Burnett as they would if they kept Lowe ($15M.) While they take on more salary, they get a younger and possibly better veteran starter and have him under control through 2013.

I think it’s an ideal match. If Lowe does well, the Yanks get a good year out of him. If he sucks, Burnett probably does the same. If Burnett does well for the Braves, they have him for 2013. If they decide to be sellers in the middle of 2013 and Burnett has a nice walk year up to that point, he could net some prospects for a team in need of a veteran starter for the stretch run. Or they could re-sign him for far less than $16.5M per. Again, he probably doesn’t do the same for the Yanks.

This Yankees team has absolutely NO comeback in them. None. And no, scoring a run or two and losing isn’t a comeback, tying the game or walking off with the win is.

Between this team’s rotation after Sabathia and offense I just don’t see them winning the World Series this year. I hope I’m wrong.

THIS OFFENSE STINKS. Their homeruns and high-scoring games mask the real picture which is a team without a .300 hitter.

Jeter and Posada are hasbeens, A-Rod is on his way to being one. Martin is a #8 hitting catcher. Cano is an underachiever and doesn’t post high enough OBP for me to think he’s a long-termer. I like Swisher for his hustle, energy, and spirit but he is a so-so. Teixiera looks like he could be 2004 on Giambi in two more years although he did show up tonight. Granderson will probably want big bucks after next year if it’s as good as or better than the one he’s having this year. Gardner is a nice sparkplug but it’s hard to maximize him when you have Captain Can’t Hit Anymore batting after him. I’d rebuild this entire offense around Granderson and Gardner and that’s it.
