Hurray for Fridays, the Yankees not being in Canada or Tampa any longer, non-artifical surfaces in general, upcoming weaker portions of the schedule, and non-divisional-rivalry matchups!  Now if only we could do something about this blistering heat other than find the closest/most powerful air conditioning unit, we’d really be in business.  Tonight’s game will mark Hughes’ third start since coming off of the Disabled List, and his second start since the “mechanical alteration” was evidently applied to his curveball.  Here’s to hoping for the best! Also, incase you hadn’t heard, George A. King of NYPost.com, reported that the Yankees have signed Marcus Thames (who had been recently DFA’d by the Dodgers) to a minor league contract.

Tonight’s Yankees lineup:
1. Derek Jeter (R) SS
2. Curtis Granderson (L) CF
3. Mark Teixeira (S) 1B
4. Robinson Cano (L) 2B
5. Nick Swisher (S) RF
6. Jorge Posada (S) DH
7. Russell Martin (R) C
8. Brett Gardner (L) LF
9. Eduardo Nunez (R) 3B

Tonight’s Athletics lineup:
1. Jemile Weeks (S) 2B
2. Coco Crisp (S) CF
3. Josh Willingham (R) DH
4. Hideki Matsui (L) LF
5. Scott Sizemore (R) 3B
6. David DeJesus (L) RF
7. Conor Jackson (R) 1B
8. Kurt Suzuki (R) C
9. Cliff Pennington (S) SS

And on the mound:
Phil Hughes (1-2, 8.44 ERA/5.87 FIP/5.79 xFIP)
vs.
Trevor Cahill (8-8, 3.16 ERA/3.95 FIP/3.66 xFIP)

  1. Still kind of awkward to see Matsui in a non-Yankee uniform.

  2. If Cahill has that pitch he just threw to Gardner for strike three working all night, he’s going to be impossible to hit.

  3. T.O. Chris says:

Looks like the lineup has some real change tonight.

    Gardner
    Jeter
    Granderson
    Teixeira
    Cano

Iwonder if this is what they go with from here on out against righties?

I had to run wet hay bales that were pouring off the elevator (damned old man) across the stacks in the 110 degree hay loft, but I wouldn’t want to play baseball this evening.

Before you all decide to trade Phil due to his inability to miss even the weak, terribly weak bats of the A’s, he has a pass tonight, due to inclement weather.

However, Cahill looks sharp. Except for plunking our base stealing favorite centerfielder.

    • T.O. Chris says:

Not sure how you can give him a pass. He’s a major league starter, and the game started on time.

      • smurfy says:

I guess you are a no-nonsense kind of guy.

        • T.O. Chris says:

If it was raining, and the game was delayed he would have a pass of some kind. But this is just something he has to deal with a lot. Most games don’t have perfect temp, or weather. Especially not in the playoffs.

  5. That’s three well struck balls vs. Hughes.

  6. Looks like Hughes is getting the curve over for strikes, which is nice.

  7. That was just a nice piece of hitting from Weeks; really went down and got a good curve from Hughes.

  8. T.O. Chris says:

I Jile Jamile Weeks, I’ve watched him play some this year. He’s not his brother, but he’s talented.

  9. Cano’s out if Pennington holds onto that ball.

  10. Despite the errors, the A’s are actually 6th in MLB in Defensive Efficiency.

  11. Nunez AND Cervelli getting hits to keep a rally going?!

  12. Gardner was out. Woops.

    STOP SLIDING INTO FIRST, BRETT.

  13. T.O. Chris says:

Gardner’s speed stealing a call. I still don’t like that he slides into first though.

  14. Jeter didn’t try to pull it! YES.

  15. T.O. Chris says:

You know things are going right when Jeter is hitting solid singles, and stealing bases.

  16. T.O. Chris says:

Rare base running error for Jeter.

  17. Need a shutdown inning from Phil here.

  18. T.O. Chris says:

No second baseman in baseball makes that play but Cano.

  19. Operation Awareness is in full swing.

  20. T.O. Chris says:

Cano is honestly one of the most talented players I’ve seen outside of Arod. He’s not quite one of the best 5 players in baseball, but he has that kind of talent or better. Especially when you consider what he can do defensively.

  21. Um, did Michael Kay just put Cano in the Hall of Fame?!

    • T.O. Chris says:

I think he left out the word “potential”.

Swisher with the home run, and Cahill has to hate the Yankees!

      • He said Jose Cano has “produced an All-Star and probable Hall of Famer.”

        • T.O. Chris says:

Didn’t hear that one. I just heard “pitched around him to get to other hall of famers”.

I do think Cano has a good chance at the hall. He needs luck, and health, but he has the talent. Obviously too early to be talking about that though.

  22. I hope no one picked Cahill in PickSix tonight.

  23. smurfy says:

I have to pause from my dinner to say, wow, thatsa some kinda run support!

  24. Oh, poor you, Kurt. Yiiiikes.

  25. To quote Pepper Lech: Ouchtown: Population: You, bro!

  26. Derek Jeter w/a bases loaded walk?

    0_o

  27. BUT THE BATTING AVERAGE.

  28. T.O. Chris says:

Swisher is probably earning his option I think. He’s proven he just had a real bad start against righti handers, and that he can turn it down. There really is no on the market that’s much better than him. It’s worth slightly overpaying for one year for his personality, and the chemistry he helps make.

    • I think he was going to get that option picked up no matter what.

      • T.O. Chris says:

Possible. But it would’ve been hard if he hadn’t picked up his production against right handers. He was on an waful, awful pace. I’m sure they all ways had confidence it was just a slump, but if it never broke you’d have to worry.

  29. T.O. Chris says:

Why does Hughes get so much run support? I know it’s random, but he seems to get really lucky with scoring early and often.

  30. T.O. Chris says:

This reminds me of the Hughes from 07-08, leading up to him being put in the pen in 09.

  31. T.O. Chris says:

Well that is the payback for the short porch grand slam.

  32. T.O. Chris says:

One step forward last week, two back today.

  33. One time. Just ONE time, Mike. That’s all I’m asking for. Can you please, one time, pronounce the “H” in “Hughes”? PLEASE?!

  34. Nine more games of O’Neill/Kay? U G H . My mute button is going to get a workout.

  35. Let’s see if Michael and Paul actually discuss Moneyball. Somehow, I doubt it.

  36. Paul O’Neill says that Finley “got him out a lot,” but Paul actually had a .404 OBP vs. Finely in his career.

    • T.O. Chris says:

Don’t quote me these mystery future numbers. WHAT WAS THE BATTING AVERAGE? HOW MANY RBI DID HE HAVE?

  37. T.O. Chris says:

    This guy has great stuff!

  38. So I guess Kay is going to say “hit number 30xx” every time Jeter gets a hit, huh?

  39. Okay, Phil, get these three outs and call it a night.

    • T.O. Chris says:

This is a situation where I miss Aceves. I would love to see Noesi’s role develop into that kind of guy.

  40. That…is not good.

  41. T.O. Chris says:

He had worse velocity this week, and his curve was no where near as good in any way.

Cashman has no idea what he has right now outside of Burnett and Sabathia.

    • smurfy says:

I guess he’ll be hit or miss the rest of the year, till next spring. But I think the Yanks should go with Colon and Garcia and Nova, with those young arms warming in the minors, and a hitter in Scranton they say is very good.

      • T.O. Chris says:

We aren’t winning many tough short series with that rotation. I’ll take Ubaldo so long as we either keep Nova, or one of Banuelos/Betances.

There’s talent there but I don’t see either becoming Ubaldo, and I can sacrafice a DH for a an ace.

  42. T.O. Chris says:

I want to see Cano get on a roll with a couple of multi hit games, so he can get over that .300 mark.

    • smurfy says:

first we gotta get Jete past the Duh complaint threshhold. Then, Cano can go!

      • Duh, Innings! says:

Captain Can’t Hit Anymore had a good night. Hopefully he can have another multi-hit game tomorrow. If Jeter has three multi-hit games in a row, I’ll stop calling him CCHA.

  43. T.O. Chris says:

If anyone wants to know the end line for Banuelos today was 5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K.

He had seemed like, for a couple games at least, he had started to turn around the control. But he has been awful with the walks this year.

    • smurfy says:

the few innings he pitched this spring, when I was watching, his command was his defining trait. He was shaving the corners with fastballs and curveballs. Wonder what he is doing differently.

      • T.O. Chris says:

he’s not pitching 1-2 innings out of the pen in spring training. I’ve seen a couple of his games, and he doesn’t have pinpoint control. He shows flashes of good command, but he isn’t consistent.

  44. smurfy says:

Joey Devine agrees with me: it’s a cruel night to play baseball.

    Nice debut by Brandon Laird:

Walk, run scored, line drive first MLB hit up the middle, RBI.
