The Yanks take on the Mariners in a matinee today to wrap up their three game set. Phil Hughes is on the bump for the Yanks (what are your expectations for this game? Post them in the comments). I was at the last game Felix Hernandez pitched against the Yankees in New York and it was pretty damn incredible to watch. Anyway, the Yankees will trot out this lineup against the defending A.L. Cy Young winner (with career numbers vs. Felix)

1. Brett Gardner, LF (.250/.250/.250 in 12 PA)
2. Derek Jeter, SS (.346/.433/.462 in 31 PA)
3. Curtis Granderson, CF (.316/.333/.500 in 39 PA)
4. Mark Teixeira, DH (.313/.382/.646 in 55 PA)
5. Robinson Cano, 2B (.320/.414/.560 in 29 PA)
6. Nick Swisher, RF (.216/.310/.568 in 42 PA)
7. Russell Martin, C (.250/.333/.250 in 9 PA)
8. Jorge Posada, 1B (.250/.308/.250 in 13 PA)
9. Eduardo Nunez, 3B (0 PAs)

Go Yanks! (I can has reverse lock?)

Hopefully Cashman doesn’t hear this about his decision of Hughes over Nova….

  2. T.O. Chris says:

Hughes has missed high with the fastball a lot early on. Thankfully though he’s missed high enough that he’s getting swing and misses, or they’re just laying off. His velocity has also been good enough to get away with a lot of misses. He can’t locate thus far though, and that won’t allow his success to hold up for long.

  3. T.O. Chris says:

Kay just made the dumbest argument yet against Felix winning the Cy. “When you’re in your rocking chair at 90, you’re not going to remember having the lowest WHIP in the league. You’re going to remember winning 23 games.”.

Seriously can we stop this debate already? Felix was by far the best pitcher in all of baseball last year, cut and dry.

  4. Joe G says:

I have to watch the game on gamecast, so can someone explain the run scoring triple to me? gamecast shows it as a shallow single that went for a triple. Was it a rip down the line, did Swisher dive and misplay it, or something else? Thanks in advance…

Chris will come thru hopefully. I was in the kitchen, missed it. Mutes on today, Kay and Paul want to talk about everything but the play by play.

    • T.O. Chris says:

It was hit into the gap, split the outfielders, and rolled to the wall. Just ran it back on Tivo to make sure. No misplay.

      • Joe G says:

Thanks Chris. Looks like Hughes is getting killed by cheap singles now.

And btw Ervin Santana, despite allowing a run because of an error, just threw a no hitter.

        • T.O. Chris says:

What are the odds you allow one base runner all game, and the defense has an error and let’s him score.

          • Joe G says:

Well the base runner was because of the error (first batter he faced) and he let the run score on a wild pitch, so partly his fault lol.

  5. Frank says:

With diminished velocity by the 4th inning, and loss of velocity obviously an ongoing problem with no apparant injury, perhaps the Yanks should seriously consider the possibility Hughes is better off, long term, in the BP.

    • smurfy says:

short term. you watch his progress.

    • T.O. Chris says:

I’m not sure of the link but one of the writers has pointed to the fact that Phil has always lost velocity as he goes along in games.

Everyone focuses on velocity, but honestly Phil can be a starter throwing 89-92. He needs to work on his control, he is, and has always been way too wild. Especially with the fastball.

  6. smurfy says:

Sweet throw by Brett to get the second runner!

  7. T.O. Chris says:

Edwin Jackson has been the guy to trade here lately. From the Rays, to Detroit, to the Diamondbacks, to the White Sox, to the Blue Jays, and finally to the Cardinals. He’s a free agent at the end of the season, so he will finally be able to pick his own team for once.

  8. T.O. Chris says:

That Pirates-Braves call is the worst call I have ever seen btw. Umps should get suspended, or fined, or something for things like that. Just to drive the point home.

  9. T.O. Chris says:

Let’s hope Buster is just being mean!

how many years on his contract, Chris? He’s a pretty good pitcher, pitcing strong. But only one more year, with some salary relief.

      • T.O. Chris says:

He’s not a pretty good pitcher at all! He is owed 17.875M this season, and another $18M next year.

So far this year he has posted a 4.70 ERA, 4.03 FIP, 4.21 xFIP, with a 6.16 K/9, and 3.45 BB/9 mark in the NL. His velocity is all at an all time low at 90.1 MPH. He would be destroyed in the AL East.

        • smurfy says:

I thought he was doing better. Ok, ok, those numbers are convincing, indeed.

          • T.O. Chris says:

That’s just pure numbers too. We aren’t talking about what a club house cancer he is on top of that.

I honestly wouldn’t take Zambrano if he cost nothing, and they paid the entire salary. He isn’t better than Garcia or Colon, and I wouldn’t want him in any capacity.

  10. smurfy says:

whew! Got Phil his “respectable” six innings. Don’t accuse Joe of being heartless: I woulda pulled Phil early in the rally in the 5th.

    • T.O. Chris says:

Sorry, I can’t even call this respectable in quotes. Giving up 9 hits to the Mariners, especially when they have lost 17 straight is awful.

  11. smurfy says:

Well, the top of the 7th was surely a bummer, with kinda poor defense. Guess everyone left.

We would assasinate the Mariners if we came back, made amends.

  12. smurfy says:

Alright, Curtis, you’re the man for the job!

  13. Duh, Innings! says:

Phil Hughes sucks plain and simple, and I said this before he was put back into the rotation, so I’m not second-guessing. The Yanks should’ve never replaced Nova with him and fixed what wasn’t broke which is now broke (Nova d.l.) Good job, Cashman.

The Yanks should skip Hughes, start Garcia 8/2, 7, and 12 against the Chi-Sox, Bo-Sox, and Rays, respectively, with the off-day tomorrow and start Noesi 8/4 (extra day of rest for whoever starts 8/4, Sabathia still starts 7/31 and the first game at Fenway 8/5.)

No using “King Felix” as an excuse for why the Yanks lost today. Hughes gave up an inexcusable nine hits today and if Boston can hammer the Ms with him on the mound like they did last Friday, so can the Yanks.
